I thought Gravity was so great, my nerves were shot after!

Has anyone seen Her? The concept scares me.

Jennifer Lawrence has been nominated 3 years in a row now.

Susan said...

Interesting that Joaquin Phoenix got snubbed for Her. I really want to see that. I think it sounds very interesting.

libby said...

I think Leo could handle losing to anyone on that list but Matt Mc.

I SO want Amy Adams to finally win.

I'm sad Joaquin wasn't nominated.

Nominating Julia Roberts is a joke.

I'll bet everybody will flip out that Jonah Hill is now a 2-time nominee. I don't mind him. On film.

Impressed with the fact that 'Jackass' got an Oscar nomination, even if it was for hair and makeup.

What's next? A best actress nomination for Madonna?

I saw Her on Monday (and Nebraska).

I liked it. It is just a small little story that looks at relationships, makes you think all the way home.

Joaquin was excellent.

I'm glad that '20 Feet From Stardom' got a documentary nomination. It's about the great girl-group backup singers of the 1960s and 1970s, and what happened to them when everybody started using Autotune and didn't need backup singers any more.

Henriette said...

I was very surprised Joaquin didn't get nominated, and I hope Matt McC wins. I'm sorry but American Hustle wasn't that great and neither was The Wolf of Wall Street.

libby said...

Alexander Payne is one of my top 3 current favorite directors. But Nebraska is not his best. The acting nominations are right on, though.

Henriette said...

I'm surprised The Butler was ignored and saddened Fruitvale Station didn't get a nomination.

Now! said...

Matt should have won last year for 'Magic Mike'. He was fantastic in that movie - an honest portrayal of an aging hunk.

Now! said...

@Henriette, you're right - Fruitvale was entirely forgotten! I think it came out too early in the year. The Place Beyond the Pines also came out earlier in the year, and was also forgotten, although I though Ryan Gosling was excellent in it.

Henriette said...

I really loved Dallas Buyer's Club. It was so sad yet uplifting at the same time, and Matt and Leto were both superb. Even Garner did a great job, when usually she can be annoying.

I'm glad Judith Densch got a nod for Philomena too.

Alexstrasza said...

I hope Leo wins. He's deserved far more than this one nomination, he's a talented actor. He was very good in The Wolf of Wall Street and I'm happy he finally got his oscar nomination!

Henriette said...

I so hope Meryl Streep doesn't win. She should take herself out of the running like Candice Bergen did with the Emmys. I don't want to see Streep or Julia Roberts win anything.

Susan said...

I'm really rooting for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. Dallas Buyers Club looks great. Matthew M really does throw himself into his roles. He was the only saving grace from that travesty Magic Mike. God. I hated that movie.

That documentary on the backup singers sounds fab. I will keep my eye out for that.

rhinovodka said...

Hated Gravity, American Hustle was ok, although Bale & Adams were fabulous.

Loved the Wolf of Wall Street, Leo was great, probably won't win though.

Looking forward to seeing Her (love Joaquin) & Nebraska.

Never seen a Woody Allen film and don't plan to, so I don't know how Cate's performance was.

Only people I am opposed to winning on this list are Meryl (she's won, give it to someone else), That Hag Julia & Sandra (i didn't think she was that great, ).

I am rooting for Bruce Dern , although I don't know with such strong competitors if he will win.

Henriette said...

I think Bruce Dern will win due to his long body of work. The academy is good about that.

Now! said...

@Susan, the documentary is available on iTunes.

Jason Blue Eyes said...

I'll bet Nicole Kidman feels like an idiot for passing on Gravity now.

Where's the Best score category Enty? John Williams earns his 49th Oscar nom and no mention? At least Hans Zimmer's 12 Years A Slave score wasn't nominated which is nothing more than a Thin Red Line re-hash.

We are now living in a world where Stanley Kubrick never won an Oscar while Jackass gets nominated.

Jessi said...

I saw Her this weekend. I liked it. Joaquin was excellent. Has anyone seen Inside Llweyn Davis? Thoughts, I was thinking of checking it out this weekend.

tara17 said...

Cate Blanchett's performance in Blue Jasmine is incredible, I'm rooting for her.

mynerva said...

It will be hilarious if Matthew McC beats Leo to the Oscar.

If Cate Blanchett doesn't finally get an Oscar I will be pissed off.

Jason Blue Eyes said...

That best actress category is pretty fierce this year. A few weeks ago I would have said it would go to Cate but now I think Amy could take it.

Kristin Wigs said...

@mynerva Cate already has one. All the actress nominees do except for Adams.

Kristin Wigs said...

@Lotta I saw it and loved it. Concept is weird but the story is amazing. Phoenix and Amy Adams were stellar and I totally want a ScarJo in my phone.

Kristin Wigs said...

Wonder if Meryl's speech about Disney's bigotry factored into the Emma, Hanks, Saving Mr Banks snub.

Can't believe Blackfish got locked out by that back up singer doc.

American Hustle is the one to beat. Pitt better pick up his game.

Michael H said...

Sandra Bullock should get best panting in a major motion picture--it seemed like all her acting was breath work.

