Blind Item #6

This always A list singer is fighting for his life and is losing the battle. No matter what treatments he tries and no matter what he does to try and improve, things don't. Everyone is shocked that he has a chance to make it through 2012.

Def David Bowie, here is article from October about him: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/9616778/David-Bowie-singers-pale-appearance-reignites-health-fears.html

George Michael is a pot head. True he was hospitalized for pneumonia/coma. Perhaps he's moved up from pot? He had said he was going to rehab too recently right? Bowie's been around hard drugs his entire career and has maintained the same physique, manner, etc. If he was going to go off the deep end don't you think he would have done that in the 60's? George Michael, and he must have moved on to pills or H. Poor baby, he's so effing talented. Just stick with the bud George, it's not going to kill you.

Rumour was that GM's illness was HIV related, although he denied it.

Always A list singer would be George Michael (no instruments for him) or Barry Manilow or David Bowie. Not Prince because I can't imagine Enty calling him a singer instead of a musician or rock star or something more Prince-like. George Michael has uncontrollable substance abuse pathology and sex addiction behaviour going back decades, and I can't imagine him being in really good shape. Even with anti-HIV meds, I would think that he would have trouble taking the pills daily with his severe G and K and amphetamine and cocaine habits, plus the booze and self-contempt. George Michael for the ... well, not win. For the sorrow.

Sadly I believe this is George Michael too.

George Michael did great at the Olympics yet with that huge, wonderful tribute to David Bowie, he couldn't even make a brief appearance... Either he was protesting the Olympics or he's too ill to risk embarrassment.

Shocky said...

Not Prince. Saw him perform at a festival within the last year and a half and he was as energetic as I've ever seen him, which is to say very.

I'll lend my support to the George Michael guess as well. OT but somewhat related, I saw a picture of Sting last week and he is looking so old now. It's so weird! Sometimes it seems like it happens over night.

For my money, David Bowie doesn't look particularly pale or ill in that link. He's probably just a bit older and wiser, and living the quiet life these days. As for George Michael, well I hope not, but he certainly seems the most likely candidate. As my local Snappy Snaps will attest.

I'm forever a George Michael fan and the thought of this being him makes me so incredibly sad. We all know he has huge demons- such a waste of talent.

I just saw Prince last month, not him. I'm on the George Michael train, but I sure hope I'm wrong!

PLEASE not Bowie! Hope you guys are wrong in that one. Of course, I love George Michael, too, so I hope it's not him.

Just to be different, Billy Joel? I've seen him about 5 times and at least 4 of them he was drunk. One time in particular it was really bad and he couldn't even get through Piano Man.

HalleGoLightly said...

@ B

Billy Joel gained a lot of weight recently. He was at the Sandy benefit. He didn't look sick. He looked fat (ashamed at msyelf that this was my first thought when I saw him...Judgy Judgerson).

I agree with Common Land. The link posted for Bowie doesn't show me much. He looks fine to me.

George Michael looked pretty good when he sang at the closing ceremony for the Olympics.

This is the statement that was posted to George Michael's website on Sept 29th

I have today announced the cancellation of the shows in Australia which breaks my heart. By way of explanation all I can say at this time is that since last year's illness I have tried in vain to work my way through the trauma that the doctors who saved my life warned me I would experience. They recommended complete rest and the type of post traumatic counselling which is available in cases like mine but I'm afraid I believed (wrongly) that making music and getting out there to perform for the audiences that bring me such joy would be therapy enough in itself. Unfortunately I seriously underestimated how difficult this year would be and although I was right to believe that the shows would bring me great happiness and that my voice would recover completely (I truly think that some of my recent performances have been my best ever) I was wrong to think I could work my way through the major anxiety that has plagued me since I left Austria last December.

All that's left for me to do is apologise to my wonderful Australian fan base and to promise faithfully that as soon as I completed these shows here in the UK I will receive the treatment which is so long overdue.

— George Michael

He last tweeted on Oct 16th, after the last of his his UK concerts finished. Hasn't been heard from since.

I am a huge fan, and I hope that this is not him.

karenab said...

