The Dangers Of Reporting

When CBS reporter was detained by the Egyptian military and then released after a day of captivity and returned to the US, I thought she would stay home and recover. Instead she took the next plane right back to Cairo. When the Egyptian President stepped down, Lara was in the street and during the melee, was beaten and sexually assaulted. Right in the middle of all of the chaos a sexual assault was taking place and the people with her were helpless to stop it. I feel so awful for Lara and admire her courage for discussing it and for going back to do her job even after what she went through originally. Her situation is not isolated, but because she is a reporter for a network her story is out there and I also thank all the people who did finally step in and save her.

I pretty much dare someone to come at me like that. Probably be one of the last things they do.

Good for her for getting through it.

I'm so sorry this happened to her, but am very curious as to how she was assaulted. Was she groped? Sodomized? I don't mean to be morbid, but I am curious (same characteristic that keeps me coming back to this gossip site.) And hooray for the women who stepped in and saved her!

Momster said...

Can't imagine what she went through. I hope those that assaulted her will be punished.

parissucksliterally said...

Audrey, i am curious too, because she was not raped....however, what a horrible experience. I hope she heals inside......

Ice Angel said...

I am really surprised the press is reporting that she was sexually assaulted. Don't they usually refrain from releasing that information? Particularly when the person is a public figure. I am guessing she allowed the information to be made public.

amoteafloat said...

Very eloquent and compassionate post, Enty. Thank you.

*Ahem.* Uh, not to be *too* snarky, but whenever a tragic topic arises and people make cocky comments like "if someone did that to ME," it always bugs me. It seems to indicate that you pity this woman for her physical ~weakness~-- or, it's as if you think you can summon superhero strength and automatically fight your way out of a similar situation.

What Logan endured is unimaginable. I'd say that most of us have no clue what it's like to be *THAT* helpless among a mob, and I'm entirely sure that you'd be just as powerless if you were targeted by several men twice your size.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

You might as well have directed that to me, amoteafloat, instead of pussy footing around.

And yeah, I think I'd be fine because I have the RAGE inside of me that is just dying to get out. Not saying she's weak, I'm saying I'm angry.

MommaSaid said...

Horrific. She is a a brave woman for wanting not to let this bring her down. Prayers of stregnth and healing to you and your family Ms. Logan.

Sue Ellen - while I don't doubt for a second that you'd kick some ass, I think it's a different situation when you're being essentially gang raped. There's only so much 1 person (and lets face it - she's a petite gal) can do against a mob of men. I hardly think she decided to just lay down and take it, know what I mean?

tracyh said...

Mob mentality is one of the only things that scares me.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

@Carrie

Oh I fully see the point, and if I was being held at gun point I probably wouldn't be able to do too much, but short of that I will fight for my life not to be raped, so they better be fighting with all their life too. That's all I'm saying.

I'm not saying a word about her, this is all about me and what I (hope) I would be able to do.

bluebonnetmom said...

If the description of a sustained sexual assault and beating is not the description of a gang rape I do not know what is. The perps should burn in Hell for what they did to her. I am very grateful to the women and Egyptian Soldiers who rushed in and saved her. They are the heroes here.

Brutal. In an environment as unstable as the one Lara was in, I don't think any of us could say what we could have or would have been able to do. Amazing that she's discussing it - kudos to those who helped!

I'm always amazed at any reporter that puts their life on the line like that. What a brave woman. I watched a few hours of the coverage the day the President stepped down & I remember thinking you could not pay me to do any reporting in that large a crowd. I thought they'd said it was relatively peaceful?

Mooshki said...

Aw, Enty, this kind of post is why I love you. So many people are playing 'blame the victim' over this, and you got it exactly right. ♥

BlahFrickinBlah said...

What a horrible experience for her. I hope she can truly carry on because as much as you might march ahead, that kind of thing has quite an imprint on your mind whether you want it to or not. God bless those people who saved her. That is so scary that a frenzy like that makes men turn to rape. So sick.

I know they are not releasing the details of what exactly happened for a reason, and that doesn't really need to be published. However, by not saying what happened leads me to think the worst, and I hope that wasn't the case. You know what I mean.

