#3 - Apparently Russian mobsters are out in force this week and were also at Paris Fashion Week. They basically threaten every Eastern European model with bodily harm unless the model gives up almost everything they make during the shows. When one A++ list designer was told about the troubling trend, he said, " Why should I care about them? I have a show to do. The show is about my designs and the models are secondary. If one of my models gets hurt, I can find another one in a second."

This isn't surprising at all. The Fashion world is so self centered, from the age and body fat percentage of the models, to... no that's pretty much it. It's just such a shallow, narcissistic, money grubbing, soul less industry. Weird fashions just to be weird? Art for arts sake, that isn't wearable, for what? To impress other people that you have/can afford the latest trend? That will be at the bottom of the laundry pile in a couple of days, or stuffed in to the back of the closet? emptiness. What will that piece of clothing mean when you are alone? staring at the ceiling at night? Don't forget greed for shoes, bags, and clothes is the Kardashians religion. I don't care for the fashion industry. Can you tell?

I'm having a hard time understanding how Russian mobsters could infiltrate fashion shows and somehow strong arm the models in handing over their paychecks. Phone numbers maybe, we all know many models have horrible taste in men, but not paychecks. If this was in Russia ... Sure I'd buy it.. But France? C'mon

they could just walk up to them, know in advance their names, where they're from, their family names, and intimidate the guys. Walk up and say in Russian, " Hi, we know your name, who you are, where you're from, we know your whole family's names, we are going to have them lose their jobs, homes, livelihoods, and/or be murdered/raped/disappear if you don't give us your paycheck, we'll see you on Monday at four."

Keep in mind that they were threatening East European models - These are models that are probably under the age of 20 (if they're walking in Paris Fashion Week). They still have family back home. When their fashion careers dry up in 5-7 years, they'll be back home too.

Also, keep in mind, just like the Mafia isn't limited to Italy, the Russian mob isn't exclusively in Russia. Some of the most violent crimes in Toronto are being committed by Russians.

I love clothes. But I did work experience in the fashion industry and have found that I'd rather work in an area where I am offering a longer term option of happiness to the world.

I never said gay men ONLY care about men. A lot of gay men in that industry don't care about females. You hear women complain about skinny models and how the modeling industry presents unrealistic images of women and such BUT pay attention to who's designing the clothes.

Models don't usually get paid much for fashion week, they use the new ones who need tear sheet photos and they pay them in clothes if anything. A name model would be paid through her agency so they can take their cut.
