Your Turn

Shana Moakler says breastfeeding is like incest and is gross. She thinks breasts are for adults only. Do you agree?

She is, as my mom wld say, a first class idiot.

She's an idiot. She purchased her breasts with sex in mind so of course she cares nothing about their original purpose.

Cathy said...

What a moron. Any reasonable person is aware that the whole purpose of breasts are to provide nutrients to babies. The only reason that men have nipples too is because they form before the gender of a baby is determined. It's just our culture that has sexualized them.

HannahBanana said...

Oh geesh, really? That girl is as vapid as they come...& why are we being subjected to her imbecilic thoughts???

Ugh. And this chick is a mother- to girls...

“I just look at my breasts as like sexual, and I think it’s like incestual,” she said. “It’s gross. I don’t like it.”

Travis Barker’s ex-wife said she opted not to breastfeed, but quickly added that she supports women who do.

“I was selfish… I couldn’t do it,” she said. “But I totally support it. I think it’s awesome.”

Contradict yourself much?

Ummm, who is this person?

HannahBanana said...

By the by, I remember her & travis' reality show, & what stood out most was that SHE NEVER GOT OUT OF BED!!! Like, EVER. Travis always took care of their kids. So WTH does she know about parenting?! Breasts are for the purpose of feeding babies first & foremost...I truly believe this bitch had a lobotomy somewhere along the way.....hard to believe her & Paris fought, they should be besties!

SkittleKitty said...

I agree she's a moron. That was the question, right?

Terri said...

I think she has it bacwards.

Katie Cunningham said...

She is a moron, but I agree, I think it is effing gross. Every time I walk into the bathroom at work there is a woman with her shirt around her neck and her nasty saggy after birth breasts hanging out, and her stomach everywhere, while she breast pumps.

Almost everything about child birth and rearing grosses me out. But they are just not for adults clearly. Even if I cannot fathom why men still want to sleep with their wives after they give birth. Guess it is something you don't understand until you try!

Staple611 said...

I think it's kinda gross, too. I know it's good for babies, etc., blah blah, and I think Shanna is an idiot, but deep down, I do think it's a little gross.

Just because it's one hundred percent natural doesn't mean it doesn't give the the heebie jeebies.

Katie Cunningham said...

Staple611-YES exactly. People freak out when you admit it, but I am sure we aren't alone in our thoughts. I am sure almost every single husband ever is like GROSS. Secretly of course.

I only object when the kid is old enough to speak or has teeth...time to wean, moms.

That's just my pedestrian American bias, it's totally normal in the rest of the world to do it until the kid is school aged. WHO recommends until 2-3 yrs of age.

Whatever works for you, I can't stand the La Leche League nazis or the Moakler passing judgement for either choice.

Tempestuous Grape said...

That is one of the most vile and disgusting things I have ever read in my life. How sad for her and ANYONE who thinks this way.

NomNom83 said...

Bleeding nipples ARE gross (and hurt like a mother). But incest? It's not like I'm getting off on it and neither is my kid.

If Shanna's not comfortable with it, fine, don't do it. But spouting off about it being like incest just makes her sound like an idiot. Does Jenny McCarthy have the day off or something?

Robert said...

Shana Moakler (whoever the hell she is) is a moron.

Katie Cunningham said...

Agreed. Gross, but not incest. I am sure it is a tad strange the first time around but you get over it VERY quickly.

@Hannah haha I remember my friend pointing that out to me, how all she did was lay in bed all day on the show

PuggleWug said...

Katie, until you grow a penis and become a husband and father, you have no idea what they think.

Women give birth. It's not pretty, but it happens daily. Get over it. Female mammals have mammary glands for a reason, to provide food for their offspring. There is nothing sexual or gross about it.

Katie, whether you choose to give birth or not, you too will develop saggy breasts one day.

This woman should not be around children of any age, or adults with a brain either. She clearly doesn't understand what the various parts of the human body are for, and her grasp of what constitutes incest is frightening.

@Katie Cunningham, anecdotal evidence from guys who tell you their stories in bars?

"I have had one too many men complain to me in bars about their lives and their wives after children that I am skeptical as to how happy the majority of parents are-esp after studies confirm it makes you less happy!"

