You Might Cry A While

Be warned, if you continue reading this and then look at the photos, it is highly likely you might cry for awhile. The boy in the top photo is Carlos Daniel Gonzalez. He is 6. He and his sister watched as their parents and five brothers and sisters were killed in Guatemala in a dispute over land rights. After Carlos is comforted by police, he gets up and goes to comfort his four year old sister. Wow.

Sometimes I think Americans are just not appreciative enough of how good we have it here, in comparison. Turkish Taffy said...: Co-sign Kim D Esq. This is why you have things like contracts and titles and deeds. This happens a lot in Africa and Asia, too, where the courts and law enforcement are lax, corrupt or nonexistent.

Sue in MO said...: What has happened to these children is horrendous. But please know this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are thousands of children who have been through similarly horrible circumstances - and who have been abandoned, lost, or are suffering from disease and malnutrition. There are a lot of groups out there who do wonderful things for the people of Guatemala... and those of you who want to help may consider asking them if there is any further word on these children. One of the groups I can recommend is Mayan Families - a non profit where nearly 100% of any funds received are used to help people directly. You can visit their website at www.mayanfamilies.org. I know they do great work - because I adopted my daughter from Guatemala over six years ago. If you are having a rough day, just read a few of the stories on their web page. I guarantee it will put things in perspective for you.

cinephreak said...: the last picture in the NY Daily News article is what was so sad... The police officers carrying bodies, and two officers had small body bags cradled in their arms. You just know those are the two babies. Why would the shoot the babies?! What does that accomplish?!
