Diet Soda Just Like Meth For Teeth

If you have ever wondered why your teeth might look like those of someone who smokes meth all day, there is a new study that shows that a woman in her 30's who drinks two liters of diet soda everyday for three to five years had the same eroded teeth of a 29 year old woman who is addicted to meth or a 51 year old long time crack user. So, the moral to be learned from this report published in the journal General Dentistry is crack is better than soda or meth.

In all fairness, who drinks two liters of diet soda every day? My god, I would peeing ALL THE TIME!

I believe it.

Two liters of diet soda every day??? Mix in a beer. Geez.

Cathy, I actually know somebody who drinks that much of Diet Pepsi and probably more. She hates any other fluid, including water and so DP is all she drinks, and she really does drink a lot of it. She must have her bladder trained, or something.

Anyway, she has all kinds of autoimmune problems plus diabetes and I have tried to tell her so many times that Diet Coke has actually been known to cause these things but she won't listen to me. I guarantee that half (if not more) of her health problems would be gone if she cut down to only one can of diet coke a day and did some serious water drinking. ANY soda, and that especially goes for those poisonous diet sodas, are absolutely horrible for your health and you wouldn't believe how many people only drink soda to hydrate themselves. It's horrible.

I've been drinking it for YRS and my dentist says my teeth are good....

I don't think 2 liters is beyond the realm of possibility. That's 8 glasses, and we are always being told to drink 8 glasses of water per day.

I think this only applies to cola-like sodas. My dentist told me it's the phosphoric acid in colas (coke, pepsi, dr pepper) that erodes enamel so it's not just diet sodas.

bottom line: drink beer :)

So eventually everything will make us fat, ugly & dead.

I'm 62 and have been drinking 3 cans of diet coke every morning for over 40 years. (I don't like coffee). My dentist is very happy with my teeth and gums. Maybe it helps that I also drink a lot of water in the afternoon and evening.

When I was a kid, I watched a cousin throw in his recently fallen out tooth into a cup of soda so we could watch it disintegrate.

nunaurbiz said...

I'm with the beer crowd.

I know of a person who has a hole between her two front teeth. I always wondered how that hole got rotted out then someone pointed out that she sucked down soda all day long through a straw that hit her front teeth. Yuck. But then, she's a yukky person.

Marieeee said...

I'm usually really good about not drinking sodas, but this makes me never want to drink one ever again.

Ruby Soho said...

@lottaColada......pretty crazy, huh?
My grandmother was a school nurse, and this was a demonstration she did every year. The whole tooth completely dissolved away in a few days!! I didn't grow up drinking a lot of soda!! Lol

Annie Hall said...

@Susan, yes it is precisely because you mix it up with lots of water. That makes all the difference in the world. So many people do not do that.

LottaColada said...

@Ruby- yep, all it took was 2 days if I recall correctly.

Yabba Dabba Doo said...

Totally possible. At my last place of work, I knew a guy who'd go through easily 5-6 cans of Diet soda a day (we worked at a place where soda was offered to everyone for free). That stuff is deceptively addictive.

MISCH said...

can't stand the stuff

And I thought it was bad that I drink a large glass (about 12-16 oz) of diet soda every day. Nothing like other stupid people to make you feel good about yourself! L

I'm pretty much off soda but I feel like this is a good spot to tell you about a clueless coworker of mine. One day, she was complaining of a headache. I suggested that perhaps she might be dehydrated - it's the only reason I ever get a headache. She informed me that she couldn't possibly be dehydrated, because she had had 2 litres of diet Pepsi that day.

Just this morning, she came to work wheezing and huffing and puffing (as she often does), and said "I'm having trouble breathing today, I don't know if it's allergies or what?". Um, no, the reason you're having trouble breathing is because you smoke even though you have acute asthma.

There wasn't really a point to my stroey, I just needed to get that off my chest, because it really annoys me when people refuse to take any responsibility for their own health! *L*

*story

figgy said...

Yeah @Maja, Stupid Coworker stories are always fun! ;-P

I feel bad drinking like 1-2 Diet Cokes a week! I've weaned myself to drink Lacroix water when I want something bubbly. But Diet Coke is so good when I eat popcorn and watch DVDs of Downtown Abbey!

My grandmother was warning me about Diet Coke in the *1980s*! As with so many other things, I wish she were still alive so I could tell her she was RIGHT. haha

FunnyBits said...

Unfortunately this article is bias and not very accurate. If you read the actual journal article it states that the woman who they studied hadn't had dental care in 23 years and would have had eroding teeth anyway. They need to do a more complete study. The acid in diet coke dissipates too fast to cause erosion.

I drink a TON of diet coke...full disclosure.

CantHaveMyPurse said...

