Today's Blind Items - A+ List Kindness
I didn't even know these two people knew each other or ever even crossed paths. It turns out though that they do have one thing in common and that is female empowerment and the two of them started a foundation that helps teens in other countries. The particular goal of the foundation is to bribe tribal leaders with cash not to mutilate the genitals of female tribe members. Apparently cash gifts can work miracles in overcoming a centuries old tradition. The teens are then sent to a city to go to school and have a life away from their tribe. So far, the two women have saved about 200 teens from the practice. They each essentially have bottomless wallets to help as many as they are able but have issues getting someone to the tribes at the right times and making the payoffs and coordinating logistics. They are helping two or three people at a time and feel like they are doing great work considering they have only been doing it for about a year. The two women are A+ list but in entirely different fields. One is a singer and the other an actress. They both like to trow out that fake British accent from time to time.

This sounds like something my One True Love would be involved with, but the ratings don't match and her accent isn't fake.

I guess you can call what these two ladies do "colonialism" because they don't allow the tribalist do their traditions, even if they are paid to compensate.
Yeh it sounds like Madonna/Jolie, but what about Kidman for the actress, Angelina and Madonna had a well known spat years ago, so definately crossed paths and good for them it's an horrifying practice.
It was maybe in the last year or so in the UK, that a femail campaigner against FGM set up a mock petition to support genital mutilation, using the argument as it was a centuries old tradition, basically to highlight peoples fear of been seen as racist or insensitive to cultural pracitces and only one person refused to sign it. Quite shocking that this is how thing are these days, that people won't speak out. This is great whoever they are but would be great if it was highly publicized and bring more international pressure hopefully.

That's definitely Madonna. She also paid for surgery to be practiced on an orphaned 12 y/o boy who had his genitals mutilated for a ritual and left for dead on the side of a road. That's how she learnt about mutilation on girls AND boys in rural Malawi. There's also a government led effort to fight these practices that are not well perceived by africans either. It would be considered colonialism if many girls and boys die every year from septicemia due to these rituals. This one is not about celebrities A, B or D list or an act of kindness, this one is about saving lives.
Excision has nothing to do with men, it's a practice that was introduced by women on other women and only another female is allowed to practice the intervention. It's a ritual to make a woman out of a girl. The clitoris is consdered to be a small penis and by cutting off the girl becomes a complete female. It's mostly a money thing. The women who practice excision on little girls make a living out of it. Many local african ngo's are fighting against this practice and money is a big part of the solution because for some women and tribes it's a big source of income.
The traditional purpose for removing the clitoris is to prevent women from enjoying sexual intercourse, thus greatly reducing the possibility of female infidelity once they marry. The men like this, not the women.
