In case you don't post a comment, and only read the comments, you might not have seen the message that all people posting comments will start seeing today. I wanted to share it with you too.
In the next week, I will be deciding whether to go to a system which will involve the approval of all comments prior to being posted. I do not want to have to resort to this option, but will, and hopefully would only have to do so for a short time before returning to the system that exists now.
Many sites do not allow any comments at all, and that would be a much easier option, but I love and value the comments and won't ever resort to that. If the problem does not resolve itself, then I will just review all the comments before they are posted so that this can continue to be the vibrant community it has always been.

I didn't mean to offend you at all; as I said, I like you and I think you bring good things to the board! I only brought your name up as an example of people who were being attacked, and of course I agree you did nothing wrong when handling it. They're still trolls, and obviously you weren't the only one trying to shoo them off.
My comment was directed to the board as a whole, and definitely not just you. I'm sorry if you felt singled out as it was never my intention, and I'm genuinely surprised you perceived it as such.
I agree as well, but would like to add as far as the "inside" items...I too once was a long time lurker, and I really enjoy reading the blinds as well as the comments, and then you realize there is a community here and even though you may have only lurked, you are a part of it. Heck, my screen name is based directly off a thread where one of the trolls was threatening to expose IP addresses or some such thing. a2a, as in reference to Lilo and how she makes her money these days is a relatively new term here and was dare I say appropriate use at the moment, but has now been overused. I still do not know what "NOT NOW IRONMAN" means but I suppose what I'm trying to say is if you enjoy this community, don't be afraid to be a courteous and respectful snarky part of it. I'd hate to see the comments go away, and I'd really hate to see them monitored as that means less articles. Light and love to all and as always...WHERE IS SHELLY?

The favorites get away with murder and the disfavored get banned.

The only bummer is about monitering the comments is that it does take a while to see everyone's posts. I go on Blind Gossip now and then and all comments take a long time to see. I love the fact that here you see everyone's guesses right away. But waiting is better than the trolls.

Having been here since almost the beginning I am glad you are doing something as these trolls have been a total PIA!
I come to the site to read and I read the comments for the community. Yes there are times it is irritating as I see no reason for the A2A or the +1 stuff but I sure the h*ll am not going to pout about it or some such. Eventually it will go away as other things have throughout the years.
To see some idiot trolls come in here acting like fools and posting the most crude and obnoxious trash.
For a period of time I do hope that Enty does moderate us so as maybe the trolls will go find some other board to harass.

As someone else put it yesterday was flooding which is when a group of posters not normally associated with a forum come in as a group, and "flood" the board with posts w/the sole intention to disrupt usual activity. Which they did.
The only "point" I could ascertain being made is that they dislike Enty and have a beef with him; only rather than take it to private communication they chose to take over his public board. And insult some of the other posters in the process. Or maybe I'm overlooking some broader objective.

I've tried reading these comments to figure out what is going on and I can't. I think that I don't keep up with the comments enough. I just know that I've been around a long time and I enjoy reading most comments. Lately, I've had to scroll past a few that make me uncomfortable (sorry Count). I did enjoy this site more before the Himmmmm fiasco but as always, things change in life.
Also, someone mentioned an invitation-only message board. There is one that isn't invitation-only for off-topic discussions but it must be heavily moderated as I used to have a login and now it is invalid.