Maybe half-drunk bitter divorced men in bars should not be your only source of information on the subject of fatherhood and spousal intimacy.

curlyhairslacker said...

Where is the Count? I'd love to hear his thoughts!

Karrots said...

3 months pregnant here and can't wait to bond with my baby in the way that only breastfeeding provides.

Katie - I only hope that one day you find a man who finds you desirable regardless of your tits or body, because any guy that only wants you for that is not even worth your time. You can't stay young forever.

Katie Cunningham said...

I know this may come as a shock to the breast feeding nazi's but people CAN have an opinion, and lifestyle, different from yours. I can think it is gross, and I am not alone in that. The problem is when you give a crap who does what and force that opinion on people. People want to breast feed? Good for them. They don't because they personally think it is gross? Who cares. Thinking of is as incest is completely wacky though.

And puggle, I said exactly that, it's not something you understand until you do it. Because since humans are still here, people get over it. Because they have to!

And yes, we all will have them one day, for many, childbearing makes that day come a little faster. And I don't think I should have to see it, especially since we have a breast feeding room here at work!

LottaColada said...

Congrats Karrots!

Katie Cunningham said...

@Boxes- they weren't divorced-I think that was the problem! Between work and just hearing men complain in numerous different places-yes, I certainly wonder about the state of marriage these days. There are good men, and I have seen article written by men who say they would never bad-talk their wife, even if it is ALL their friends do.

Karrots-I actually do have that man. I am saying in my own head, it is hard to wrap it around who would still want to sleep with me after all that! Thats all. I saw the miracle of life. Among other battle scars. That is what love is anyway. Not caring.

I'm 32 weeks with my first, and have planned and do still plan on breast feeding. That being said, and sorry if TMI, in the last few days I've started leaking ( for lack of a better word) milk/colostrum and honestly, it DID creep me out some and it's really fucking weird. I sorta feel like I'm relinquishing control over my basic bodily functions to this baby I have yet to even meet!
But, that being said, the human body is a fascinating thing, yadda yadda, and I still plan to breast feed. Just my 2 cents.

@Hannah, that's what I was going to mention too. This is coming from a moronic twit who was too lazy to get out of bed before 3 in the afternoon to be a mother to her own children! This stupid waste knows as much about mothering and caring for infants as she does about rocket science. I cannot stand people who shift on breastfeeding or try to sexualize it when it's the people who sexualized it who actually have a problem!!!!

yodelay said...

*shit*

Katie Cunningham said...

@Karrots

I think it was implied that you think breastfeeding is somehow necessary to bonding with your child and that people that don't/can't are somehow missing out. That being said, I doubt you actually think that.

Realize that society does put quoite a lot of pressure on women to do it the "right" way and if they don't are often attacked. This is probably especially hurtful to women who can't or have adopted.

mizzoutiger76 said...

You're right, I'm sorry....It's clearly a hot topic for me personally, I get extremely defensive because there are a lot of moms out there, including me, that wish they could have but can't for some reason (psychologically and/or physically) and I just don't want people thinking we can't also bond with our children.

My apologies. And congrats!

BostonGirl said...

Absolutely not and for her toget say something like that is just beyond insane. It is sad to me that she has such a distorted view regarding her own body. It also makes me wonder what happened to her when she was just a young girl bc I know as a child my mom explained to me that breasts were for feeding a baby and I remember watching her feed my siblings and there was NOTHING sexual about it.

BostonGirl said...

Agreed and u said it perfectly

Karrots said...

I never said it was necessary to bond with your child, just that it provides a different kind of bond (hormonal, your body releases oxytocin while breastfeeding which promotes nurture and relaxtion). Different. Not better or worse. Different.

Not to mention you burn a shit load of calories and helps shed baby weight- which may or may not make me love that child even more. I'll find out.

Leah said...

My younger son is living proof that breastfeeding can save lives.

Every other kid who shares or shared his genetic syndrome was tube fed. Of those who have survived, some continue to be tube fed to this day. And my son is doing worlds better than those tube-fed kids - physically and mentally.

So yeah, think it's gross all you like, but my kid may not be here today or walking, sitting, holding conversations, etc., if I hadn't been so dedicated to nursing him.

