Oscar Pistorius Beat His Girlfriend Before Shooting Her

Each day, more information comes out about South African runner Oscar Pistorius and the final moments of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp's life. She has a reality show which aired this weekend despite her death. Reeva had also been scheduled to speak at a domestic violence event the day after she was killed. The news which affected me the most this weekend was that Oscar had taken a cricket bat and smashed in Reeva's skull before shooting her. Also, his first call after killing her was to a friend admitting the crime although he tried to tell police he thought she had been a burglar. You know there are going to be other women that come forward about this guy because you don't go from no temper to doing something this horrific for your first time.

Unknown said...: It sounds from the article like every person interviewed has a different version of events, he called his dad at 20 past, he came then the paramedics, he called his friend at 50 past, he came but there was no police, police and paramedics arrived at the same time, when polic got there paramedics were trying I resuscitate her, he shot her 4 times in the head and body through a door (that's a sticking point for me, physically doesn't make any sense, you get shot in the head once you're likely not going to remain standing). I think these details are largely gossip and conjecture and it will be very interesting to see how it all plays out once the police are allowed to speak. On the other hand, I know he comes from a wealthy family, how's the bribery situation in S.A.? From what I heard of goings-on during the World Cup that area is a mess, will be interesting to see how that aspect goes as well; 7:51 AM

I think we are way past due on some capital punishment sentences for killing women and children. This just can't continue and the message needs to be loud and clear in every country. This is not acceptable behavior and we will put down the scumbags that pollute our societies. Same goes for child abusers and rapists. I've had it with these fools.

DewieTheBear said...: There's conflicting information over how her head injury happened, and one can't assert that he beat her with the cricket bat. Another theory has him chasing her after the initial shot; she fled into the bathroom, tripped and hit her head on the toilet, causing the skull injury and leaving her helpless to the final three shots.

In other words, the police have not established (or shared publicly) exactly what happened yet aside from the charge of premeditated murder. That's really all we know. How it unfolded will be revealed by police and prosecutors in time.

For a site ostensibly run by an attorney, the legal nuances in posts here are utter shit. While many readers will seek out other sites for clarification, others won't, so please, an attempt at accuracy please.; 8:17 AM
Unknown said...: The problem with that is the accidentally convicted. I knew a girl who said her step brother raped her so she could live with her mom rather than her dad. After the boy was arrested, news all over the place, her step mom said under no circumstances would she ever be allowed back in their home the girl recanted because she got what she wanted. I have seen women do horribly vile things and then hide away from recourse "because I'm a woman" so they provoke and attack while being secure in the idea that they won't have to feel the repercussions due to their genital configuration. If women truly want equality then punishment for crimes against them should really be the same. Although I presume you don't mean your typical bar fight so much as you mean systematic poor treatment by certain individuals or cultures. To commit that level of violence, especially to someone you are involved with, is just so uncharacteristic. It sounds like 'roid rage' to me, or some sort of blackout. It's no excuse, though, and likely no defense either.

I hope they did a toxicology test on him when they arrested him. I would be really interested to know what would show up. What a sad irony that she was involved with a Domestic Violence project.

I can't stop thinking about the initial reports saying "a Valentine's Day surprise gone terribly wrong", though. It will be really interesting to see what comes out in the trial.; 9:06 AM

Pip said...: Digal, this just happened. I loathe Chris Brown. With that being said, this POS deserves to rot in prison. Brown does not.

I do believe in rehabilitation. Brown seems to physically assault first, it is his go to. I truly think if he let go of his ego, got a therapist, and got to the root of why he does what he does, he could make strides in becoming a better person. It is such a waste to see the things Brown does, he is young, and extremely talented. I don't see it in the near future, but I do hope he gets the help he needs.

In this case, we see a young and talented man as well. It seems he has a history with this sort of thing. He is now in the worst case scenario, and has only himself to blame. As much as I snark on Brown, I would hate to see him down this path.; 10:10 AM

*There was no evidence of forced entry at the home.
*There were indications Reeva Steenkamp intended to stay the night at the house. She had an overnight bag and her iPad.
*There was evidence of heavy drinking.
*Reeva was shot four times through the bathroom door.
*Detectives are working to determine whether a bloodied cricket bat found on the scene was used to attack Steenkamp, or if she used it in self-defense, or if Pistorius used the bat to break down the bathroom door.
*Steroid drugs were found at Pistorius’s home. Police have ordered his blood to be tested.; 10:31 AM

It is a sex-based hate crime against women because they are female. That's what it is, truly. The global patriarchy that runs EVERYTHING (governments, police, courts, military industrial complex, etc, etc.) is why men don't get punished NEARLY as severely as they should be.

Saying "well some women abuse men, too" is a massive derail. Those cases are in the minority, they are statistical outliers.

However I would like to posit that there are more cases of men being abused not being documented due to men being embarrassed to admit actually happening. True and sadly so, it skews with more men abusing women but more women abusing men cases occur that siimply do not show in comparison...

I don't know what happened that night but as someone who's then-husband tried tto kill her, I can assure you that I am NOT defending Oscar Pistorius. But I do want the TRUTH to come out and overseas blogs and newspapers reporting speculation and rumour is bad journalism and irresponsible. The case has not even begun. All we know for sure is that she was shot and killed. Do I think something bad, like domestic violence went down? Actually, i do. And for whatever reason, he/they are especially prone to doing that when the topic involves any sort of abuse (draw your own conclusions about that).

Kerrimoo said...: OK, I could barely tear myself away from the news coverage today and unless forensics proves otherwise, I believe Oscar (because I desperately want to, in my heart of hearts). In terms of not calling the paramedics right away - nobody knows what they would do in such a panicky situation. When my daughter stopped breathing at home, I was in such a state I didn't know whether to call for help or start CPR (which, in spite of training, I completely forgot how to perform correctly). Oh, and we don't have an easy 911 number to remember - I called 10111, they said they couldn't help, gave me another number, they said to call another number for a private ambulance ... fucking horrible.; 6:31 AM
