Salma Hayek Hates Sofia Vergara

The National Enquirer says that Salma Hayek hates Sofia Vergara right now because Sofia is taking all of the the roles that once went automatically to Salma Hayek. Salma says that Sofia can speak much better English and with much less of an accent that she does and that it is a gimmick to get her more roles and attention. She thinks it is disrespectful to the Latin community. I seem to recall Salma used that same gimmick before. Maybe people just wanted to see someone new. Frankly, I am ready for someone besides Salma or Sofia.

it looks like the answer of the blind item:"what latin actress hates another latin actress ? because another actress steals all her roles"

i never saw Sofia in another role than in her Tv show and in Tom Cruise's girlfriend whereas i saw Salma in many movies

mygeorgie said...

K, I girl crush over both these broads, but Sofia wins hands-down. Salma's cute, but she's a bitch.

And "Frankly, I am ready for someone besides Salma or Sofia" seems a tad disrespectful to Latin Americans. Like you bundle them all up and pic the new 'trend'. C'mon Enty. Not cool.

Nosey Parker said...

@FrenchGirl - Sofia was in Madea Goes To Jail.

Pattie said...

I don't think Enty meant it to be disrespectful to all Latinas. I took his comment to mean that it's disrespectful for casting people to think that if they have a role for a Latina, that Salma and Sofia are there only options. There are plenty of other talented Latina actresses looking for work.

I can honestly see how Salma might be annoyed. I think Sofia is physically lovely, but she's like the living embodiment of jazz hands or something. She's always *on.* I find Modern Family VASTLY overrated, and I honestly question her range as an actress -- whereas Salma has been pretty damned amazing in some of the movies I've seen. I have endless respect for her after watching Frida.

But what roles are they competing for? Salma's rich as hell and has kind of taken the easiest work possible over the past few years, and I honestly can't think of *any* movies with Sofia in them.

This story might be bogus, though. Salma certainly hasn't had any problems being all buddy-buddy with Penelope Cruz.

Ooh ooh ooh this was a blind item. About two Latin actresses. Was it on cdan or another site? And I remember wondering who it could be bc salma and Penelope are bff and America ferrerra is way below their age and doesn't really "compete" with either of them for roles. For some reason, I did not think of Sofia. I don't watch modern family or have much vested interest in her, so I guess that's why.

discoflux said...

Sofia was also in The Smurfs.

Frankly, this is a dull item to me but wtf is up with that picture of Salma?

kltx said...

Sofia is a walking stereotype and that could be upsetting to those who might want to explore deeping character studies. Just a thought.

califblondy said...

Sofia was also in a short-lived sitcom where she basically played the same character she does on Modern Family. While I like her, she takes the Charro act too far.

nolachickee said...

Doesn't Salma have a lot of pull in Hollywood at this point? She has a production company, right? She can do her own projects. I really can't believe that she's competing with Sofia.

Yeah, Sofia can be a little over the top, but she's funny. She's not Charo 2.0.

RenoBlondee said...

Eh, there's room for them both.

Ms Cool said...

LOL @ Ida - "jazz hands." I enjoy Sofia on Modern Family but definitely thing the accent is overdone. I agree that there is room for both. I suspect Salma does say nasty stuff because I get the impression she is a big bitch but I don't think she has to worry about her roles being given to Sofia.

MISCH said...

Oh Salma you have sooo much, just produce your own film....

Daveb said...

Reality is that Salma is forty five years old and the leading lady roles are drying up. She hasn't really had a movie hit, as an actress, in six or seven years (although she has success as a TV producer). I've always liked her but the leading roles are now going to the next generation.

Susan said...

I feel like this is apples and oranges... Salma is a huge respected film actress who takes on serious roles and produces films; Sofia is a sitcom star and now hawks a number of products: Pepsi, Cover Girl, her clothing line at KMart. But, I kind of believe the item. Heard about it last week on Wendy Williams.

I support both of these ladies. Hope they get over themselves and just enjoy all they got going.

SusanB said...

Agree with kltx - Sofia is a walkiung stereotype. We've never watched Modern Family (keep meaning to but just haven't yet) but from her commercials alone she just seems too-too. She reminds me of Carmen Miranda.

selenakyle said...

To me, no matter how this was meant or how it's taken, Salma just sounds jealous.

I love them both and the world of entertainment is plenty big enough for the two of them, so just pipe down over there, Salma!

Comma Chaser said...

I like Sofia Vergara, but she reminds me of Lucille Ball, comic-timing wise.

I don't think Vergara do something like _Frida_. Soul Plane II: Judgement Day, and Soul Plane III: Revenge of the Spliff, sure, but never any of the heavy dramatic roles. You'll be fine, Ms. Hayek.

Giulia said...

Walking stereotype, yes. The "loud and colorful" south-american.

And I agree that Modern Family gets way more credit than it deserves. It's not that funny.

Sherry said...

I heart Sofia and love love love Modern Family. She is the Columbian Lucy. If Salma said this she's feeling the stigma of being older in H'wd. It's not a nice place for any older ladies. Period!

Tempestuous Grape said...

Both of those photos are horrible.

Giulia said...

I share a house with 2 south american girls, one of them Colombian, and neither of them (or any of their south american friends) speaks or acts like that.

