Selena Gomez is Glamour's Woman Of The Year

I know that you are thinking to yourself that you could come up with 100 different women who would be a better choice for Glamour's Woman Of The Year than Selena Gomez. Then again, you probably could come up with 1M better mothers than the former mother of the year winner Dina Lohan. No, seriously, she did win a mother of the year prize not that many years ago. At the time Lindsay had been only arrested five or six times, so Dina was still considered to have done a good job. Selena Gomez is a woman. I know it seems like she is only 14 because she dates Justin Bieber sometimes, and when anyone stands next to him they look ten years younger, but she is over the age of 18. In fact, in the magazine article she says that if she had stayed in Texas she would probably have been a teen mom so already she is being a good role model. Of course, the fact that she is 20 means that if she had kids now would also mean that she would not actually be a teen mom, but we get the point. Glamour wants to draw in the younger crowd and you are not going to get that by naming Oprah as woman of the year. Besides, Oprah has her own magazine and names herself woman of the year every year. The vote is never even close, although one year, Jada Pinkett Smith was a write in candidate and then Oprah started spending some serious money to win and then realized she is the owner of the magazine and controls the ballots and won unanimously. Glamour can do whatever they want with their magazine, I just have a tough time believing there are no worthier candidates.

Wasn't Rihanna their woman of the year last year? I don't see what her great achievements were either, but she was willing to give an interview that was her first comment on the Chris Brown situation. Maybe the choice of Woman of the Year is dependent on who is willing to give a revealing interview.

Just because you have breasts, wear red lipstick and are over 18 does not a woman make. It's alot more complex than that.

Seems like the qualifications are young, beautiful, and dates a major douche if Rihanna and Selena won this "honor".

The woman of the year is usually just an "it" girl.

Glamour used to really inspire me but I cancelled my subscription a few months ago because of things like....THIS.

Just proves that society values glamor and beauty in women above brains and character. You'd think a woman's magazine would understand that.

I'm sorry but outside of CDaN, I never hear about this girl. Looks like Glamour is headed the way of Cosmo.

@SusanB, Brains and character don't sell products. Women's magazines exist as vehicles for advertising, mostly for fashions and cosmetics. Not a lot of build-your-own-rocket kits being advertised in Glamour.

Obviously Selena's PR agent called in a few favors for this one.

Glamour jumped the shark on the whole "Woman of the Year" issue when they named Britney Spears WotY about 10 years ago. I canceled my subscription about 5 years ago because it was heading the way of Cosmo.

Um...guys, the magazine is called 'Glamour'. What were you expecting?

But apparently there ARE no worthier PR firms, Enty, so Gomez it is! This sounds exactly like Bradley Cooper's "Sexiest Man" People cover, something which had millions scratching their heads (especially with Ryan Gosling lurking around). Gomez's PR flacks are in overdrive - hence the Glamour title and cover. Throw in her relationship with Bieber and it makes perfect sense.

Sure, she deserves it as about much as Cooper deserved that People cover (his smarm is so obvious), but hey! It's Hollywood, Enty.

When I see young girls like Selena on magazine covers, I wonder if they (their agency or PR) didn't pay for the cover. In the past I heard that Ashley Tisdale paid to get on the cover of some magazines.

The Glamour woman of the year is usually the biggest name they can get to turn up to the Glamour awards, or at least that's how it works for the UK Glamour.

That photo is freaking me out. Too many balloon. Might pop. Argh.

Someone on this site mentioned this Facebook page a few years ago if anyone is interested: Miss Representation. It talks about different ways women are portrayed in media as objects instead of human beings. I've learned a lot from it. Sorry I can't remember who here told me about it.

Dina wasn't named mother of the year by Glamour. She was named mother of the year by some Long Island Association.

she deserves because for many teens, she's the happy girlfriend of Bieber!(i don't find other reason)

I think Selena is gorgeous but Woman of the Year?
Also, I think it's oogy when women pose with their mouth open like a blow-up doll.

I'd guess it was a good old fashioned cash bribe to the editors that got her this "award".

I always think she and vanessa hudgens are the same person. vanessa hudgens might be more interesting actually.

I think to be named Woman of the Year, you need to have done something interesting or impressive at some point during that year. What has Selena done? Anything?

she's really cute, high name recognition AND, no arrest record (bonus!). sounds like an easy win.

"Glamour" magazine is totally dumbed down now and getting worse all the time. I've been buying it for years but I think I'm going to stop. What really did it for me was when they wrote an article about Emma Watson from "Harry Potter" and made all these cutesy-poo jokes about how she can't ride dragons anymore now that filming's over. Because she was riding dragons for real during filming, right?! It was so juvenile I was embarrassed to be reading it. They never would have printed that kind of junk even five years ago.

19 year old GIRLS are not women yet.

I think she is adorable, but come ON.

Women of the year should denote someone who's achieved something other than celebrity. I just can't with Selena. Pretty yes. Substantial, no.

She looks like a Barbie she's so darn pretty. I'm with you guys though, that does not make her woman of the year.

Not all our 18 yr old TX Hispanic girls are teen moms. Way to go, Glamour...

Glamour has become fairly lame...Allure is sort of what Glamour used to be...

Off-Topic I really love LouLou, even tho I'm far outside the average age demographic...

I think Selena is a fine singer, but Woman of the Year usually implies accomplishments other than record sales and concert attendance...God knows it's hard to find a celebrity that doesn't live a scandalous life, though

I think I grew out of Glamour and Cosmo around the age of 22. The articles are truly ridiculous.

Interesting choice...but I really like Selena Gomez and I think she's a great role model. She is UNICEF's youngest ever Goodwill Ambassador and she's also done a lot more for charity (not just donating but actually doing stuff). Link here if you are interested. I can't think of another celeb who is around her age that does even half as much as she does. Good for her.

Thank you, donner! That's the point I was going to address about this whole thing. So, if she'd stayed in Texas would her mother not have paid as much attention to her and she would've ended up a teen mom but since she was able to make the family money it was worth investing the time in her?

I was a little surprised by the choice but Selena Gomez seems to have a good head on her shoulders (with the exception of her choice in boyfriend but hey we all make mistakes). She seems like a good role model and hey I'd MUCH rather see her get the title than one of those K family members! This girl at least contributes to society and wasn't handed everything because of her last name and started acting at a young age.

I say good for her!