Yesterday was a nightmare. I enjoy reading the comments too but not when trolls spoil them.
@ libby - I've done political blogs before. USAToday had one - OnDeadline is the one I used to go to. But I got sick of that shizz awful fast. I'm sorry if I implied that this place is like one of those - not my intention. I was trying to say that even though you think some cliques come and go, you regulars ARE a clique too, and sometimes you do gang up on outsiders. And, honestly, sometimes it's warranted because someone is acting like an asshole, but sometimes it's just because they have a different opinion that the group doesn't agree with. And from an outsiders point-of-view, those times it looks like a pack mentality takes over and people get mean and gang up on the lone wolf.
I like to think that my comments are honest and true to who I am, too, but honestly, I leave out alot because I don't want to get personally attacked for having a different opinion, and then just disregarded as the "Chris Brown troll" , for example, whenever I post any other time. That does happen - THAT is the hypocrisy I mentioned. Everyone wants people to be themselves, but really, as long as you think, joke, and go along with us, otherwise there's no place for you here. Whether you don't think it's like that it not, I'm trying to tell you that it is.
I just mentioned how long I've been lurking & commenting not to imply that I've been here so long that I know everything going on. I mentioned it because I wanted to put it out there that I'm not basing my opinion on just the last few months.

Censorship & Freedom of Speech
I get that the ability to speak your mind at any given time, when and where you feel like it is an American freedom we all are grateful for and appreciate a lot because we all know that many countries do not have that luxury. However, IMO those words get thrown about a lot and it makes me hot under the collar.
To me...going back to its origin....FREEDOM OF SPEECH applies to the ability to DISAGREE with others (more often than not... "the rule makers") about their policies, beliefs, sometimes crazy rules and NOT be hung, tortured, ridiculed for it...plain and simple. To me...it does not mean you get to walk into an establishment (cyber or public) and get to express your every inner thought you are having at any given moment.
If you were at restaurant and there was a person/s who showed up (drunk or not) and started just spewing loud, racist, pornographic, obnoxious, comments in the middle of the room would you expect the manager to throw them out? I would! I don't want to sit there and listen to this person while I'm enjoying he company of my friends.
CENSORSHIP is ELIMINATING (by whatever means) what somebody is saying BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE IT OR AGREE WITH IT and are afraid that this person or group of people speaking and getting their word out will affect public's opinion against what you or your group believe.
IMO, Enty is only trying to make his "gathering" enjoyable by eliminating those who are spewing vile words and racist comments to allow those of us here comfortable to talk amongst ourselves and have a good relaxed time.
I, for one, want to be here.... where I can feel comfortable at a "party" with a variety of people from all walks of life with MANY different points of view and beliefs and that's what it has always been.
Enty has the right to do with his guests whatever he pleases and he seems to have always been cool with anyone who shows up... as long as they don't start vocalizing pornographic, racist, vile things that I think we can all agree fall on the negative side of the fence. And btw... it's really really hard to offend me!!! (Cuz my fave shows are Family Guy, Tosh.O and Breaking Bad and the occasional porn (yes I'm a girl aaaand I smoke pot on occasion!)). So I read all day yesterday and hardly got offended but I was like...you know this is kinda funny but I really like to go back to having a good relaxing time.
Sorry for the long post but the slippery slope and censorship thing gets me steamed...especially when people want to say that it means everyone has the right to say whatever they want, whenever they want, where ever they want and everyone else should stand there and take it. That's not freedom of speech!!! For some, that's an easy route to abuse and make no mistake, they know it on either a conscious (or don't on the subconscious) but it's a form of abuse to make others feel bad in one way or another.
btw...I consistently had a vision in my head of yesterday's scene and it was the scene from Weird Science when at the party Lisa made all the Mad Max people show up to make the boys look like heroes :)

So I am stoopid because I thought +1 meant I agree with everything you just said. I will never do that again. And as much as it amuses me to poke the trolls with sticks I too like the comraderie and hope the comments get back on track.
I have a question about libby. Are you a moderator? Do you have some sort of title "behind the curtain" (Thanks for that Affleck 7, er uh, lutefisk)? I only ask because just because you've read the site for a long time doesn't mean that you're able to dictate what you feel is apropos for the site.
Yes there were "trolls" yesterday, but the site was also waaay busier than I've seen it in months and had at least 3 times more comments. Whether or not the site was secretly sold (it totes was) clicks equal money which can be used to buy bacon, so everyone should be happy.
Libby, if you can't take people making fun of the fact that your picture is nothing but your armpit, maybe grow a thicker skin or change your picture. :)