Also, I got shot one station away from Fruitvale (Coliseum) at 10:30 in the morning. Oakland is no joke. I haven't been able to bring myself to see the movie yet tho.

Habibti said...

I hope Leo gets the best actor award. He has been so close several times and is a brilliant actor!

Unknown said...

My favorite nomination is JACKASS. I hope they're seated next to Meryl at the nominee luncheon.
Nebraska was meh. Big deal in the my hometown because the screenwriter is a homeboy. But I found it to be uniformly uninteresting.

Maybe if someone took a baseball bat to Bruce derns junk.... that would have elevated it.

LottaColada said...

@Kristin, I'll withhold criticism until I see it, thanks for the feedback! And I want a ScarJo phone too!

mynerva said...

Sorry, meant leading actress as opposed to supporting.

Jazzy said...

Between the Jonah Hill nom for playing himself in the 80's, no Idris, a set up repeat win for JLaw and Ellen hosting, I won't have to watch the show at all. Thank you Academy!!!

Fruitvale was a superior movie to Nebraska. Oh well.

lazyday603 said...

Jonah Hill has 2 Oscar nominations already. That must infuriate all the people who hate Jonah Hill.

sandybrook said...

Imma sticking with my pledge to NEVER see another movie again if Leo wins Best Actor Oscar. Go Matthew!! (Cant believe I just said that but it worked for AnnE when she starved down for a role.)

Boring - it reads much like the Golden Globes nominations list

califblondy said...

I didn't get more than 10 minutes of Magic Mike and I pressed the stop button.

Kristin Wigs said...

@califblondy you are doing yourself a disservice as a woman. There are butts for every interest.

Sis said...

While the performances were pretty good in American Hustle, I didn't think it was that good of a movie.

I am also surprised The Butler wasn't nominated.

Momster said...

I was surprised that Tom Hanks wasn't nominated for Capt Phillips, Thought he'd be a shoo-in.

nurysp said...

im all for Leo winning best actor he was amazing. Flat out amazing.
Matt should have won for Magic Mike

skimpymist said...

Why did jonah turd hill get nominated. Jeesh his ego went from epic to colossal. Ugh and wolf of wall street sucks. I hope matthew wins and leo loses. He can go cry his loss away in some supermodels vagina.

katz101 said...

What about idris elba?!

JenX said...

Blackfish was robbed!

feraltart said...

We often don't get to see some movies until after the Academy Awards. Having written that, I really enjoyed Gravity & American Hustle. They have started True Detective here in Australia & Matthew Mc is incredible. He was also great in Magic Mike. A group of girlfriends & I went to see Magic Mike & we were impressed there was a plot.

ninotchka said...

What about ROBERT FUCKING REDFORD?!? He's been robbed - ROBBED.

Fuck Leo - go McBongo or Chiwetel or Dern as a nod to his body of work. Hell, even Bale - he was fabulous in American Hustle.

Cate's a lock and it's about time they did more than give her a consolation best supporting Oscar. Sorry Amy Adams, I loved American Hustle but no. Meryl was godawful in Osage County. Sandra's a nice girl but hardly in Cate's league as an actress. Judi Dench probably deserves it as much as Cate but I doubt she'll get it.

Oprah - DENIED! Yay. I wouldn't mind JLaw taking it but I'd prefer a Lupita Nyong'o win. Julia sucked in Osage County. Sally Hawkins was great but no and June Squibb is honored just to be nominated.

Leto will probably take it although Michael Fassbender has been robbed in the past and they make up for that with consolation best supporting Oscars sometimes. Jonah Hill can blow me, I'm certainly not going to blow him.

Best Picture - 12 Years A Slave. Best Director - Steve McQueen. The Academy likes to pretend it's more than a popularity contest. It isn't and David O'Dickhead has a lot of enemies.

Don't let me commence on Foreign Language films and Documentaries.

Alexa Rose said...

Yawn, mostly the same boring actors and actresses are nominated.

Alvin said...

I want Sandra to win.

Hegg said...

I seriously do not get the Sandra Bullock nom. It was BARELY any acting at all. So weird.
I mean, I like her. But if you saw the movie and watch a lot of movies, there was barely any acting going on really. Voice acting, sure.
The "supporting" categories are always tough, I find. There are just way too many excellent performances to nominate.

Red said...

Bullock again shows she can do the breathy-panic voice as she did in both Speeds. Not nom-worthy, to me.

Blanchette's acting was amazing-slight & very subtle facial expression changes told entire chapters without words. Shows what a great actress without botox can do.

Meryl's Disney references had nothing to do with Mr Banks outcome - votes were already in.

McConaughey fans need to see "Mud" & we've got True Detective here on premium cable - just started last week.

>Michael H - I hope you're fully recovered from your injury. Terrible! I'm in SF & I fear Oakland. Don't go there anymore & won't see Fruitvale. Didn't see Milk either, since I felt like I already lived through it.

VeeBee said...

I'm shocked American Hustle DIDN'T get nominated for best hair & makeup. Seriously. While I was watching it I was thinking, "each one of these godawful hairdos deserves its own individual Oscar."