I worked with a guy who drank 24 cans of Coke a DAY. He was wondering why he was so jittery. Really. The Dr told him to back off and he did for awhile. I'm not sure if he ever started up again. My Dad would drink a case a day too. I haven't had a soda since 1995. I like it but I just stopped and never went back. Wish I could say the same for chocolate.

SophiaB said...

I used to til I figured out why my tummy hurt all the time. My teeth are fine. That was years ago but I drank that gnarly stuff for YEARS.

Audrey said...

I have a Soda Stream and I LOVE it. I don't buy any of the flavors, though. I just squeeze some fresh lemon juice in the bottle and voila, just like La Croix for a whole lot less $$.

SophiaB said...

The autoimmune did not start to go away in my case til i cut out gluten and processed foods. I figure it will take me a total of three years to fully recover. I do not have diabetes but it was a-comin' on.

Invite your friend to watch Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead and Food Matters. If you have Netflix, Fresh and Farm, Inc. are also quite edumacational and inspiring.

But some people are very stuck in the illness cycle and the only thing we can do is love them and not enable them. This can be difficult. I know. I almost died of my own resistance to getting well.

Tina Mallette said...

juice has similar acidic qualities as colas so should we stop drinking orange juice or eating oranges

moderation and Sensodyne Pro Enamel toothpaste are the keys

Tina Mallette said...

a lot of recovering addicts drink a lto of Coke and Red Bull and coffee for that caffeine and sugar buzz

Red Bull to me is the most putrid tasting confection and it has citrus juices in it, also acidic. I guess adding vodka would be an improvement.

Tomatoes are acidic.

Tina Mallette said...

Audrey so are you getting basically the club soda flavor with Soda Stream? Or is it just carbonating water? I am weaning myself off diet pop by firstly drinking more water with lemon in the first place but also adding just enough juice to club soda to give it some pizzazz, when I get bored of just water, but I wondered if that Soda Stream would be cheaper than buying cans of Club Soda.

@Sophia, I have seen that movie and the guy he recruits in the middle is amazing! I love that movie. I am so glad to hear that your health is improving! I love hearing stories like that.

The problem with my friend is that she has very good metabolism, so she is super skinny and unfortunately, because our society is so weight obsessed, she thinks that this means that she doesn't have to change anything about her diet. I can have her watch Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead ten times in a row and she won't ever think that it applies to her because she is skinny.

She refuses to equate the fact that she has a lot of the same health problems as a lot of obese people with the fact that she needs to change her diet. It's quite frustrating, but I stopped letting myself worry about when I'm around her because it is a big waste of my energy. When she complains about her health, I just stay silent these days.

MsPink Kitty said...

I believe that the larger issue is all the chemicals in the soda htat we drink. The artificial sweetners are highly carcinogenic as well.

Soda is bad for oyu. my gastrointrologist told me the facts 10 years ago.

lazyday603 said...

My 49 year old sister who we always teased for never not having a Big Gulp cup of soda in her hand finally took the leap and had all her remaining teeth pulled last week. Our Mom who never was seen without a Coke bottle in her hand had to do the same at about the same age. I'm so glad I always prefered water.

librariantobe said...

There are articles going around the internet about how horrible soda is for your health. One of them mentioned that crime scene crews keep a bottle of Coca-Cola in their vans to help clean up stains and that you can use soda to scrub your toilet clean. Don't know if it's true or an urban legend but ugh!

mygeorgie said...

@librariantobe: I believe it! if you want to clean a restaurant griddle & rid it of all the bacon fat/grease/build up, pour a bit of cola on it while it's still warm & Voila! scrapes clean in an instant! Frightening (but not scary enough to keep me from having the odd Wiser's w/ Diet coke ;)

Tyger Lilly said...

Dammit! So this means I have to decide each morning whether I'm going to drink Diet Coke or smoke meth? No more doing both? (For the record I drink water all day & I'm way too type-A to begin with, so meth would turn me into... well, I guess Paz De La Huerta if you believe previous BIs)

YoMismo-RememberKermitGosnell said...

A couple of things.

-Most people drink two or more litres of liquid everyday. I, for example, when was living in a city where the water was distasteful for some years, only drank sodas. That was horrible for my wallet, but my teeth were as good as ever.

-The dissolving teeth, or grease is true, but you don't have to be afraid.
First of all: those things are out of life (not attached to a living body), therefore are as if you cut your finger and leave it in the countryside, it will rot in a week or so.
Second: soda doesn't stay in your mouth for a long time (you swallow a glass in less than a second), drinking two liters can take less than two minutes with the beverage in your mouth. It's a lot of days that adding two minutes to two minutes, that you can add up a couple of days (60 minutes an hour * 24 hours a day * 2 days / 2 minutes you have the soda in your mouth = 1440 days = almost 4 years).

