@888 etc. When one race (Whites) have systematically oppressed another race (Blacks) for centuries, there will be residual anger by the minority which has been oppressed. If you can't see that actions like that have consequences, then you aren't thinking logically.

Yes, everyone has the vote now, but that is only relatively recently.

If you can manage to try to put yourself in the other person's place, maybe you can understand.

Ingrid, what a very special time for me.!

Tuxedo Cat, lets put yourself in my place. I have not personally oppressed anyone but when I'm considered a racist because of the colour of my lily white skin, there is going to be some residual anger. As the commenter said above, s/he knows why he is racist; it's a result of the racism experienced at the hands of people of colour.

for marijuana legalization - and taxation - don't worry the man will figure out a way to tax it - alcohol is pretty easy to make to and plenty of people of the redneck variety get caugt moonshining - though the people who grow pot are much smarter no doubt - once the government hops onto a revenue stream they rarely give it up w/o a fight - and god knows that the government at all levels and persuasion need more money they are in a world of hurt - Pension plans under water, rising labor costs, rising electricity and fuel costs - not to mention all the rising healthcare costs because Obamacare costs that are coming down the pike - I ruly hope that Obama threads the needle and somehow we get economic growth and rising tax revenues with less people in the work force, rising energy prices, rising food prices, declining housing prices. Its never been a recipe before economic success but hey there is always a first time. It should be a interesting 4 years to see how the msm spins the unexpected economic downturn as Bush's fault.

It 's the human race.

Although we don't want to believe racism still exists in the US, I read on msnbc.com that Obama only got 39% of the white vote and 89% of the people who voted for Romney are white. How else do you explain those numbers without bringing race into the equation? BTW I'm in that 39% group. I think Obama did a great job and will continue to do a great job for the next 4 years. I live in the Chicago area and we're very proud that our Pres calls Chicago his home.

Alcohol needs to be distilled, brewed, etc. Producing MJ only requires sticking a seed in the ground. "Bootlegging" weed will be too easy to enforce serious tax enforcement.

I'm stressing this because now that we have full legalization on the West Coast (502 effectively means full legalization for OR and CA too), the pro-legalization movement needs to be honest about what the effects will be. The tax revenue will be nil, certainly nowhere near as high as liquor taxes. Most of the restrictions will be impossible to enforce. All of that hoo-ha about taxing and regulating MJ was a sham to get enough non-users to vote for legalization. We lied. And by the way, 99% of the politicians, law enforcement, etc. knew all that stuff was lies, lies they needed too as cover to get out of the MJ prohibition business painlessly.

I'm sorry that we lied but marijuana never should have been illegal in the first place.

JW said...

Illinois fan - And by your statistics Obama got at least 89% of the black vote and only 10% voted for Romney. Why those racists! Not voting for the white guy because he is white. What a totally specious and inane argument.

I felt the same way.

Unfortunately racism of all kinds is a part of our society, so is ageism, weight-ism, elitism, etc. Discrimination is ugly, but it comes in many forms.

I reserve the right to still blame Bush for most of the things that have happened in the past 13 years that piss me off.

I lived through 8 years of a President I disagreed with and who embarassed me who ran a country that Clinton left in relatively good condition straight downhill.

I didn't bitch about it after he took office and I got over the hanging chad thing --and I prayed he'd do right for us--and not do anything too dangerous or too foolish that would hurt us.

I'm sorry but it's someone else's turn to take their 8 years of a president they don't agree with. And if you don't like him and what his party stands for--you have four years to get your pick organized and able to compete.....and maybe it will be my turn again.

Right now I have a president that I feel relatively safe with, who I'm not ashamed of, who I believe has some of the same priorities I have.

I'm good with that and I plan to send him all the good vibes I can.

He's a young man, and I believe his best is yet to come--and he may do a lot for our country after he is not weighed down by the responsibilty of the presidency. Many of our presidents go on to do great service after leaving office.

Oh and on another topic I thought Mr Romney did a great job with his speech. If he had shown that genuine humanity in his campaign things might have gone differently. I feel confident he too will go on to do good things for the country--he comes from a family who does a lot of public service and I think he will continue that.

On the flip side--that guy Akin's concession speech was right up there with Donald Trump a for the poorest loser of the night. What a tool. McCaskill played him like a violin and simply by being himself---he got her to Washington.