Sadly, I think this is George. I saw him a few years ago and he was awesome, in fact I got more tickets and went again that same tour. Then I saw him a month ago, and something about him was 'off'. We didnt even stay til the end. I thought he looked bloated at the Olympics, and I also thought singing his new song was, well, tacky, when everyone else was singing their standards. George has so many songs that would have got the whole stadium rocking, and he sang something most people wouldnt know. I dont know, it just seemed out of character for lovely George.

Kelly said...

George was my first love. His voice is beyond amazing. I hope he this isn't him, but I also think it might be. Hope he gets better so much.

Anna - Tony Bennett has looked exactly the same for about 40 years now. He'll be recording duets with Lady Gaga's grandchildren.

PS said...

I hope this is nobody, and that Enty is wrong.

That said, I am so sad that anyone says about anyone, "what a waste of talent." I think it is exactly that sentiment that plagues talented people who have issues of self-worth, self-acceptance, self-love. If this is George, or anyone else, have they not given us enough? Has he wasted his talent? Or did he persevere through his demons to leave a very significant mark of undeniable beauty that we all got to enjoy, even if shorter than we would greedily hope? Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Morrison, Holly, Patsy, even Amy Winehouse, the list goes on too long ... any of those legends who passed sooner than we wanted burned the wick hard young. They gave us legacies I don't feel we have a right to balk at, to be disappointed with, to insuate or flat-out complain it wasn't enough. I would think any number of the greats, especially the ones tormented and turned to drugs, feel they gave what they could that there was more to them that their undeniable talent. The world should appreciate them for them, not just what they could do and give us.
Okay, sorry, rant over, it just breaks my heart every time I hear that phrase, "what a waste of talent..." Maybe it was giving us the fruits of that talent, that they felt that's all we valued them for, that killed them. I'm in awe of anyone who was brave enough to give us any greatness to brighten our world, sometimes to their detriment. I would rather they keep it to themselves and be happy and survive, if the cost is their spirit ( Britney anyone?)...

Basil said...

I hope this isn't anyone, but sadly GM fits. He did almost die last year and whatever he has isn't going away (AND BTW, just because he is gay doesn't mean he has HIV. It could be anything).

Eeekalicious said...

@Jax What's that?? An unfunny death joke, followed by complaining about someone else's unfunny comment????

karenab said...

PS - I get what you mean, but I think when people say that, they arent saying what a waste of talent, they could have sang more songs for us, entertained us more. Take George for example, to us, he would seem to have everything or at least he SHOULD - beyond talented, good looking, made of money, he should be having the life we think we would have, if we had 1% of his talent to make it in life. Would I be upset if he decided now it was too much to take, and retire forever - no, I would be delighted if he were getting his life sorted to enable him to live happily til he's at least 90. I dont need him to give any more of himself, we will always have Older, after all, so thank you very much, he's given enough. But if this IS him - I'm sorry, what a waste. For him, not us.

Elissa said...

@Basil, you're right, the fact that he is gay doesn't mean he is HIV+, but his difficult battle with a particularly horrible pneumonia DOES, in fact, lend itself to the AIDS theory (it's also odd to me that pneumonia could cause him to lose his memory, ability to walk, and accent). I think that, couple with a fair degree of promiscuity, is behind the guesses here, and I tend to agree that this is likely him. It's sad, whoever it is.

On the other hand, I'm hoping this isn't Jonathan Rhys Meyers; he's on my Dead Pool list for 2013.

ForSure said...

Tuxedo Cat,
perhaps you should read the thread again. Jax was quoting a post by Roman Holiday, and then reacting to it. It was Roman Holiday who made the very bad 'wake me up before you go-go' joke.

George Michael. And that's sad for all the reasons why.

But I have to say, seeing David Bowie's name tossed out here gave me a pang of terror. I've always (humorously) considered him my personal patron saint of art, and though of course he's a man it never occurred to me that he'll die one day just like everyone else. And when that day comes it will be such a heartbreak to me. I hope he's well and in good health wherever he is.

Was in early teens when Wham! hit the big time. Much quibbling with girl friends crushing who didn't have a clue George Michael was so so gay (watch any 80s video, screamingly obvious). He's super talented and his ballads are the bomb. Whoever the subject of the blind is, much hope for a speedy recovery.

Eeekalicious said...

@Jax Sorry about that, Jax. Roman Holiday said it first. Maybe I'm missing a humour chip tonight.

