Zac Efron - Career Over?

After news broke yesterday about Zac Efron's latest troubles, no one in his camp could get their story straight. He told police he ran out of gas and yesterday spun a story about how he went out for sushi in the middle of the night. His bodyguard turned out to be a convicted drug dealer who lied to everyone he could think of about what really happened. Zac had told the world that he was sober when he really wasn't. His latest movie bombed. He still has a huge fan base from his days in High School Musical and he is still a good looking guy. He has had chances headlining movies and has failed every single time. With his drug use and sobriety issues is his career over? Is his career headed the way of lots of other actors who have been at the top and come crashing down?

Will he end up being a whatever happened to kind of actor? I actually think he has a chance to have a career. Studios don't give up on people they have bankrolled to previously headline movies. It has to get really bad for that to happen. If he can somehow sort out his sobriety issues he has a chance. A good chance. He has people that buy tickets and will see him in almost anything. The one downside I see is that he is not the greatest actor in the world so his upside is limited. After his recent string of failures he was going to need to take some supporting roles and build back up to a headlining chance. What we haven't seen from him and what everyone loves is him being honest or talking about his issues. Does he have to? Nope. It is his life and he doesn't owe the public any explanations. But, rules are different when you are counting on those same people to support you and spend their money on you.

Enty seems to have some peculiar passion for Efron. Shia, Demi, Lindsay, Charlie, Brooke and the various other addicts around don't get this kind of sympathy.

movie career over tv career maybe not.

BeckyMae said...

Enty likes 'em pretty, young and damaged....

Henriette said...

Zaquisha is pretty, but has no presence or charisma. Even his drug taking doesn't make him interesting.

LottaColada said...

Cliffs notes please, @Harry?

Henriette said...

@BeckyMae
Pretty, young,damaged, and boring.

BeckyMae said...

If he can play Opposite Days with Lindsay and actually go to rehab, surround himself with decent peeps and take on some lesser but gritty TV/film roles he could be in with a chance....the odds are not in his favour tho...

Does he really still have a huge fan base from HSM? Those tweenies moved on a long time ago. Violet jr no. 2 is beyond embarrassed when the HSM duvet cover goes on these days and she's only 13.
That said, addiction's an awful thing and I feel for him.

BeckyMae said...

@henriette oh yes, he is 50 Shades of Beige to me...

I hope that hair is over.

Charlie's 10x worse than he is and Charlie still works even if its cable tv now.

Henriette said...

Isn't it sad that getting your ass whipped by a homeless group is the most exciting thing about you?

Unknown said...

what Becky Mae said, go to rehab, be humble, work hard. He's young and pretty, there is still time (see RDJ for details, although I don't think Zac has RDJ's talent)

Henriette said...

First all, RDJ is extremely intelligent and charismatic. His interviews are amazing balls! Charlie Sheen is a crack head with a pretty amazing work ethic and has some charisma. He may be a total loser, but he still is interesting. Zaquisha just doesn't have any of that.

Maybe Oprah will come offering a reality show?

Brad Pitt is good-looking and dull, and he's done OK. Granted, he's not an addict, except for being an acknowledged pothead. But I think there's work for the dull in Hollywood. You just have to work with what you have instead of fighting against it.

Maybe the Rick Schroeder route would work for him - a 'troubled good guy' role on a police procedural.

Better his career be over than his life...

I don't believe for one second that it was a group of homeless people that beat him and his body guard up. Pissed off dealers? You bet. Hungry homeless people rarely have enough energy to push their carts, never mind beat the crap out of two people.
And the Enty that keeps writing about the tweeners must be the one who applied for a jog at Tiger Beat and got passed over for someone a little more perkier and less bitchy.

Happy Friday!

@fancy -
Did you see the photo (staged) from yesterday's nasty post? He seriously (to me) looked hot.

Go look without judgement.

Always loved your posts, @Nutty Flavor.

But you totally need to call him Ricky Schroder ;)

so your finally positive on zac?

Hollywood forgives anyone who can make them bank.

If he does actually get clean, & does some lower budget/indies, supporting roles that do well...his career can recover, he is young, good looking, can take direction, and is a nice guy...

nancer said...

this guy is a painfully bad actor, so i don't think he's got a career even if he gets sober. i've seen him in 2 movies and he really just sucks.

Now! said...

@Alita, thank you! And I will remember that. Will also remember it for Ricky Martin and Donny Osmond.

Zac has a good chance of coming back. He seems like a decent guy and hasn't mistreated anyone like LiLo. He's just messed up, like most others in Hollywood.

You don't have to be interesting to be successful. Interesting is subjective, anyway. As long as you have a decent work ethic and don't screw up, you should be good to go.

Zac needs to fire any hangers-on and get into a legit rehab center. Stay there for 3-4 months. Hire a sobriety coach after rehab, and go to therapy. Hire a new agent to start looking for roles in TV and indie film.

Look at Matthew McConaughey as a guide. Granted, McConaughey is just a pothead who starred in crappy rom-coms. But he stripped his career down to the basics, took roles in smaller yet strong films. And now he's an Oscar winner who has a good shot at an Emmy later this year.

I don't think Efron is talented as McConaughey, but he's not awful by any stretch. He can be solid and if he can get clean, there's no reason Efron can't bounce back. But it's up to him.

Harry Knuckles said...

Lotta, baby, Zac is screwing the pooch with his drinking and drugging and lying. He smartens up or he's toast. Are you naked?

Unknown said...

Meh he seems like a little bitch. James Franco is waaaay better! Give him the roles : )

Unknown said...

