Son Of Eagles Coach Found Dead At Training Camp

Andy Reid's oldest son Garrett Reid, who has suffered from drug addiction and legal problems in the past was found dead in a dorm room at Lehigh University early this morning. Lehigh is the home of the Philadelphia Eagles training camp. Garrett had been helping out in camp and police have said they don't suspect any foul play, but that does not mean of course that his death is not suspicious. Garrett was 29 years old. Andy Reid did not show up for practice this morning and reporters started asking questions which is how Garrett's death was relayed to the media.

It was bound to end sooner or later for Garrett or his brother Britt. When both of them faced jail time in 2007, the judge said that Andy's home was a "drug emporium". Garrett put almost a hundred pills in his rectum to smuggle them into jail. This guy needed mega help that he obviously never received.

The Eagles training camp is just up the road from our village. The players in town crowd the roads and restaurants with their entourages, etc, but its great for local econcomy.
This young man was troubled for years, and never got his act together. This is the tragic legacy from a sports establishment that convinces young talent that they are above the common man, and are entitled to the 'good life.'
(Look at the whole Penn State mess: again the system ensured the players/coaches they were above it all, and they betrayed everyone by not being honest about what was going on..)
But he's a lost kid.. what a price to pay.

This should have been Buddy Ryan's sons. Andy Reid is one of the good guys.

Unknown, he wasn't "young talent," he was the coach's son. Coopersburg is obviously a longer distance from Lehigh than Wilmington (where I am).

Self medicating from drugs shows a much deeper problem. Whether it was intentional or "accidental" (which, truly I always take accidental overdoses as the same as intentional, maybe subconscious, but still.)

We need to remove the stigma of mental illness in this country, whether temporary or permanent, if someone needs help there should be no shame in asking for it.

Especially in the sports culture.

So much judgment for such a sad tragedy. Wow.

I'm very sorry for his family and hope others can learn from this and get help- no matter what the issue.