There was a shitload of dumbasses who thought kids with disabilites shouldn't be nursed. So not only did I have to be dedicated to doing it for him, I had to fight assholes who didn't want me to do it. Thank God my husband and our pediatricians were there to back me up.

FYI, my husband still thinks my boobs are gorgeous, and cops a feel whenever he can - which is pretty damn often.

Nellie said...

I was totally weirder out by it and embarrassed too. And then you are holding your baby and trying to feed him and that all just poof. Gone. And it's something I honestly worried about. I wanted to breast fed but was worried I would be grossed out by my body. Very happy to resort that its awesome! The first but can be really rough but hang in there. It is so worth it. Sorry for typos.

Ditto. It's good for the baby and the milk is super nutritious, but's still juice squeezed from a person!

SoggyCrunch said...

The reason we have breasts is to feed our babies. They are not meant for pleasure. That's just an added bonus.

If you don't have kids and think it's gross, I get that. A lot changes once you have a kid. I figured I'd breastfeed until a year and call it quits, but I breastfed my first until 18 months (and regret quitting so early) and now I have a 2 1/2 year old who is still nursing.

We believe in full term nursing here. :)

SoggyCrunch said...

Also, the average age a child weans worldwide is 5 or 6.

@KatieCunningham: You have just put everyone on this site at ease by stating you have no plans of procreating. Thank you for not further tainting the planet.

Breastfeeding is only creepy to me when the kid is old enough to walk over, grab mom's boob and ask for lunch. First 6months to a year, no problem. Helps suck the baby weight out of a broad.

Hey, as a breastfed child I thank my Mom for the benefits it provides. I just never appreciated her pointy to her droopy, tube sock boobies and saying it was my fault!
I would never go so far as to say its gross...but it does freak me out to see another woman breast feeding because it seems like such a special, intimate thing to me.

Having said that, there are MANY men who find pregnant and lactating women extremely sexy. Come on, women don't buy huge ta-tas just to please themselves. I think pregnant women are the ultimate level of femininity to some men.

As a former NICU Nurse, I have to add my two cents.

I've taught tons of moms to breastfeed over the years and I've taught parents to feed from a bottle too. Not every baby will latch on to a boob or a bottle nipple!

I support whatever choice a mom makes. Sometimes there are things outside of her control, (social/medical issues or a premature child) and she can't breastfeed--these moms are often made to feel like failures.

However you are able to give nutrition to your baby and make sure they are well hydrated during the early days of bilirubinemia, you are succeeding as a mom.

Parenthood means unexpected events and adapting to them...don't feel like a failure if you can't breastfeed or if it is not right for you. (Relax if your birth plan takes a 180, as long as that baby is delivered healthy and not deprived of oxygen, it's a win.)

We shouldn't bash other women for having different views and circumstances that effect their choice of feeding. (You can't imagine the heartache of a mom with a premie having her milk dry up because she is sleep deprived or stressed out, or worse, have inverted nipples and a baby that won't latch.)

Yes, peer reviewed research shows breastfeeding is slightly superior, but there are also wonderful formulas out there too. I've seen too many new moms feel like epic losers for not breastfeeding. The more they stress, the harder it is to make it happen.

My mom didn't breastfeed me, that doesn't mean she didn't love me any less, it wasn't her thing and in vogue when I was born.

I lost my pregnancy and it won't happen again. I'd be so grateful to have a healthy child, and have a choice. Be kind to yourselves and eachother!

Kara said...

Grosses me out too!!! I don't have kids. One of the reasons I don't is the extreme amount of control society/the law exerts over women with children. I know it's better if they are breast fed, but I wasn't and I'm not a mutant. And just because I think it's gross doesn't mean I judge. The incest part is just weird.

I handle cases where people's (women's) choice of prenatal care, habits, breast feeding or not is used to take their children away and involve them in the legal system. People, normal ones, sometimes are grossed out by breast feeding people. It only became such a big deal to breast feed your baby in the last 30 years or so - before that formula was god. And before that, rich people had wetnurses.

Oh - and for those of you saying people that get grossed out by it have issues but still breast feeding when the baby has teeth or can talk? Hypocrits much?

YoMismo-RememberKermitGosnell said...

