Your Turn

HBO says that Game Of Thrones has passed The Sopranos as the most watched show in their history. Which one do you like better?

Never seen GOT and never missed The Sopranos

Game of Thrones. Though I will give props to Sopranos for paving the way for amazing story telling. We wouldn't have Breaking Bad, Mad Men, etc. without this genius show!

I saw ONE scene from Sopranos, where a guy beat a pregnant woman to death. Nope nope nope.

But I never miss GoT. I'm a nerd, and a history nerd at that, and the basis in the War of the Roses fascinates me. GRR Martin is a masterful world builder. (I do turn away at the violent stuff - I accidentally watched the Red Wedding and let's just say I prefer to "read" violence rather than watch it. My brain can filter it out when I'm reading, but watching, nope.)

I'm lame and I've never seen either.. I want to watch GOT though. I have the books too... Hmm.

Deadwood! I was so mad when they cancelled that. WTF, HBO? What does a show have to do to stay on? Win 8 Emmy awards and a Golden Globe? Oh, wait....

Sopranos never did it for me. Just couldn't get interested. Bought my mother every season of it on DVD, though.

I watched half an episode of GoT and a nine-year old walked into the room. EEP! Grabbed the remote and turn it off immediately. But I'm going to start giving Benedryl to the whole lot of them on Friday nights so I can start watching it.

The online fan community was in its infancy when the Sopranos debuted. And there was no On Demand or NetFlix. You watched it or you watched the replay, that was it. If they're counting post-broadcast new viewers, it's not quite a fair comparison.
Not being snarky, just comparing the circumstances surrounding the popularity of both shows.

Uh GOT of course.

Seven, I think they said it was too expensive to produce, just like Rome. I loved Deadwood...Swearingen Cocksucker! I've watched GoT and it's good but I gotta go with Sopranos. Being a Bergen County girl, I knew these families and dated their sons. Much more relatable for me.

GoT!!!!!
Read the books too.

@7: That kind of stuff can happen when whores won't get abortions.

Deadwood they say was all about getting to statehood, and there was no more ever planned.

Rome I enjoyed, but they said it was too expensive to keep going. I don't know how GOT is not just as, if not more, expensive.

GOT rocks my world but I'll never forget Tony, Carmella and Big Pussy. They were just so unpredictable and awesome. Plus it's real. White walkers and dragons not so much

auntliddy said...

Agree. Sopranos opened to door to brilliant writing and directing. I dont think one has to choose; 2 different genres.

Dingle- good call. Oz was f*cking awesome!!!!

Sopranos. The humor was a nice counterpoint to the beatings, garroting and occasional friend/relative murdering. Haven't watched GOT tho - it could be a laugh a minute.

Game of Thrones. Books are obviously better, but I think the show is doing a wonderful job of staying true to them. Most of the casting choices are also very well done. Except Ramsay. That character is not supposed to be Remotely appealing.

Amartel said...

Sopranos. Character driven as opposed to special effects driven. GOT is interesting, and it does have some character development, but it's mainly just a very expensive cartoon and not personal the way the Sopranos was. I'm not bummed when a character dies or the season ends.

Sopranos. Tried to watch GoT but it just bored me to death. Thought the acting was lame and the plot tired. Nothing to set design or characters either. More like Mommy porn and probably popular in a 50 Shades kind of way.

Astra Worthington said...

Never watched either and I'm pretty sure I never will.

Never have seen either. But I'll turn to Sapranos first. I loved on the easy coast for several years and got involved with the real deal. (I didn't know it at first, even tho I joked to them that they were like mafia. Der. They would laaaaaaaff..) Anyhooo. I got so curious about that life, I wore myself out on researching, climaxed, and needed a rest when sopranos came along.
I will say that there's a more sophisticated / educated /hottttt guy in a family than I've yet to see portrayed on TV. HOTTER / taller young A.Garcia. (-;

Only watched one scene from the Sopranos, I remember spaghetti and an old man shooting someone then running into a closet I think? Beats me, I was baked out of my mind and all I could think was Pasta!!!!!

GoT is the bombdiggity, but I also miss Carnivale. It sucks they left that one in a total cliffhanger.

Soprano's...no contest for me.

Real Sex 27, but seriously, I like GOT, but the Sopranos is better. Except for the last stupid episode. If you haven't seen the Sopranos in a while, watch it again. You're amazed about how well it is written and stands the test of time.

Was there any doubt AJ would be Robert Iler's last role. Between him and the dumbass kid from 2 1/2 men, done.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is hilarious.

Sopranos. It took me a few times to try n get into it. It is a masterpiece. GOT is good but Sopranos is a great masterpiece. No contest for me.

Jason Blue Eyes said...

Sopranos without question. All those scenes with Tony and Carm going at each other...Jesus. Goose bump city.

Sopranos. My love of GoT is waning. Too many storylines, little storytelling, and not much happening, aside from a murder here and there.

Janet296 said...