@Jerkula, I did not click on a post about your personal porn preferences. As you seem well aware, there are other sites specializing in hosting those thoughts - xvideos, xhamster, Fetlife. Whatever post I clicked on, the conversation that you were involved in had far strayed from the subject of the post. Although I don't remember what post it was, the closest to porn it would have been was something about Farrah Abraham. Somehow the comment threads were, of course, a rehashing of A2A and you linking to your favorite clips.
I don't care if you want to watch women squirting; talk all you want about that on Fetlife, on xvideos, etc., where it is appropriate for the forum. It's not that difficult to understand why others take umbrage at the comments being cluttered up with your endless personal verbal vomit on what turns you on and off when the topic at hand is celebrities and mindless gossip.

@wahoowifey, freedom of speech relates to the government's attempt to regulate it. Even then, it is not absolute; notable exceptions include libel and slander.
A moderated comment section on a private internet site is not a freedom of speech issue.

People are pointing fingers at Libby and Anna? I tried to look up some of the trolls yesterday. I think a majority were recently made. The Affleck one was made years ago. It had the same profile number as Lutefisk. The accusations towards those two need to stop.

IKNOWRIGHT? Did you look me up? I am one of the original stakeholders! I didn't see one dime when the site was sold, AND I EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT CLICKING ON THAT DONATE BUTTON (It's the thought that counts, right?). Enty has moved on. He's moved out of his cubicle at the Probate Law Firm, and is drawing up Wills in the comfort of an office. He might get a mini-fridge next month. If you're thinking of dying, think of Enty!
An approval system will require someone to sit there all day approving postings or the site will be horribly backed up.
What would be better is two solutions: for article reactions, add an automated up/down vote. If a posting gets enough down votes it is removed. Yahoo and YouTube do this.
Second, Enty, create a goddamn message board for us. That way we can talk among ourselves about off topic stuff. That will stop people from hijacking threads about their own personal lives, etc. A discussion board will let us do that.

I'd actually stopped commenting due to the ridiculous amount of trolling. It will be fun to get back to talking smack about celebs.
I haven't commented in a while and usually use the weekends to get caught up, what a day yesterday ! I agree with what someone said earlier, there are only so many times you can guess 'lindsay' in an 'easy, easy' blind and I appreciate the OT conversations. What I don't appreciate is someone who has supposedly 'been here longer' making me or anyone else feel stupid for having those conversations. And I find the casual use of the word 'retard' much more offensive than anything the Count has to say.
I wholly welcome some form of moderation on this site given yesterday's chaos. Albeit, some of the trolls had their moments of entertainment, but most of the time it was fucktards behind a keyboard seeking some form of unknown vengeance against Enty.
I don't personally have an issue with the regulars and their witty (okay maybe even depraved) batter but then again I'm not easily offended and employ a pretty twisted sense of humor in real life. I don't think Dragon or the Count are problematic. The Count doesn't necessarily have a filter about things but after reading his comments enough, I find they're pretty tongue in cheek and sarcastic more than anything else. The regular ladies on here joke around but they seem pretty receptive to new folks and I've seen them greet newbies often enough.
But by all means, find some filter or perhaps a means to report certain commenters. I would hate for the banter on here to be minimalized due to an approval process but at the same time, anything has to be better than yesterday!

I loathe the thought of an "inner circle" (high school much?) but you make a very good point. If you want to be part of the group, be part of the group!
On the flip side of that, people who already are "part of the group" or "inner circle" or whatever need to be welcoming to newbies. One instance that comes to mind is Marieee, who spammed an anti-Emma Watson blog the first couple of times she posted. She got (and continues to get) crap for it, but she sticks around and even makes self-deprecating jokes about it. If Marieee sticks around and doesn't let it get to her, six months from now it will be a joke among friends, like ribbing your college roommate for being the first one to puke at the party. That's a terrible example but all I have right now. Point is, stop acting like you own the comments or you're more entitled to participate than Cora Minora who posted for the first time yesterday.

