Why, because his drinking (allegedly) is getting out of control. He is probably not much of a husband to come home to. NBC is already worried about his behavior and they aren't going to let him ruin the Tonight Show legacy showing up drunk to work. Though Jay did a good job as making it as generic/vanilla as possible.
So maybe Fallon just wants to put a PR band aid and keep his parting going. His wife used to run the movie production company with Drew Barrymore so she isn't hurting for money and is older than him. I say she takes her kids and go if he won't sober up.
I can see NBC worrying about Fallon's drinking but the guy is popular and with all ages so I doubt they will take him off the air any time soon. I have a couple of really old aunts and let me tell you they think he is the best thing since sliced bread. They don't know or care about his drinking.

girl, for the sake of your children, GET OUT. doesnt she have two doctors? one day they're gonna be able to look up what their dad did. dont exacerbate the pain by staying........

Nancy and Jimmy seemed just fine together this summer throwing back jager shots together (and yes, she was right there with him drink for drink) and with the bar staff while being generally wonderful to every single person they encountered. I know everyone is down on him and he's supposed to be the worst, but all visual evidence to the contrary. They were really cute together and give off an "I married my best friend" vibe. Really don't think it is him.
He doesn't need anybody to bring him down.
He's bringing down himself.