Last night was a happy one for me because the candidates I support won--but it was also sad to see our country so cut right down the middle---half of us win, half of us didn't get what we wanted.

I hope the other side takes this as motivation to do better and to do what it takes to earn the votes they need--in the end if they do that--it means what they stand for is what the most people wants. They have four years....and we do it all again. :)

@vip, also don't forget the "some girls, they rape easy" roger rivard lost too. Such a win for the ladies

astrogirl said...

I read with a happy heart that all seven of those guys who made the ridiculous rape and related abortion comments didn't get in.

Sherry said...

Astrogirl: Thanks for pointing that out. I usually don't make devisive comments but I noticed NO ONE on the GOP side mentioned those guys as deserving of being in office.
And Romney's concession speech should have been a lesson to all of them. Say what you will about not agreeing with his politics but his goodbye was classy all the way.

Eeekalicious said...

@JW We are not just individuals. We are members of different groups. As members of different groups we automatically receive privileges or problems that go along with those groups.

Anyone who is White has to understand that they have willingly or even passively been a beneficiary of those privileges. That's part of living in a society.

astrogirl said...

No worries Sherry. Women the world over sighed in collective relief over that one...

MadLyb said...

Well, looks like there is no shortage of rabid Obama haters. Karma, please. Thank you.

MadLyb said...

I was surprised to hear this morning that a right wing co-worker voted for Obama because of one issue: women's reproductive rights. I guess Democrats are starting to pull some of the Republican one-issue voters away. Most liberals vote based on a plethora of issues, just FYI.

I will probably end up losing my job, because Obama plans on cutting the Medicare Bad Debt Recovery Program. It's already been cut down to 60% this next year, and each year it will drop another 5-10%. Kind of scary. How will these hospitals survive if they are not able to recover some bad debt that lower income people are just not able to pay.

KittensRUs said...

I'm a woman and I despise Obama, but I figure he'll fuck up so incredibly in the next two years that we are assured a GOP landslide in 2014. So all's well that ends well. I'm glad I have a job and I feel very sorry for those who do not, because you're not going to see things improve anytime soon.

Wil said...

Hum .. EL is either drunk with glee over the election and taking the day off .. or he is despondent and taking the day off. Either way .. hope to see you tomorrow, EL.

And Lilo .. your fear for hospitals is unnecessary. They will still survive by sending people like me into bankruptcy as happened after my transplant surgery. I lost my house and credit .. so that should no doubt make you very happy. Mazel Tov!

MadLyb said...

@Armatel - that is probably one of the more vile spews I've read from your ilk online, and that's saying something. Are you demon possessed perchance?

Eeekalicious said...

@Wil I am so sorry you had to go through that. I wish I could have beamed you to Canada and avoided all that. It is terrible.

Eeekalicious said...

@Armatel You still don't get that other countries are happy that the US elected Obama because he's a *superb human being*, not because he's Black.

That he is the first Black president is just a side benefit, because it shows that racism in America is perhaps finally on the downslide. Obama has been compared to Kennedy (White) more than to any other person!!!

So far no reports of Mormons looting .

Tranquil Serenity said...

Having just read through the majority of the comments, I must say... it seems like most of the people telling others to "shut the fuck up", or "fuck off" are those who voted for Obama.

You can throw around all the political discussion you want about caring about people and blahblahblah, but if you can't respond to a differing opinion without telling that person they're an idiot, need to "vote Dem until you figure out what you really are," and "shut the fuck up," how much are you really the party that supposedly has a social conscience?

Those who live in glass houses...

Not A Ninny said...

See, Mormons loot so politely that you never notice...

Agent, if you want to get into the particulars of 502, you have to understand that Holcomb (the force behind the initiative) is one clever broad.

astrogirl said...

I hope Obama does a wonderful job and then hands over the reins to your first woman President.

I understand you are on different teams but its the one country, don't you all want him to do well, so you all prosper too? It's time you stood together people...

B.P., I'm starting to figure that out. I located her opposition's point of view : http://www.nooni502.com/wordpress/

Pretty fascinating to follow it.

Theresa said...