The writing style from her occasional outbursts are both on topic and worded virtually identically. Having said that I don't think she instigated yesterday, I think she saw a bandwagon and hopped right on. @lola--It depends on whether or not the moderators are worth a damn. And to be honest, who's to say that Enty wouldn't have the same problem? My experience is that multiple mods generally tend to be quite a bit more reasonable, since it's not entirely on them.

I was thinking of giving up on reading the comments on CDAN before the shitstorm yesterday! This is all keeping it more interesting than it's been in a loooong while. Sure, I found a lot of it annoying and juvenile, but as I said yesterday, I found it NO MORE ANNOYING than all the off-topic, overly personal verbal diarrhea from many of the usual posters who, in my opinion, clearly need to develop relationships with living, breathing people--friends, family, therapists, NOT pseudonyms on a gossip site. I come on here for mindless entertainment, not because I am craving a "community" of faux friends--self-aggrandizing hypocrites who will viciously attack certain posters for comments they deem offensive. I come here for silly gossip and fun banter about stupid celebrities. I think moderating the comments here will take away everything that is so great about CDAN, which is the quick flow to the comments. Who has time to post a comment and then wait around for it to approved and then wait longer to see if anybody agrees or disagrees with you?! Just sift through the bullshit, read what you want to read, and ignore the rest!

Jesus Christ lads, the site has plunged into my ward. I come here after my shift sometimes to read the posts. I lurk everyday but my posts have been very few, reasons are 2 fold. The time difference and the fact very few people say hello. There are plenty of people being referred to as "newbies", which is funny as they are probably lurking a long long time and find when they post they are just ignored.

Enty I have a suggestion. How about an ignore button for user names. We had this option on a game forum that I used to play obsessively. When the trolls would start, you could just ignore them by clicking on their names. Was very easy.

I thought a lot of the comments were funny. I don't knowanyone in person and sure wouldn't want anyone to come to any harm. It is apparent that for a majority of the time there were primary people that responded to almost every post. Nothing wrong with that. I have tried to contribute thoughtful commentary eespecially regarding mental health, simply because that's my field.
last year I was critisized for ssomething I said - and Libby was apparently seen as the expert in MH. Qualification? She has MH issues. I don't diss her or anyone for that. I know how much of a struggle it can be. First- I found yesterday quite entertaining. I didn't participate, but found over 100 comments proof that the hornet's nest was stirred up (to the point of bringing HIMMMM out of hiding).
I adore many of the comments on this site and reading about the off topic items going on in people's lives. I hold warm fuzzies for particular names like auntliddy (huggles to you), Rocket Queen, Libby, Steampunk, Sherry, Mango, Anna, surfer, JBE, Dia, etc. I may not always agree with their point of view but I enjoy seeing their comments and hold affection for these cyber characters.
I don't hold harsh feelings for those who comment on things different from my own perspective. I learn from people who see things opposite from my own standpoint, plain and simple. They enlighten me. For this I thank those like curious and 888 for teaching me to see a different angle/viewpoint. To be robbed of their comments I would feel saddened, for it is a loss of an opportunity to understand what the opposite side of the fence feels and thinks. Through this education, I learn deeper empathy and compassion.
As for canopenner....through your comments I see humour and thank you for the laughter. A day touched with dark humour is still a day with comedy. Laughter always enriches the soul.
But, I must say this final point out to you, Count....I adore your comments most of all. I think your the only true, red-blooded male on this board. Mooshki has been here from the beginning as she told us time and time and time again, so I'm just following her lead and playing the game by her rules.
will be signing off soon, but wanted to comment one last thing: I'm gathering from what I've been reading that in the past, Enty (or the blogmaster/s) gave moderating privs to certain members of this very board? as in, regular CDAN posters.
Is this true? If so it's a VERY bad idea. And I say that with no prejudice to whomever was assigned mod privs. It's NEVER a good idea to hand the asylum keys to the inmates. (and I include my myself here!) You mean to tell me that Enty let existing posters moderate their peers here. No wonder there's so much bad blood.
I hope Enty/whoever is webmaster is reading: you make plenty of dough from this site. If you must moderate, hire an outsider to do it; give him/her a list of guidelines and let them do their thing, without prejudice. Get a grad/college student looking for a reference or recommendation and pay them change, a professional between gigs, someone reliable - but someone NOT previously connected with this board. It's not that hard a job to do.
For crying out loud anything else is a clear recipe for disaster.

