It's That Time Of The Year - Olivia Newton John Boyfriend Stories

Last year, there was that huge Dateline NBC special where detectives showed the proof that Olivia Newton John's former boyfriend was still alive. It all seemed like a lot of mumbo jumbo to me and I never got the feeling they really knew where he was. Well, now the detectives are back and they say they have positive proof that Patrick McDermott is alive and well. The problem is they just aren't going to share it with the rest of the world. Phillip Klein is the lead private investigator and he says "they are checking documents and voice recordings of Mr McDermott that he and his lawyer had provided in return for their agreeing to leave him alone."

"Mr McDermott's wishes, according to his counsel, is not to be 'hounded' any longer by investigators or the media," said Mr Klein.

Uh huh. Of course there has been no statement from his lawyer, just Mr. Klein saying what the lawyer said. Oh and guess what? Klein is writing a book about all this where he promises all the answers. I think it is convenient that Klein made the deal to leave McDermott alone if McDermott gives him the proof that he is alive. Now no one can check anything. But, once a year it makes for a great story. See ya next year when the book is published.

If It's Summer It Must Be Time For A Patrick McDermott Sighting

I think at this point most people probably don't even remember who Patrick McDermott was and they probably care even less whether he is found or not. Unfortunately for us we don't make television and so once a year in the summer we have to have a Patrick McDermott sighting. Last year it was Dateline who generated a bunch of publicity so we would watch their show about him and this year it is probably some network somewhere in the world who is trying to get summer viewers to watch their program.

For those who don't remember, Patrick was the lover of Olivia Newton John when he disappeared on a fishing trip. He owed child support to his ex-wife and really that is about it. There really wasn't much reason for him to go missing unless he was tired of hearing Hopelessly Devoted To You being sung every day by Olivia.

Anyway, logically everyone thinks he was killed at sea back in 2005. The conspiracy theorists have him alive and well and living in Mexico where he has been spotted about 16 times since 2005. He works as a waiter at a fishing resort. Well, back in April investigators say they received a fax from Mexico from a person who was faxing it on behalf of Patrick. Sure, because everyone knows you need a 3rd party to fax something.

The fax basically says that Patrick wants to be left alone and to stop looking for him and that he just wants to live in peace. Well, he can't live in peace because then television shows can't make money and tabloids can't sell extra copies. It doesn't matter if none of this makes any sense because the only thing that matters is trying to keep us interested enough once a year to buy something or watch something. Next year I think they should have him involved in a shootout with a Mexican drug cartel. That would be cool. (Thanks Rebecca)

I'm Not Saying He's Dead, But This Is Flimsy

Yesterday and today I kept seeing these headlines saying Olivia Newton John's ex is alive and well, or at least alive. The first article I clicked was probably the best one I read, and is the one I am linking to here. It is an Australian site and they did some good summarizing on the story although they went for the alive and on the run portion of the report as well. Everyone since this article has just kind of turned it up more and more until it almost sounds like Olivia's ex is in a bar down the street singing Physical and dancing around in a leotard.

Let's go back in time for a little bit and get everyone caught up. Olivia's ex boyfriend had some financial problems and was last seen on a boat down in Mexico. The Coast Guard thinks he drowned. Everyone else has never been so sure because upon his death, his debts went away and his son could get a $100,000 life insurance policy. He and Olivia were in the middle of a nine year relationship when this happened.

OK, so fast forward a few years and Dateline NBC decides to hire a private investigator to look into the disappearance. The investigators set up a website called findpatrickmcdermott.com and they figure that anyone who looks at the site must be a suspect or have some relationship to the case and that the investigators would track them down by looking at the IP address from the people who logged on.

The investigator, named Phillip Klein said that there have been a number of hits from coastal villages along the Mexican and South American coast. Uh huh. So, some guy is in a boat of the coast of Ecuador and fires up the satellite so he can look at the website about himself, and he does this everyday for months up and down the Pacific Ocean? What about the guy who was logged in from London? He isn't a possibility? Just because a guy vanished along the Mexican coast doesn't mean he is still there.

The only conclusive proof to anything that this guy offered was that "The most unusual hits we've gotten were Olivia Newton-John when she was on tour in Asia, every hotel she was registered at and staying at there were hits from that hotel on that night where she was staying." That is fair enough.

So, read the article and I guess watch the report from Dateline on television or YouTube or whatever, but I am not convinced. I'm not saying the guy is dead, I'm just saying that they seem to have put together some pieces that fit what they were looking for and made for good television rather than anything solid.
