I think Hamm is outstanding on Mad Men. I can't take my eyes off him. However anything I've seen him in outside of Mad Men, I've found him goofy. It's hard to reconcile the two views.
Advice to all women, if you want to marry a man give him a 3 year window of opportunity to give a ring and set a date. Pass that time frame, you're just a time killer to him.

Wow, kind of shocked that there's such strong sentiment for marriage, to say nothing of a demanding marriage window. Who's to say Westfeldt was ever pushing for marriage? Perhaps they liked what they had, looked around and saw people unhappily married, and decided to keep things straightforward for as long as it lasted.
I would much rather be with a guy I loved being with unconditionally than impose a dramatic timeline on relationship and deem it a "waste" simply because it didn't climax with him putting a ring on it.

trudi, i think 3 years is generous. people can think he's an asshole but come on. these 2 have been together for years. she should have moved on a long time ago---maybe he would have gone after her. he didn't put her in this situation---she had a big part in putting herself there.

Why is marriage always considered the "end point" for a relationship? Even if a couple does intend to be life partners? As a hetero gal in a decade long relationship, with both of us committed, in each other's wills, and damned happy, marriage is still just a word OTHER people seem to bandy about like a weapon -- what the fuck? @Madmama, to answer your question, I watched Mad Men through Netflix up through, I think, season four or so. The next season wasn't available at the time. The last season I saw was the one when his friend died, the woman who was married to the real Don Draper. I can understand what others see in him, but he just doesn't do it for me, never has.
Personally, I don't at all think marriage needs to be the end point to a relationship, but the wording of this blind does seem to indicate that the woman hoped for it one day.
Of course I don't know if that is true or the writer's way of creating drama and sympathy for the woman.
If it is true, shame on both the man and the woman, really. She shouldn't have waited so long and he shouldn't have strung her along.

I was always under the impression that Hamm & Westfeldt were unmarried by mutual decision, not that he was holding out on her. If this blind is correct, and she wanted to get married but neglected to make this fact clear to him, well...I would guess that he's not a mind-reader after all, and if she tells him she's fine w/them not being married, how would he know differently?
Then again, he could just be acting like a jerk, or their relationship may just be coming to its natural end--some last a lifetime, some several years, and some don't make it past "Was it good for you?" If this is indeed the two of them, then I hope the breakup is as civil as possible, and that she in particular goes on to bigger and better things.

Re: Marriage - I have mixed feelings on it. I have been through two divorces (thankfully only one of which involved children) and I am not sure it should be the ultimate goal or if I will ever do it again. A couple of months ago I moved in with my girlfriend and it has been amazing. I love her more every day and have been happier than I can remember being in decades. But I would hate to think my commitment to her is meaningless without some sheet of paper and some jewelry.

I got the impression that Westfeldt had stood by Hamm when his career was floundering and used her behind the scenes connections to get him the Mad Men audition. Then his career far eclipsed hers and I guess his loyalty only went so far.
Not that I blame the dude -people grow apart - but the skeeviness with all the other women and the way he treated her like a ball and chain in public - not cool, not cool.
The guy's a top notch actor and has a great sense of humor about himself. But seems the fame & adulation went to his head.
