Your Turn

After all the scary, horrifying murders this week, I think we all need a laugh, or a flashback to times of innocence. At some point this week, for some reason I was having a conversation with someone and in the course of the conversation they said three or four words straight from a Sheena Easton song. So, I finished the lyric so to speak. I thought they had said it because they knew the song, but it turns out it was just a random grouping of words. In fact, they didn't even know who the hell Sheena Easton was. Never heard of her. Finally they admitted that maybe they remembered the For Your Eyes Only song.

Sheena Easton was like the Scottish Madonna. I really don't know how else to categorize her. I loved her though and it sucks that people don't remember her, especially considering that she was always in the tabloids. I think she was paired up with Don Johnson, Prince, and some others that escape me now.

Then, in another conversation with a completely different person yesterday they admitted they had just discovered a band they were hearing about for the very first time. A band called Pink Floyd. I know, I know, but it is completely f**king true. That's why I had the song reference today, because that conversation got me in the mood last night.

So, anyway, what I want from everyone today is the first record/CD you bought. If all of you say something critically acclaimed I will know you are lying. And, I want to know the first concert you went to as well. And yes, The Wiggles counts. And no, no one sees a Smiths concert first time out. I want things like Sugarhill Gang or Men At Work with Red Rider opening. Black Sabbath with some band you don't remember. Spill it all.

First record - a 45 - More More More by Andrea True Connection. I was 13. How do you like it? How do you like it?

First concert - The Knack at Massey Hall. I was 15. They put on a great show and was floored when the crowd went nuts because the lead singer put his harmonica on.

(audieh_1 - Fly By Night is still a cool song)

Rod Stewart, "Atlantic Crossing". I know, but I was eleven.
By the way, the first record I ever possessed was Tina Turner's "Foreign Affair", which I still like listening to (and find not bad for a six year old at all!).

Oh and I forgot, I also remember Norman Greenbaum and Spirit in the sky. I also had the 45. Gosh, I feel old today. I also saw the Cowsills at the Illinois state fair when I was about 12 with my parents and sister. I don't know why I forgot about that one. I was so in love with Barry.

hockeychic - thanks for reminding me of Aldo Nova. Moosefan, I had an autographed poster of Madness amongst all my hockey posters and autographs on my bedroom wall (one of which was Wayne Gretzky's - and it faded from the sunlight).

I'm with ms, Enty - these posts are a nice diversion from time to time.

This one is for littleoleme: http://www.defranco.com/

First concert;
REM in 1984 at Williams College.

Micheal Stipe had an Afro. The guitarist had a monkey swinging from the arm of his guitar.

I was front row and thirteen.

It was thisclose to a religious experience.

The first album I ever bought with my own money was KISS Double Platinum. It was over $10.00 30 years ago--a fortune to a 9 year-old.

My first concert was U2: The Unforgettable Fire tour when I was 16. (Honest!) Also in the late 80s, I saw Modern English (I'll Melt with You), Howard Jones, The Psychedelic Furs, and Elvis Costello. Man, I wish I still had my t-shirts and tour books...

ooh kasnecka, I saw U2 on that tour as well! Bono had a shitfit on stage because the girls would NOT stop screaming and quite a few rushed the stage. They started to play A Sort of Homecoming when he suddenly waved his arms to get them to stop playing, then he yelled "WE ARE NOT THE BEATLES OR THE BAY CITY ROLLERS!" I was so happy he said that because I thought my ears would bleed from the screamers behind us. At one point one girl rushed at The Edge and pressed on his arm which caused him to stop playing. He gave her such a death stare.

my dad was real picky about what i could listen to.
i had classical, danny kaye (still one of my favorites), john phillips sousa, and all those old disney records. oh, and sound of music.
somebody bought me a little reel-to-reel tape recorder, and my brother would let me tape his glen campbell record and stuff from the radio. the first whole album i taped myself was the carpenters'. somebody gave me a bobby sherman LP.
the first vinyl i bought was carpenters, beach boys, beatles, i already had inherited a lot of my brother's stuff.
first concert? my grandmother took me to see liberace. and yeah, it was fun. i think i was maybe 8 ? first real concert? carpenters!

I have a lot of firsts.

Probably the very first concert I ever saw was a kids show by Sharon, Lois and Bram. I was probably 3 or 4. I saw a Monkees reunion concert when I was 10. But the first concert I actually bought my own ticket for was the Grapes of Wrath when I was... oh, 15 or 16. Somewhere there.

First album I bought myself? I don't remember. But I remember requesting and receiving both Paul McCartney's Pipes of Peace (for the "Say Say Say" duet with Michael Jackson) and the Jacko's Thriller album. I was probably 7 or so.

First tape(!) I remember having, and it may have been bought for me as a gift, was Appetite for Destruction, Guns N Roses. I went straight from Strawberry Shortcake records to that, honest to god.
First concert was Great White with Tesla opening for them, 1989. I think I was probably 12. I don't know what my mother was thinking when she let me go with my friend and her older sister. And I still like Tesla. Five Man Accoustical Jam is a great album.
