Forget the music -- He gave us the Cindi Garvey drama!
ReplyDeleteAnd music, too.
ReplyDeleteSad....
ReplyDeleteHelp me out, Barton, I'm too young to remember (hee hee) - Cyndy left Steve for Marvin? But then she claimed Steve "gave" her to Marvin? Awesome '80's drama!
ReplyDeleteRIP. That's quite a story about Steve Harvey. Sounds like Marvin sat down with him and had a talk regarding Cindy and Steve agreed to the divorce. Seems too young to die but that pic doesn't look like he was in the best of health. Marvin had quite an amazing career. And it seems he was also a decent man.
ReplyDeleteI grew up listening to the soundtrack from The Sting. Every time I watch that movie, I think of him. I'm surprised and sorry that he's gone.

ReplyDeleteI'm sure it's just a typo, but I just laughed out loud (doing the sign of the cross) at you typing Steve Harvey instead of Steve Garvey. I just read an archived People article that Cyndy found out about an onging affair between Steve and his secretary and that's what ultimately broke up the marriage. I am surprised I hadn't heard the juicy stuff, because SG played for the Padres and I had my inside source. Maybe I was too young at the time

DeleteSunny - I hate this iPhone! I looked at the Wiki page for SG. The personal part had all the gory details. True man whore stuff. Those poor women! And he's still alive.
DeleteOh goodness. I think I'm being disrespectful. RIP Mr Hamlisch and I'm so sorry to his family for his early passing :(
ReplyDeleteI love the shout-out that he gets at the end of Role Models and how McLovin points out that some say he looks like a young Marvin Hamlisch (he really does!)
ReplyDeleteSteve Garvey was a piece of work.
ReplyDeleteRIP Marvin.

@Agent
ReplyDeleteEwwwwwwwwww. My sis and I used to get a creepy vibe from SG, but we joked it was because of his perfectly coiffed hair!
Everyone always denied that it took place, except for Cindy. Or Cindi. Cyndy. Strippername spelling. I was always blown away by the fact that Steve Garvey and Marvin Hamlisch were going after the same woman. I mean, wow.
ReplyDeleteHe visited the pediatric hospital I worked at and did a sort of "concert" for the kids. He sang and played the piano and would pick out obviously sick kids from the audience, ask their names and then make up a song about them. Since so many of our kids were there for weeks, everyone knew them and he was amazingly spot-on about them. Had the audience in stitches, he was so funny.
ReplyDeleteWonderful story thank you so much for sharing it.
DeleteLovely story, @Susan B. Thank you
ReplyDeleteSusan, that's the best story. Any person who'd do that is a standup guy. That story in and of itself would make a touching obituary for anyone, whether they're a world renowned composer or just the guy who plays the piano at the mall food court.
ReplyDeleteBarton, why is that stripper name spelling? Cyndy is the nickname for CYNthia. Why most change the CYN to CINdy has always bugged me. Obviously I have a close attachment to the name. ;)
ReplyDeleteJust a week ago while on vacation I saw him interviewed on a local San Diego channel and I didn't realize he was the conductor for the San Diego symphony. He played The Way We Were beautifully on the piano.
If I remember correctly Steve Garvey cheated on Cyndy, then she fell for Marvin who wasn't into a lasting relationship, and she went psycho on his ass.
Well, my spellcheck sure disapproves. Stormy, Cyndy, Chyna, Tammilynne, Jesika, Breezy, Candi -- I suspect I just came away from her publicity blitz years ago with a negative attitude toward her, hence the strippernamespelling smear. I should be more careful with my bad jokes -- there's always collateral damage!
ReplyDeleteI was sad to hear this. He was also the guest pops director for the Milwaukee Symphony. I got to see him in person once (American Idol was here with Danny Gokey) but I never saw him conduct. :-(
ReplyDeletePlaying his Solace from The Sting is one of my favorite songs to play.
I was privileged to have been a member of a choir directed by him at a 4th of July concert at Ravinia (outdoor Chicago area venue). Nice man, great director. Loved his music. RIP.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness--I've been at work and am just finding this out. I can't believe he's gone.
ReplyDeleteLoved his music and he always seemed to be such a nice person.
RIP Marvin.
I used to work with a woman who was married to Cyndy Garvey's brother. She told me Cyndy was straight-up batshit cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.
ReplyDeleteAs for Marvin, RIP. Seems like we are losing some major talents lately, so sad.
I worked with him on a project for work (he was the composer on a play produced at a theater I worked at - strangely, Nora Ephron was the playwright on that show, and she just died...it was "Imaginary Friends." Terrible show...) Anyway, he was a LOVELY, LOVELY person. He was very sweet, sort of shy. Very sad to hear this. He was so nice. So was Nora. Nora was outrageously kind and helpful to me, as well.