GoT for me

Game of Thrones. Sopranos was great TV but Jersey working class culture drives me batty. I want to pass a New Jersey (and New York and Massachusetts) state law saying that the F word can only be used a a verb describing the act of sex. It's not an adverb, it's not a noun, it's not an adjective. So stop fricking saying fricking before every fricking word every fricking time you fricking open your fricking mouth. Jersey culture.

Seven of Eleven said...

@lazyday, HBO thinks the f-bomb must be dropped in every sentence for maximum impact. As someone who very rarely swears, I was startled by how the characters would just randomly drop the f-bomb and whenever they got into an argument, F THIS, F THAT, F YOU MOTHERF'ER, I DON'T WANT F'ING GRILLED CHEESE!

GoT hands down.

I love Game of Thrones but I think the Sopranos, for the first five seasons, was an overall better show.

Count Jerkula said...

Sopranos didn't make their bones on violence and murder then pull back on it, like GOT did with sex and nudity. F U Khaleesi.

Zoe Cialite said...

The Sopranos because of the chemistry between James Gandolfini and Edie Falco. Game of Thrones for the fantastic storytelling that defies predictability. And True Blood for the sexy time.

Seven - Deadwood was awesome. It was cancelled because Milch and HBO wanted to move on to another series that Milch and HBO thought would be huge- John from Cincinnati- remember it?? Didn't think so- it was cancelled the day after its first season ended. Huge fuckup by Milch and HBO. Milch hasn't had a decent show since he let Deadwood die.

John from Cincinnati was terrible.

I've read all the GOT books and am obsessed with the show - love the costume direction. The show leaves out a lot that the book covers so it loses points with me there.

These are two totally different genres and both equally amazing shows. The Sopranos had a lot of crazy shit go down and even though Tony did some fucked up shit you still loved him. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, to be honest.

And I still love Six Feet Under. I think I've watched that show from start to finish about four times now.

Seven of Eleven said...

@texas rose, you're right, I've never heard of John from Cincinnati! Smooth move there, ex-laxer, Deadwood is #8 on the "cancelled too soon" list. Grr, and the "brilliant" 2.5 Manboys is still on the air. :/

@teresa crane, loved Six Feet Under, too! The absolute best series finale ever.

katiekat said...

Sopranos, no question. Not even fucking close. The characters, the writing. It stands the test of time.

Unknown said...

Yeah I love got but nothing can beat tony and carm!

MadLyb said...

Definitely "The Sopranos". It was consistently good (except for the very last episode, which I felt was a copout) and the acting was great all across the board. I agree that GOT has too many storylines, and is so obviously trying to stretch them out as long as possible in hopes that GRRM will get off of his lazy, self-promoting ass and finish writing the last couple books. It's compromising the quality of the series.

I was wrong about, "The Walking Dead". Once I got through the two Governor episodes, it got better. Great cliffhanger!

__-__=__ said...

In Carnivale commentaries the actors seemed surprised it was cancelled after the second season. My guess is Nick Stahl was becoming a problem based on what happened to him after it ended. He was the main character after all.

audrey said...

I am watching season 2 of the Sopranos right now. I have not watched GOT to compare, but there will never be anyone else quite like Tony Soprano. You want to hate him, but there is something so compelling about his character. Great show....and I am sorry I didn't get to watch it sooner.

timebob said...

Deadwood, Rome and Carnivale were victims of bad management in place at HBO at the time. They also passed up Mad Men.

I believe the head of HBO at the time beat up his girlfriend in a parking lot.

He now runs the Starz network, and the Starz series only last 1 or 2 seasons max.

BeckyMae said...

Six Feet Under...hands down, best show eva with Carnivale a close second...

My darling dad was born on the circus route in the Midwest and said that Carnivale was the closest anyone got to portraying what it was actually like...

Is Rome worth watching? I saw the first episode and had a hard time getting into it.

Erik said...

Definitely the Sopranos.

It was a stripper not pregnant. Doesn't make it better but at least be accurate...

Unknown said...

Rome is worth watching. I think it lasted a couple of seasons which is fine. Most of these good series should really only be on two or three years- they usually jump the shark but producers make so much money they just can't help themselves.

@Alabama: Then why did Ralphie kill her. I could have sworn it was because he knocked her up.

And really, stripper who fucks wise guys for gifts and money is different than being a whore? How?

Alita said...

Yup @Kno, but vid piracy did. Maybe if they included bit torrent downloads the stats would tell a different story ;)

Alita said...

He was also in Stargate Atlantis, LowKey. I'd say that he was really good in it except that he wasn't - really wooden. But he was the right look for the role, for sure - a bit primal and dangerous. Maybe he took some acting classes to land GoT (not watched it) ;)

Alita said...

Deadwood was great - I did sort of think it ended at a good time in the story though.

Fun fact - originally they used swear words that were contemporary for the era, but it wound up sounding so silly that they switched to words used today that have the same 'impact' intended.

All the old star words they tried using were blasphemous in nature - so instead of f-this and c-that, they tried damn-this and Jesus-that. Apparently it just looked absurd on camera, so they changed it!
