Darlene Cates Has Died



Back when the Sally Jessy Raphael show was a thing people watched on a daily basis, a screenwriter was watching one day when a woman named Darlene Cates was a guest. The subject? Too Heavy To Leave The House. A precursor to My 600 Pound Life. The writer, Peter Hedges thought Darlene would be great for the role of Mamma Grape, the mother of Leonardo DiCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. This past weekend, Darlene died. She was 69.
