Two Boys Strangled By Python That Escaped From Pet Store In Canada

This story is so sad, but I almost feel like I have to write about it, just so I can maybe start to feel better. It is hard though. Two boys, brothers, one seven and the other five were spending the night at a friend's house. The house is located above a pet store. Police believe that the owner of the store did not contain the snake properly and the snake slithered up a ventilation duct into the home above and it strangled the two boys to death. The store owner said that he is in shock and that he is the one who discovered the bodies. he thought they were sleeping until he saw the hole in the floor. He also said they are the sons of his best friend. Police have not decided whether they will be filing charges against the owner of the shop which is located in New Brunswick, Canada.

So so awful. I really hppe the boys were asleep the whole time and didn't have to be scared.

This happened in my husband's very small hometown, population 7000 - they are in shock

Ugh ugh ugh. What a nightmare.

That is horrible. So so sad. Those sweet boys.

Oh my god. Tragic doesn't begin to describe this.

Sorry but this sound weird... what happen to the kids' friend? was he also strangled?

This just makes me sick to my stomach. I can't even imagine what their parents must be going through.

Heartsick. I can't.

My heart truly goes out to everyone impacted. How devastating.

Not to be more morbid, but don't those snakes strangle before eating? I'm just grateful they didn't find one of the boys in the snake.

@L - there was no third kid. The owner of the store is friends with the boys' dad and that's why they were sleeping over.

L said...

OK so the friend was sleeping in another room and is unharmed...
I fell for the family of the poor dead children but still cannot help but call BS on this one. Unless the python intended to eat the children i believe it's quite improbable he would kill, and in particular kill both of them

this whole story smells 10 different ways. beyond tragic, I feel terrible for boys. read story online and see what you think.

This is beyond my imagination...they should have been so safe in their beds.....

It's all over the news and I know more details will be forthcoming- in the meantime, I think negligence or some such charge should happen.

People really need to be responsible for their 'pets.'

"this whole story smells 10 different ways" - I agree.

Poor kiddos.

The story smells fishy.

Pythons only kill when they are feeling like they are in danger. Two sleeping boys is not danger. And why didnt bro1 wake up when bro 2 was attacked?
Or the snake was hungry, but he didnt eat the boys. So also BS on that one.

I doubt this is the true story. From what I've heard, the police is investigating, because they also believe it is BS. Tracing calls and stuff. You don't do that if you believe the story as described by the owner of the python.

Long story short; what the python did is not python behavior.

Shit You Can't Buy said...

And what is the neighbour doing in the house/bedroom of the kids?

I heard on the news today that the python likely hadn't been properly fed. Who knows though, that could be wild speculation.

I hate to say it but how do we know that a person didn't really kill the kids and just blame the snake?

That is fucking awful.

I thought this joint was entertainment gossip. The only depressing shit I should read here is Selena Gomez still banging that dipshit or maybe a hottie has gone full lesbo.

Just read up on this, it is a snake store, full of them. It makes me so cranky when people are irresponsible with their animals. Totally preventable deaths.

Jacq said...

Even if the snake was not properly fed, it could have eaten - oh, I dunno - ONE OF THE ANIMALS IN THE STORE? I am doubtful that the snake went up through the vent and asphyxiated two sleeping kids. I guess the autopsy findings would be the only way to prove if it was done by the snake.
I read an article about child predators several years ago, and part of it has always stuck with me: no one without kids of their own (friends, family, otherwise) want to just keep your kids. It seems strange to me that there weren't other children in the apartment. I can't see myself letting my son have a sleep over anywhere just by himself.

Something's off with this. The snake strangled one child then slithered over to kill the next? Um..... No.
Still horribly sad.

That's awful. How horrible for those babies and their families.

I do wonder though, that snake targeted both kids? And the other did run off? Really. Hmm. No. That guy did something shady and blamed the snake.

I meant 'didn't run off'. Crap on a cracker!!!

Snakes quite often kill something that is slightly too large for them to eat, realize after it is dead that they can't eat it, and leave the body.

SophiaB said...

You called it. The snake was actually unregistered and from inside the home. Tragic.

The snake had been in the pet store since 2000. It was a banned species - African Rock Python. Not allowed in New Brunswick. It escaped, crawled through the ventilation system and fell - FELL - from a ceiling vent into the room where the kids were sleeping. There wasn't a hole in the floor.

The behaviour in this situation isn't normal for a python - killing, but not eating. When they are frightened, they bite. However, Rock pythons are known for being very "grumpy" snakes. I don't know if that played a part in it or not.

But the pet store owner, and family friend should be charged. He had a restricted & banned critter in his shop. Furthermore, he did not keep it in a secure environment. If it had been secure, it could not have escaped.

This doesn't sound like snake behavior, as so many have pointed out. I wonder if they'll find out the boys were murdered.

Something is very off. Two children and the second one never woke up while first was being strangled by the snake? Why were they at the home of an adult friend for a sleep over? Those poor little boys and their parents, this is a terrible story.

'The brothers had been visiting the apartment of a friend whose father owned an exotic pet store on the floor below, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Alain Tremblay said at a news conference in Campbellton. Tremblay said the African rock python was being kept inside the second floor apartment, not inside the pet store as authorities had previously stated.'-CBS news

Also: 'A spokesman for the provincial Natural Resources Department, said no permit was issued for an African rock python and provincial authorities weren't aware it was being kept at the apartment. The department said the snake is generally only permitted in accredited zoos, unless there is a special permit.

Tremblay said the snake was housed in a large glass enclosure that reached the ceiling of the apartment and escaped through a small hole in the ceiling connected to the ventilation system. He said the snake made its way through the ventilation system and moved toward the living room, where the boys were sleeping. The pipe collapsed and the snake fell.

The friend of the boys was sleeping in another room and was unharmed.'

So tragic, this story scares the bejeebus out of me! It's an Urban myth gone mad and I'm almost hoping that the whole killer snake escaping deal is a cover up for a heinous murder.