Again @ libby whom i think is one of the worst offenders of this "we are all about inclusion and acceptance - as long as we choose to accept you and don't decide you are a headcase" (or some other put-down) and all must endure the constant assertion that "we regulars" rule the school and no one who isn't cool can ever appreciate our lame in-jokes or get online *hugs* (really? - pathetic).
i was just someone who liked to drop in and read the damn gossip - not a daily update on the gardening, bf sleep schedules, domestic violence history, mental/physical health issues or bowel movement analysis of those sad individuals who have no life beyond their monitors and need to try to turn a gossip blog into a lord of the flies type of hierarchy complete with ridicule, clicques and banishment to those who fall prey to the pathetic mob mentality.
years ago this was a really fun place to read some blinds and part of the fun were the astute guesses ... now the blind comments, etc. has turned into a kind of lonely hearts club/chatroom with the inherent meanness that is characteristic of the insecure who demean others to justify their own sad little lives. this is not a place for meaningful relationships or true confessions ... find an appropriate mental health site for that kind of unburdening.
can CDAN please just go back to a forum to read gossip items and maybe comment and guess about them as simple escapism .. or has it totally been hijacked by some bi-polar nuts who have no other outlet for their personal problems? reaching out to strangers on a gossip blog for "support" ... go someplace where you can get the help you need and let people who want to read lighthearted, non-hard news (i.e. gossip) items and "discuss" do so without all the drama

It was generally many years ago when this was still a small blog. No one ever took advantage of it to my knowledge and honestly, the people most upset about it by and large weren't even around back then.

FWIW - the few people that HAD the ability to delete no longer do, and didn't use it when they did.
Moderation is the fastest way to kill off trolls. The troll posts are so obvious even when they are trying to pretend they hate trolls.

Your point is well taken re the moderating but I will personally be surprised if it ends up moderated. First of all, it's a time consuming, pain in the ass; second, the threat is probably enough tto chill people out and third, everything will go back to where it was in a few days...it's the nature of the beast.

The warm reception I've received, the endless support, the encouragement has made me realize that I need to be more involved.
regarding the disgusting armpits ... it may have been funny initially, but i for one am sick of seeing someone's pit-stained skin in my face every other post.
really, its gross enough to see sweat stains on clothing, but how slovenly do you have to let yourself get to actually have yellow staining on your armpits?

I think it is a great idea, I personally pretty much stopped commenting awhile ago and lately it has not been fun to read a lot of the comments, I have been on this site for quite a few years and hope things get back to the great community I know it can be
Moderating comments? Well if you feel you must. Just please lay out was is and is acceptable and make sure we know who the moderators are so that the entire process doesn't seem shady.
Also, you may want to set up a specific email, so that people know who to send questions to in order to ask just why their comment was not allowed, what rule was broken etc. Something like CDANcommentquery or such.
I can't see anyone having a problem with that but like I say, it's going to be a lot of work.

Totally agree, I'm Switzerland on this but the trolls were probably less annoying and time consuming than all the betch and a2a talk. Can't everyone just comment on the posts and take long drawn out or private chat offline.
The truth is it was totally annoying and if like most people you didn't find it funny having to constantly scroll through every post was irritating. Might have been 2 days but yesterday was just 1 day and that got to people. Your intention might not be bad but in jokes are just that, for a few and when they take over a site they are annoying. Period. Sad you find it funny and don't apologise
