Four For Friday- Old Hollywood - Funded The KKK

Back in the day this actor was A+ list. Heck, he has been dead for decades and he is probably still A+ list. An Academy Award winner/nominee but only when a lot of the people who hated him had already died. I'm trying to think of a more racist actor from back in the day and I can't think of any. The guy made a ton of movies. Well over 200. That is a lot. Most of his movies had a lots of extras. Our actor was always a huge supporter of white power movements and anything that would keep African American people down. He directly funded a lot of these efforts, but managed to get the studios to also give them money. How? He would hire a lot of these white power people to be extras so they could pay their bills and locations would be places that were owned by these movements. They were usually out in the middle of nowhere and the studio would pay a fee to use the places. Plus, little pop up type stores would show up all run by the organizations and all charging huge markups. The cast and crew were stuck out there and forced to either drive a long way or buy these items. The fact that this guy is considered a hero drives me nuts. People love this guy and think he was the greatest. He was a racist a-hole and basically kept these hate groups funded for three decades practically all by himself. Apparently the studios turned a blind eye because the movies made money. No one would stand up to him. They did subtle things when they could which is why the whole Oscar thing happened so late in life.

It was well known Wayne was a racist. He admitted as much in Playboy back in the 70's. He's made awful comments about Native Americans and blacks. I'm not at all surprised by this, it's been out there forever. And I never, ever got his appeal.

John Wayne. A proposed "John Wayne Day" was just voted down in California because of his numerous statements over the years about blacks and in favor of white supremacy.

Heston was old-style conservative and, other than his stance on guns, a decent guy. Chaplin was very left wing, so not him.

This is definitely John Wayne. Enty couldn'tve made it clearer.

There was a rumor years ago that Wayne died with pounds and pounds of impacted feces in his colon. Of course that could have just been someone's funnier way of saying he was always full of shit.

Other than John Wayne's statements on blacks and other minorities, he was a decent guy.

Wayne, in a 1971 Playboy interview: " With a lot of blacks, there’s quite a bit of resentment along with their dissent, and possibly rightfully so. But we can’t all of a sudden get down on our knees and turn everything over to the leadership of the blacks. I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don’t believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people."

Here's what Wayne had to say about diversity in films in the same interview: "I’ve directed two pictures and I gave the blacks their proper position. I had a black slave in The Alamo, and I had a correct number of blacks in The Green Berets. If it’s supposed to be a black character, naturally I use a black actor. But I don’t go so far as hunting for positions for them. I think the Hollywood studios are carrying their tokenism a little too far. There’s no doubt that 10 percent of the population is black, or colored, or whatever they want to call themselves; they certainly aren’t Caucasian. Anyway, I suppose there should be the same percentage of the colored race in films as in society. But it can’t always be that way. There isn’t necessarily going to be 10 percent of the grips or sound men who are black, because more than likely, 10 percent haven’t trained themselves for that type of work."

Naming Charlton Heston betrays your monumental ignorance. Maybe spend a little time with a history book. Heston may have been several things, but a racist he definitely was not. He was on the forefront of the Civil Rights movement in the 60s, for Christ's sake.

Maybe just stick to commenting on the Kardashians and Taylor Swift.

Me3 said...

I think those statements negate his being decent. Not being hateful is a prerequisite for being a decent person.

Use of the term "the blacks." Is also a dead give-away. Black people never refer to themselves as "the blacks."

Comments Wayne made 45 years ago are hardly relevant today. It was a whole different world, especially for people like Wayne whose views on race probably dated back to his youth.

Ironically, Wayne's greatest film and performance was in The Searchers whose central theme was the racism of white settlers against Indians.

kpist said...

Well, I've only read about one endorsement to one candidate.

Ay said...

So why post anything idiot?

Guesser said...

It's relevant because there can be no excuse by 1971 to support the KKK. A lot of people make dumb comments due to their background and upbringing, but financing a hate group can never be condoned.

naaaaah, my grandfathers nor my father did NOT think or ever talk like that or join any Un-American Activities Committee or John Birch Society, etc.

But don't you know it's those damn racist whites that are the source of all black problems? We're not even allowed to listen to Betonce now because we don't "get it." Gosh if only whitey would let someone else come up.

Sadie said...

John Wayne was pushing 70 when he gave that interview. His attitudes were unfortunately very common in the 20s-30s when he would have been forming his adult attitudes. People who were open-minded about race relations and supportive of African Americans were the minority back then, you can't rewrite history. More's the pity.

If Enty is claiming Wayne got racists hired, then he is accusing John Ford as well as Wayne was Ford's star player. That is far more interesting than Wayne.

The Searchers is probably the most famous film ever made about racism, so it would be odd if it was largely made by a bunch of rabid racists.

Stephie said...

And yet Hillary has the largest percentage of the black vote. I'm not sure what your point is unless you're suggesting her voters don't know who serves them best.