I'm a straight guy.

Watching breastfeeding is rather unpleasant, probably even gross.

I know it's natural and good for the child's health, but pooping or jacking off is also natural and good for the person doing it, but it's no nice show for anybody else, except obviously, a minority of people whose hobbies we are not able to judge.

@Count Jerkula- You actually have no idea what I may or may not do in regards to procreation. Bwahahaha. Actually, I don't think stating that everyone can have their own opinion is all that crazy or revolutionary. For some people here, its your way or the high way in terms of opinions! People who get so riled up about it seem like they are trying to compensate for some sort of insecurity. Frankly, I would think most of you here do exactly what is right for both you, your husband/wife, and your child. The choice should be owned no matter which it is.

I would also think that there are many women who think breastfeeding is gross who make excellent mothers. Women can't win no matter what their choice.

It's gross to see people doing it in public with their tits all hanging out. We aren't animals, have some decorum. Not saying you shouldn't feed your kid if they're hungry but at least put a blanket over them. And I say this as the mother of 2, one of which I am breastfeeding now. Also, I was totally grossed out by the idea before I had kids, but once you have kids you want the best for them so you do whatever you think that would be....which is breastfeeding. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I'm not outraged or offended by hers. Why do different opinions bother people so much, especially those who claim to be progressive and tolerant and accepting?

I grew up in a time where women breast fed in public and people didn't sexualize it or giggle like pre-teens at "boobies!". I find it beyond bizarre that adults have a problem with it because is the most natural thing in the world. Grow. The. Feck. Up!

TITS were created for the sole purpose to be sucked on. Deal with it!

Katie- I have a question? If you think breastfeeding is gross, what about drinking milk from other animals? Is that better/ok? I'm just curious.

According to Shana's theory, would that be a form of beastiality? Kids out milking the cow/goat? Is that child abuse?

C. Cascante said...

Thank god my ancestors breastfed my ancestors or I wouldn't be here to read this.

I found breastfeeding my children to be a very empowering act. To be able to total provide my children with all the nutrients they needed without spending extra money and giving huge companies even more profit. Also, formula, when I was breastfeeding 20 years ago, was not nearly as good as mother's milk.

I breastfed for about 2 years but started tapering off when they began eating solids. By 15 months it was only in the morning and the evening, so it was mainly at home. Yes, I used a blanket and when necessary, for example a formal event, I would use a bottle of breast milk.

In the end the the best way to feed a baby is not so much the method as doing it with love.

Not in a bathroom, but just right there in the mall or wherever. They seem like they're daring you to say something. I just think it's a little, i don't know, unseemly. they make all kinds of blankets and ponchos and special shirts for that sort of thing.

Gaining and losing weight can do that too. And some of us more well endowed women naturally hang a little lower. God forbid there are women out there with less than perfect breasts, though, right? Pretty sure most women are self concious to begin with, critiquing their body just makes it that much worse. Especially when it's something someone can't control. Like breasts or stretch marks or flat behinds etc.

Huge pet peeve of mine. It's like being "unattractive", without surgery, you can not control the way something looks.

As for the lady who went on a spiel about how undesirable women must be after birth? Nice stereotype. I still rock a bikini as well as I did before, no signs of having carried a baby and my breasts are probably perkier than yours. In fact, the same applies to many of my friends - there are plenty of hot mamas around and you would be extremely surprised at how well the body bounces back.

I know a lot of women who feel the same way as this idiot does. Breastfeeding is natural and best for baby and if you're able to do it, fantastic. If you're not, don't shame yourself on a daily basis. There's nothing wrong with formula if breastmilk isn't working for you. I had one person tell me to my face that I shouldn't be nursing my child. I was in the park with my other kids, the baby got hungry, and I had a nursing cover-up on and made sure I wasn't exposing anything to anyone. I was so offended, I stopped taking my kids to that park.

Puggle, great riposte. Gravity gets us all in the end whether one has babies or not, and whether one is fat or not.

Female mammals have breasts to feed their offspring. It's not gross, it's biology. Only an idiot thinks they're strictly sex toys. Personally, I think cutting up one's breasts and stuffing them full of silicone to make them "sexier" is far grosser than the sight of any mother breastfeeding her child.