Sigh. It's just that George Michael is one of my all-time favorite singers, and it's frustrating to see him relapse again.

I saw a video of George Michael, I believe it was just after the Olympics, showing the audience a special bed that he said saved his life...It moves the pneumonia patient in a rolling motion that helps stop the bacteria from settling in the lungs. He needs to go into long-term substance abuse treatment, like 18 months to get rid of his lifelong habits...

I'm so glad that Prince is all right. I had read a few years ago that he badly needed hip surgery, and that he could hardly walk. He's a Jehovah Witness. Apparently he was converted by one of his musicians or assistants. Jehovah Witnesses don't allow transfusions, so not sure how his hips are so healthy, but am very glad for him...

Still, it sounds more like George Michael.

"You play with fire and you get burnt......"

I assumed "fire" referred to drugs. I'm gay (and HIV-positive) and didn't take it as any sort of reference to HIV or AIDS or unsafe sex or anything else along those lines. And yes, if you play with drugs like crystal meth long enough eventually you will get burnt. No room for discussion there.

Sandy said...

I think it's George Michael. He's been on a downward spiral for years (the toilet trading, the park cruising, the drugs, the car crashes), and he nearly died last year of what I am sure was an AIDS related illness. It's horrible, given his enormous talent. But for some reason some great talents seem driven to destroy themselves. Perhaps the burden is too great.

PotPourri said...

He'll, I don't want this to be about anyone! God bless the soul that it is about. George Michaels struggles were caused by himself though, not cancer. I'm not talking HIV, I'm talking drugs, extreme living. He's just too damn young to die.

I was fortunate enough to see Bowie live in Finland, two days after the lollipop incident in Norway and a week before his hospitalization. It was an AMAZING gig and I'll cherish that memory forever.

Roman Holiday said...

@Jax, the joke was bad and I admitted as much! I was referring to his drug use!! Funny how you feel the need to to call people sad when in fact, most of your posts are filled with venom!!

Princess ButterKwup said...

Even if the joke was not referring to his drug use and was referring to HIV or AIDS, that is not a purely homosexual disease. If you're offended, than you were looking to be. If a woman who was having unprotected sex with a man got AIDS, I would say the same thing. Everyone relax.

Sad to hear that this is George Michael. Based on the text provided by FS (I think), I'd have to think it was him too. My 76-year old mom has had a cute celebrity crush on him for years, so she'll be sad to hear about this.

What about Elton John? There was an unspecified illness a little while ago and although he is a musician as well, he would be always A list as a singer for sure.

Anotheramy said...

This is George Michael. Enty has always hinted that his problems are AIDs related.

As a person who has put on some weight with age, I am tired of the fact that the only people we are allowed to be prejudiced against are fat people and smokers.
Billy Joel gained weight because he is aging. He looks fine. He actually performed really well at the Sandy fund raiser. I love how he rewrote his song and I love that he stayed sober for 5 minutes to sing it. The man is a raging alcoholic and at least used to have a problem with coke. A few extra pounds is the least of his worries.

I was thinking Barry M. too. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for George Michael. Whoever it is, it's sad, very sad.

Basil said...

@Anotheramy I was intrigued by your comment about Joel managing to stay sober long enough to sing his song. Made me wonder about the many many many celebrities out there with drug/booze problems, and something occured to me. For the amount of time that they are working hard (and celebs, like 'em or not do have to work hard) there is an equal, if not more, amount of downtime. They can have weeks or months of having NOTHING to do but possibly sit home and get drunk, or party every night, since of course they don't have to get up for work in the morning.

We everyday working joes don't have the luxury of a couple of months long benders, so we have our weekend fun, and pull up our socks on Monday morning and get back to work. It would be ALOT harder to do the Monday Morning thing if our 2 day weekend was a 2 month long period of doing nothing but drinking/drugging.

Is it possible that it a older singer? Someone from the 50's or 60's Era?

I really hope it's not George Michael. But I notice he hasn't tweet since he cancel his show, and his boyfriend have not even comment about him at all. I really hope it's not him.

Someone mention Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Jonathan sings, but he not consider a A list singer. At least I hope not.

Not Bowie. Even that pic (link) looks just like him, just older. He's thin to begin with, and the pic looks appropriate. No weight loss, not too bad on the coloring. If this blind is 'true', then it's most likely George Michael.