Unfortunately this kind of racism was very much the norm in a lot of people of JW's generation. Not that it's right, but they were just racist as f-ck back then, even people who were in the upper classes of society. If you think he's bad, you should try growing up with a father from Kentucky and a mother from Austria both born around the time of the first world war. I've had to train my mother to STFU and not use a variety of charming terms like "dark ones", "orientals" or "negro" when in public. My father (now deceased) used the 'n' word in polite conversation without batting an eye and he was a college educated professional. My father KNEW I was Gay prior to his death but was in total denial, even when I came over with my (then) Puerto Rican boyfriend... and would complain about 'fairies', etc. My eyes would roll back so hard in my head that I'd have whiplash from being around this man. My mother is in her 90s now and just sighs and says, "I don't want to know..." when I discuss my preference. She does love my longtime SO though, because he takes her shopping and helps her with her hair, but he's 100% German/Dutch ancestry... lol

Zilla1 said...

They endorsed Trump not long ago. To be fair, neither candidate asked for the KKK's support.

I totally get & appreciate what you're saying about the time & environs in which he was brought up and I know how old he was when he gave that particuliar interview b/c I checked to see if he was of my father's generation. He was 64 yrs. old..It was a different time but still it was the 70s,Vietnam,et al...I have no idea about John Ford except that they were good friends & collaborators and I have never seen "The Searchers" (which i should look into too b/c it sounds interesting)but I understand your point about how can a person contradict his product to such an extent....well taken. ; )

I agree you can't even put John Wayne in today's world. He was the icon for the WWII generation and before, and was a product of his time. He was so huge of an icon to them, you can't even put it in today's terms. He was THE model of masculinity for them. He was not afraid of working with strong women actresses, like his many duos with Maureen O'Hara. They were considered an ideal, a strong man and a strong, feisty woman.

By my generation, the biggest negative he had was his support for the Vietnam War. He made a notoriously laughable pro-Vietnam war film "The Battle of the Green Berets" after a very famous pro-war song of the time I remember very well his 1979 last Oscar appearance. He was cancer ridden, thin and frail, and had to announce a lot of anti-Vietnam films, that's I'm sure he never watched one minute of. Nonetheless, he had lots of liberal friends, including Henry Fonda, Hanoi Jane's father. He doesn't fit into today's world at all. Above all, he personified the strong, silent type of man, that basically doesn't exist any more, that men and strong women in his films admired, and felt comfortable with.

You don't much about movies, do you? Sight & Sound ranks The Searchers as the 7th greatest movie OF ALL TIME. Cahiers du Cinema ranks it as 10th greatest movie of all time. The American Film Institute ranks it as the greatest Western ever made and the 12th greatest movie ever made.

Those reactions don't sound mixed to me.

Sadie said...

I don't agree with any of John Wayne's political beliefs, racial, Vietnam War and otherwise. But we can't go back in history (like SJWs do) and suddenly decide we are going to 'politically correct' it. We just can't. I'm all for trashing the Confederate flag and monuments to Confederate generals because all they stood for was racism and slavery. The issue is when they take someone who shared the racist views of his time - I'm using Woodrow Wilson as the example here - and decide he needs to be expunged from history because he was a racist whereas his fame does not derive from being a racist but from creating the League of Nations. It just get ridiculous.
Try to catch The Searchers - it's a brilliant, incredibly moving story and Wayne will surprise you. His best performance.

First of all, I've been lurking forever an have never had anything to add till now....

So verrrry long story short. My grandpa was close friends with John Wayne and if this was true he NEVER EVER would have been friends with my grandpa (an out loud and proud civil rights, and Native Amarican activist and politician). SO I call COMPLETE exaggeration if not bs.

What I believe is John Wayne was a product of his time, and it isn't an excuse for stupid remarks, but his actions towards my grandfathers friends speaks louder to me.

I don't have a problem with Black people (unless they're Muslim), but racism is not exclusive to the white man.
Plenty of racism within the Black US community, Africans in general obviously, the Chinese are super racist, as are other Asian races, Indians are racist, Russians are too, etc etc etc
Innately we are programmed to be racist, it's kind of a self preservation mechanism, it's basically human nature.

I find it pathetic how there is only ever focus on racism from those communities that today, try their best to integrate their minorities.
How much integration is there is non western/white countries, for their minorities???

The US is so racist, that they voted a Black Potus in twice, not based on merit, but purely because of his skin colour - he fucked over everyone, yet apparently it's still not enough for some; some will only be happy when every White person on earth has grovelled on their knees and declared not to be worthy, which in itself is reverse racism: leftism at it's hypocritical best.

Greetings from 'waaaycist' Britain.

At the time of its release The Searchers was only a modest success and got middling reviews (and no Oscar noms). It was only in later years that people started re-evaluating the film and gaining its current iconic status.

Such a great movie. What is ironic is that Wayne plays an ultra-racist former Confederate soldier, perpetrating as many crimes against the Indians as they perpetrated against his family (it is based on a true story about the kidnapping of a girl whose family was murdered). And slowly as he realizes how his blind hatred has so taken over his life that he would be willing to sacrifice the only person he loves to it, is just devastating. Certainly such an exploration of the mind of a racist was stunning for its time.

John Wayne's wives were either Mexican or Peruvian. They were the mothers of his children. I remember a quote of his explaining why he loved Hispanic women - because when he looked in their faces he saw beauty and courage and dignity. How much of a racist could he have been?

As for being White and Educated, I believe you. This proves that school does not teach wisdom or ethics or humanity. But I can teach you something for free. We are all responsible for our own thoughts and feelings. If you feel hatred towards fellow Americans....it is 100% your choice. There are no victims.