Zac is getting some good reviews for his work in Neighbors, so I don't think his career is over with just yet.

__-__=__ said...

101 guys look just like him. Maybe they could give parts to actors who value their craft and their life. I wouldn't hire Zac. Nobody needs that drama.

Nancy said...

I don't think Zac is that great of an actor. But one of the things he has going for him is that are no rumors of him being unprofessional on the set (in other words he does not pull the onset antics of the Lindsay Lohan variety) and I hope he gets sober for his own sake.
Hollywood does want him to happen, so at this juncture, it would be wise for him to own up to the addiction and take rehab seriously and then go for supporting roles in strong movies.

LottaColada said...

@Harry, I was forced to read it! I'm ignoring your last question.

smn1985 said...

I have nothing to contribute other than he was pretty hot and charming in "17 Again." I never watched HSM but from 17 Again I can see his appeal. Hope he gets his sh#t together.

I just jumped over to TMZ to read more about the Zac escapades. I didn't realize he had broken his jaw last year after claiming to slip in a pool of water at his house. To quote the hilarious Becky Mae, "not the face! not the face!".

I don't like seeing anyone struggle, and I'd hate to see him go the way of Edward Furlong. Best of luck, and I hope he gets away from the leeches that aren't looking out for his best interests

JSierra said...

I loove Zac, I could stare at him all day. The awkward moment wasn't too bad, it wasn't spectacular either. He is just so damn hot.

witwritergirl said...

He's still young and good looking and not without talent.
Everybody loves a good comeback story, so he can make it happens if he gets help and surrounds himself with better people. God bless him. For some strange reason I'm really hoping he can do it.

Count Jerkula said...

I've never seen him act in anything, so I can't speak on his skills, but to me that says his career was mediocre to begin with. Personally I'm surprised it had any legs past High School Musical.

That said, if he gets his shit together, he'll work somewhere. 4th guy on a sitcom, bit part in a movie, that kind of stuff to support himself and keep his union health insurance.

califblondy said...

I've got one embarrassed by her once devotion to the Biebs. Kids move on fast these days.

beth said...

Zac is actually a really nice kid who, by all accounts, is a dream on set, so I think there will be a lot in the industry who are ready to give him another chance when he's ready.

That said, Zac is actually the scariest type of addict. He's really not that into the Hollywood scene and doesn't go out much. He does drugs/drinks at home either with a few friends or (even scarier) alone. That we're finding out about all of his issues anyway shows just how far gone he is.

Unknown said...

If NPH can survive Doogie anyone can survive any juvenile acting efforts.

Im sure we've all got at least one person in our lives who struggles with addiction. Those who take it seriously are successful in managing it. My cousin wit almost two decades of sobriety never put a four month coin around his neck. He was quiet, focused dedicated.

Gotta respect Matthew Perry and the others who put sobriety first. Addiction and narcissism are two halves of one whole. Hollywood feeds on narcissism.

I hope he conquers his demons. Anything else is gravy.

awww he is so cute so makes me sad

but I think done and done

if he doesn't get his act together very soon

@BeckyMae, so Enty is the Count?!?

D Brown said...

Supposedly these activities also cost him most/all of the money he had made and he was touting possibility of another HSM film.

B626 said...

Let's wait and see what kind of $$$ Neighbors comes up with. We know he was a drugged out mess on that set.

Anonymous said...

He's getting good/great reviews for his role in the upcoming movie with Seth Rogen, Neighbors. Most of his recent movies have been indies, haven't they? I saw The Paperboy on Netflix, and he did a good job in that. I think the thing with Zac is that he wants to present this good boy image to all his the world and HSM fans, and leads a secret life behind closed doors. Isn't that what the environmentalist, clean-living River Phoenix did?

Count Jerkula said...

@LowKey: There is a good mix of the that I can work with. At this point I'm old and wise enough to give back some points on pretty and young to get less damage, if a long term opportunity presents itself.

CharRicho said...

Maybe it would be better for him if he does fade into obscurity. Get a regular job or maybe something behind the scenes.

Being a movie star involves premieres, parties, networking... and a lot of alcohol. And usually drugs too. The only way to have a chance at staying sober is to remove yourself from those temptations. Maybe it's easier to do it when you're older and already had a long successful career, when it becomes more acceptable to say "ok, I showed up, you took some pictures, now I'm going home to bed". But Zac is not going to get that chance. He's going to have to stay out, work rooms, work crowds, stay up all night...

I DON'T have an addiction problem, but I'm pretty sure if I was going to those parties all the time and was told I was not allowed to drink alcohol, I couldn't do it.

BeckyMae said...

@LowKey you may have started Conspiracy Theory 108,456!

@Sunnyi saw Michael K on Dlisted used "not the face! Not the face!" As his header for his Efron post, made me so proud to alliterates with such a comedic genius!

nancer said...

he was awful in 'the paperboy.'

Count Jerkula said...

Whenever I hear "Not the face" I think of the DeNiro/Barkin sex scene in This Boy's Life. That and the "Dry gultch" the bully story are my fave parts of the movie. "I picked up a road apple and shoved it right in that Bully's face" Dwight was an entertaining fellow.

Anonymous said...

He's such a sweet looking boy. I hope he can turn his life around and seek long-lasting help and support for his demons.

He should move down here and get his life and health back on track without all the temptations and prying eyes watching his every move.

Unknown said...

I just can't with Zac. He's too much of a pretty boy and a delicate flower to be a draw in TV or movies. I wish him all the best in life. Maybe when he gets his shite together he can write, produce or direct. If he doesn't have kiddie issues he can take over when Dan Schiender gets convicted.