I got quite a lecture from my dentist last year about Diet Coke. It's always in meetings in my office so you just drink, drink, drink away your meetings with Diet Coke.

My enamel had become loose and now I have to swish 3x a day with enamel building mouth wash. And I had a cracked tooth due to loose enamel that had to be fixed.

I am not 100% off it, but she scared me straight enough to switch to water for meetings and I don't buy it for my home anymore. I do tend to have a can with lunch once in awhile.

It's a really hard habit to break. Plus like others, I figured since it was 'Diet' I wasn't eroding my teeth with sugar. Yeah, um, no, genius I am.

Tru Leigh said...

I used to drink diet soda all day long. Then I learned the artificial sweetners are really bad for you, so I limit myself to one or two a week. No apparent effect on my teeth or waistline.

Rosemary Young said...

My dentist says carbonated drinks wear away the tooth enamel; however you can lessen the risk by drinking through a straw, so the beverage reaches the back of your mouth without washing over the teeth.

I have a friend about 75 who drinks this much and more. Lots of bone problems these days with hands and feet. Teeth are horrible. She will not drink water or tea or anything else. Absolutely refuses to read anything about artificial sweeteners for over 20 years now. I would not drink that stuff ever!!

mygeorgie said...

@Rockmesexyjesus: I believe your knickers (& probably that bible) are wrapped too tight that you have to come here & blow off steam. About the merits of diet coke no less.

Chill the fuck down already.

Slap-n-Tickle said...

They'll have to pry the can of diet coke from my cold, dead hand. I love the stuff and have been drinking it for years on a daily basis. I take care of my teeth and haven't had any problems to date.

car54 said...

My dad drove a Coca Cola delivery truck before he and my mother were married, and at age 30 he had almost NO teeth left and my mother swore it was from sucking on Cokes all day.

She did not allow me to have any sodas at all when I was little and I never developed a taste for them--I had perfect teeth until I was maybe 25 yrs old--and my mother always swore it was because of not drinking soda.

PJJ said...

How dumb are you? FSP made a joke and never mentioned beer helping teeth. What a waste

Audrey said...

@ Tina - it's just carbonated water. I can't taste the difference between that and soda water. It has definitely saved me money. Also, I can get "refilled canisters" instead of brand new ones at a discounted price. I love it and would recommend it to anyone.

rock me sexy jesus said...

pjj the whole story is about teeth why would I not infer the beer was supposed to do something for the teeth? you need to take a step back and sit the fuck down

mygeorgie its not about the merits of diet coke but you know that youre just trying to twist my bible knickers, its about how unintelligent the comments are

Sherry R. said...

People need to be conscious of how they drink something. You don't have to let the fluid bathe your teeth.

librariantobe said...

@Sherry, it's not just teeth soda affects. Liver, skin, kidney, and yes, bone problems can all result from drinking too much of this stuff.

audrey said...

I am old enough to remember when a specific brand of artificial sweetener was said to cause cancer. I am not certain that the ones they manufacture these days are any safer. It is beneficial that I can't handle the after taste of that stuff, and get violent headaches if I ingest it in any form. How any one can get past that horrible taste is beyond me.

Rock Me Sexy Jesus obviously you are having a tough day. Enjoy it.

Like I said (somewhere). Everyone is on their path and maybe she is teaching YOU the lesson of boundaries. Nor everyone can hear what we have to say, and I know for a fact I wore a lot of people out with my agony before I got the onfo in the order I needed it in to kickstart my healing. I don't talk to everyone about what I am doing but ya never know who you might touch. That Phil guy in Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead is THE REASON I love that movie so much. It touches my heart to watch him sharing what he has learned with his community. Makes me cry tears of pure joy.

I know a bunch of really unhealthy skinny people, and yes the arrogance and dismissal is hard to take. It must be awful hearing your coworker coughing. I woukd find it painful to listen to her confusion too.

Good luck finding a way to fend her off. I am allergic to cigarette offgassing and for me that is a perfect excuse to avoid people who hold the gun to their heads threatening slow suicide and acting like they have no say... :)

SophiaB said...

Yep. That plus GMOs and fake foods are just a recipe for disaster. All on purpose, hence Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. Good info and fun to watch. I am deeply grateful to some random person on Facebook who posted the link at EXACTLY the perfect time in my life. It led the way to a major life transformation. I am unrecognizable.

SophiaB said...

I agree. If this was true there woukd be a boatload of toothless people walking around. It is the damage to the gut that is the real problem IMHO. Does sound like disinfo/misinfo, misleading and incomplete, diverting from info that can be useful. Scare tactics are kinda fun for the PTBs.