Just thoughts to consider..several of our previous Presidents have been opposed to Roe v Wade, but it can not be overturned, nor have prev presidents attempted to have it overturned, so his saying he wanted or wished it to be overturned was a moot point as he knew. As for the issue of Gay marriage...Obama trotted that out as the elections drew closer..but while their opinions on it differed, both Obama and Romney held the same view that it should be a decision left to the state level. I don't know why people keep crying out that it was a victory for gays and women, because nothing will change on either front. Romney simply doesn't feel tax payers should fund abortions. When it comes down to it, what's wrong with that? Meanwhile our economy is tanking far worse than 4 yrs ago, and Harry Reid today said they were already planning on raising the debt ceiling again..We are becoming Greece. We should all vote for what's best for the country as a whole..then fight on our state level for those other things that matter to us personally. As it is we are now so divided that I'm not sure this country will ever recover.

HalleGoLightly said...

I don't see eye to eye with those who voted for Robme because "The economy was the #1 issue." I see Robme and his peeps for what they are - the people who fucked up the country. Now they're saying, "The other guys aren't fixing things quickly enough, so put us back in." Uhhh...no.

Totally agree B. Profane. The Ron Paul crowd is always good for a laugh. If you talk to one of them, they'll make sense on a couple of issues. If you let them keep talking, they'll reveal themselves to be the batshit crazy conservatives they are. They're the crowd who were cheerleaders for 6 & 1/2 years of Bush's presidency. Then, when he proved to be a disaster, jumped ships like rats saying, "He wasn't really a conservative." Funny that you defended everything he did for 1 and 1/2 terms.

Same goes for those who are pissed Obama won saying things like, "Both parties suck. We need a viable 3rd party." No, both parties don't suck. Democrats have given us unions, the 40-hour work week, overtime, workplace safety laws, Social Security, Medicare, etc... I'm very proud to be a Democrat. You being ashamed of being a Republican is your own thing.

To grow pot in the ground is easy and distilling alcohol has a few steps, but when the issue is revenue which the state needs way more and more of just to become halfwway solvent, if as and when marijuana is legalizd it will be considered a revenue opportunity by the local/state/federal governments and will not take kindly to people just growing a few pot plants for personal/friends - I doubt that will happen - goverments being goverments and all. And maybe the press will finally cover all the fn things Obama has done to our friends - Fast an Furious where they let guns walk to try and make the lie that 90% of all mexican guns come from the US - hundreds of dead mexicans and 1 dead border agent. (And no Bush did not start the program for Obama - it started in octobe of 2009) Or the targeted ex-judicial killings of American citizens, the drone wars where we just airdrop in blow crap up and leave (what Obama accused the Bush Administration of doing), the libyan Benghazi fiasco, not to mention the stiffing of our friends in Poland and Czech republic over missile defense for actually what did we get from russia - so sorry we are not loved because of the Magical Obama.

And we can talk when your gas prices hit 5 a gallon or more, your electricity prices keep going higher - but as long as dem suppliers get those great contracts for Solyndra and that great battery maker in Detroit where people are paid to push brooms not make batteries.

@JW You sound exactly like an entitled White person. Attitudes like yours cause the race problem in the first place. Your race has had centuries of privilege and you are pissed off because maybe you aren't just getting every job you want because you're White.

Yes I'm a educated female (you probably hate them too bc they take YOUR jobs), I believe in equal rights and pay for women.

Theresa, I understand what you're getting sat, but it does matter. The person elected to the white house and their beliefs really set the tone for the rest of the country. You're also forgetting that they appoint Supreme Court justices who are appointed for life. The President's beliefs and ideals inform all the decisions they make, even if a certain bill seems to have nothing to do with abortion. I'm from Virginia, where earlier this year our republican governor signed into law a bill that mandates ALL WOMEN MUST UNDERGO A TRANSVAGINAL ULTRASOUND PROCEDURE before they get an abortion. I definitely don't want other governors to feel empowered to sign bills like this across America. It DOES matter.
By the way, I'm not being nasty here, I'm just pointing out some things you may not have considered.

JW said...

Tuxedo Cat, I'm a white, university educated (graduate degree) FEMALE who doubts you'll ever take my job. And yes, I know Jack died last year, it hasn't stopped jackasses like you from canonizing him. Oh so ButterKwup, you know this how? Blacks and Latinos or whoever voted for Obama because of his skin color and not that they thought he was the best choice for them going forward? Which would mean that man hispanic and black people really thought Romney was the best candidate for them and their futures, but they went with the Black guy? Yeah, you keep believing that and tell me how it works out for you.