Living in Miami Beach in the 90s, I fell in love with Vergara because of her intense "girl next door" sexiness. She was everywhere on Univision and Telemundo, and when she hit it big, I was happy for her. Learning that the cruel, bitter, cold little other actress is resentful of her? That doesn't upset me in the slightest. Team Vergara!

figgy said...

Who knows, maybe Sofia IS capable of serious acting? I hope she gets the chance to try some movies soon. I think she's encouraged to be over-the-top on Modern Family (which I loooove).

Adore Salma too, her serious acting talent is beyond question. They're both sexy beyond belief, add to the list of those with girl crushes!

auntliddy said...

from what I have read about Salma, this would be completely out of character for her. I don't buy it.

Mango said...

I find Vergara adorable. Surely there's enough work for both of them?

Chrissy Buns said...

I think Salma is better looking. For some reason it looks like Sofia's face is pulled to tight. But they are both lovely, and it would be nice to see the get along.

BigMama said...

"she's like the living embodiment of jazz hands or something"

Ida, that might be my favorite comment on this site EVER!

Amartel said...

Oh, Salma! Speaking English without a "Latin" accent is "disrespectful" to the "Latin" community? You big-boobied loser. This respect thing is really not that complicated and has nothing to do with accents.

Maja With a J said...

I quite like Sofia Vergara and I am a big fan of Modern Family. But yeah, she exaggerates her whole "latina-ness" - because people love it! I think she is just giving her fans what they want, and maybe she doesn't have a problem with it because she and the people close to her in real life know what she is really like. Who knows?

And I don't think there is a single ethnicity that is being properly and fairly represented on TV.

Barton Fink said...

I also think that asking a woman from Colombia not to sound like she's Colombian is just rude, for what it's worth. No one complains when Ricky Gervais sounds British.

Elle said...

@Daveb - Sofia is 40, so she is not that far behind age wise. Leading lady roles don't dry up after 40 it's just that sex kitten has a shelf life (ie Goldie Hawn).

I honestly think that the Gloria character has gotten harder to understand, so perhaps producers are pushing for more accent and character, or maybe Sofia herself is finding the character more. I myself have a fairly strong accent and I sometimes find myself missing her 'yokes with Yay' because I am trying to process what she actually said. Her facial expressions are great and her timing is great but the heavy accent kills it a little for me and she sounds sort of whiny and nasal.

Lol'd at "jazz hands'

Sofia's accent drives me crazy I hate it...it's so obviously done for attention.

Sylvia said...

I can't stand Sofia's accent, I find it very annoying. I feel she over exaggerates it.

She also came out in that movie with "Four Brothers" with Mark Wahlberg.

chopchop said...

Why does the everyone assume women are always in competition with each other? I read that Enquirer bit and I don't buy it for one second. It was all "sources" and no direct quotes.

chopchop said...

Why does *everyone* ... not "the everyone". Oops.

MnGddess said...

I like "the everyone" better.

And what is up with Salma's face in that photo? Look closely. It's an awful photo!

Henriette said...

Salma doesn't have a problem with Jblow and Penny Cruz, so why does she have a problem with Sofia?

ClaireFrasier said...

But, didn't Salma also slam Jennifer Lopez years ago? Saying she wasn't really Latina? I just remember her running her mouth... I never liked Jennifer Lopez, but I remember thinking: "Why does Salma get to say who's this or that? Who left her in charge?"

And I like Sofia. And why shouldn't she play it up? Don't most comic actors?

parissucksliterally said...

Oh shut up Salma. You are just upset that you are not the only hot Latina actress with big boobs anymore. I think Sofia is way hotter than Salma. And more likeable.

mygeorgie said...

The whole show is about "over-the-top" characters: the flamboyant gay, crusty old rich guy, neurotic mom, snotty teen, bratty younger brother. I've seen Sofia on Ellen a couple years ago & she wasn't the characature she plays on MF, so I think it's unfair to say she's like that *all* the time, just as it's ridiculous to say "Eric Stonestreet (Cam) misrepresents the gays"

The ridiculousness of the show is why I love it so much!

Lelaina Pierce said...

What roles has Sofia stolen? The Tyler Perry movie? New Years Eve? She is in the new 3 Stooges movie, too. Salma has been all movies, for the most part, so I'm confused about the role stealing.

weezy said...

Salma's in no position to criticize another Latina's cultural authenticity. She attended a convent school in New Orleans, and may have been born there. Her parents were first-generation Lebanese immigrants to Mexico. She spent part of her adult career getting her wealthy French billionaire husband to marry her.

La Pachuquita said...

Ohh, I was first to call this one right when the blind about the two Latina actresses came out! Awesome. my first correct blind!

Lori said...

only her father is of Lebanese descent, her mother is of mostly Spanish descent. She was born in Coatzacoalcos, as well. She is Mexican.

Lori said...

My mom is Jewish (German/Russian) and I was born in Napa, Ca...does that make me less of a Latina? I think not.

crila16 said...

Yes...but did you see Grown Ups? Sophia is getting stupid, low budget, campy role movie parts...not Oscar contendee roles. Salma started slumming it with her roles after her Oscar nominee (don't remember if she won). If she sticks to real acting, she'll get the roles over Sophia. Salma is higher quality (though I do love Sophia)
