Stephen Colbert Cancels Show To Be With His Mom

You get so used to turning on the Colbert Report every night and when it is suddenly not there you wonder what happened. Beginning two nights ago, new episodes of the show were replaced with repeats and a message from the network saying there were unforeseen circumstances which turns out to be Stephen's 91 year old mother. They have been really close since a plane crash took the life of his father and two of his siblings and it is a huge family and she is the matriarch and she is apparently not doing very well. Stephen is supposed to come back at some point next week, but no one knows for sure.

Good for him, having final moments with family is more important than any tv show.

That is an amazing son, not to let the trappings of this business keep him away from his familial responsibilities, God bless him!

I just lost my mom last week, so I can sympathize with him :( Losing a parent is tough. Stephen Colbert has his priorities straight.

I'm so sorry @MissJenny!

I'm sorry to hear about Stephen's mom as well, and consider him a really good guy.

MissJenny, sorry to hear that. I lost my mom last October, and yes, losing a parent is tough. Hugs to MissJ and positive thoughts to the Colbert family.

I'd heard he was a good family man. Good job Stephen--that's how to live a life without regrets.

I adore Stephen Colbert. My most treasured possession -- well, other than family things, of course -- is the picture of myself with him. He is a class-act, through and through. Many prayers for his mother and his family.

He is doing the right thing. And to all who have lost your moms, my sympathies. I lost mine 20 years ago, and it still hurts. Best wishes to whole Colbert family.

My condolences, Jenny.

I lost my dad in 2003 and my mom had double bypass this year. It's hard to be an adult sometimes.

Good on Colbert for doing the right thing.

"puts his show on hiatus" might have been a better headline.

From what I've heard, he is exactly the opposite of the character he portrays on TV. He is very humble, very modest, absolutely devoted to his family, a progressive Catholic, and he absolutely will not let his children watch his show because he does not want them to be confused by the guy on TV that they don't know. I wish his family all the love and strength they need during this time.

Jeez, FS, I didn't think it was possible to love him more. :D

Thanks for posting this! I was wondering what was up, my morning routine after my little one goes back to sleep in Daily Show then Colbert. Hoping for the best for him and his family.

I just spent 2 days in the hospital sitting with my brother. He got sick because where they took polyps from his colon burst open. I told work to forget my being there while he was so ill and getting transfusions. His blood pressure bottomed out and he frightened me witless. Family comes before money.

@Missjenny619, Losing a parent is very tough, so sorry to hear about the loss of your mom.

Colbert is a class act, doing the right thing for all the right reasons. Sending good thoughts to him and his family.

I'll just piggyback on all of Del Riser's comments above.