I was raped. And I stopped fighting back because I realized that he would kill me if I didn't stop defending myself. He proved it several times by choking me. I let him get his way and I got to live. Fighting back isn't always the best way to go.

I’m very sorry that this happened to this lady. I do hope this is a wakeup call to the wacko liberals along with a totally bought in media. These people hate the US and Obama showed just how totally unfit for being President he was with his immature comments about his being President would solve all this hatred towards the US.

The US and that includes the media need to understand that hatred and get the heck out of there.
No more mosques. No more support for these terrorists unless they will publically denounce the Koran.

As a recovering, repurposed journalist who knows war correspondents and once (briefly) considered it before the stories of being chased out of the country with gunfire sunk in, there are journalists across the globe who face these kind of dangers every day. It is part and parcel of the job, though of course highly undesirable!

I'm praying for a swift recovery (both physically and mentally) for Lara Logan and every journalist in the world whose calling takes them into the line of fire!!!!!!!

Melody the First said...

@cowbulls, you must be a troll. No one reading Enty's blog could be that ignorant.

This country has millions of peaceful Muslims and mosques. The US founding fathers understood the value of the Koran in relation to other religious works. To hate all Muslims because of the violent extremist factions would be like hating all Christians because of Tim McVeigh.

ice angel - me too. fighting back only brought on incessant beating, multiple broken bones (resulting in reconstructive surgery on my face), and a gun to my back.

Nir Rosen should have been fired and not allowed to resign. He doesn't have the balls to do the job that Lara Logan does. Logan is incredibly brave and I hope she recovers quickly.

Like Sue Ellen I'm also filled with rage (for various and assorted reasons) and I have to say that when people are whipped into a frenzy it can be terrifying. I know I'm going to sound like a pussy compared to Lara Logan, but I was almost crushed to death at a concert and clawed my way out and at the time it was the scariest fucking moment of my life. It was hot, I could barely move or breathe, I was carried away in a crowd with my feet not touching the floor, and this was at a concert at a fucking fairgrounds! Several people were trampled and hospitalized. I know, nothing compared to a war zone but pretty scary at the time.

@ Melody the First - I concur. I never understood the global hatred of muslims b/c of a some radicals. There are bad seeds in every walk of life. Where is the outrage at the Catholic priests that have raped kids in their charge for the last 60 years?

@ Ice Angel and Juicy - I was raped after someone drugged me when I only 15. I was so debilitated I could not fight back. For many yrs, I couldnt be intimate (emotionally or physically) for a longtime thereafter. Sometimes having rage in you is not enough to help you fight back. HUGS TO BOTH OF YOU.

Ice Angel said...

@Borg and Juicy-wow...thanks for sharing and thanks so much to all for the positive comments. Mine happened many years ago, but it will never leave me. But it hasn't destroyed me. It sounds like there are many survivors out there and I know that we all wish Lara a speedy recovery. It sounds like she is quite the tough cookie and will move past this and on with her life.

I know many of us want to blame the country of Egypt and Muslims, etc...but that isn't quite clear what happened. We do know there were hired thugs out to harm reporters. We do know of mob mentality. This type of thing has been known to happen in all parts of the world, not just there. The sad thing is that many of these people will probably go unpunished. It sounds like there were just as many good decent people to help her if not more than the horrible people who harmed her.

This woman is my hero, for allowing the facts of her attack be made public. I have a feeling she will become a crusader to woman (and men) who have been victims of rape to come forward and not be ashamed of what horrible people did to you. They are the ones who need to be shamed and put away.

I have a friend who went to The American University in Cairo and from her stories of being groped and leered at (while her husband was present) brought to light how huge of an issue sexual assualt is there.

libby said...

There is a prejudice in very conservative parts of the world that Western women are very very whorish. I had a good friend who traveled many of the poorer parts of the world, but always, always with a male friend. Despite his presence, she reported that (I forget the town) in rural India, some men would approach her in broad daylight and grab her by the VAG! Or boobs. Or try to get her to walk off with them. Mind-blowing.

LL definitely stood out in that crowd in Cairo. And studies have proven that it only takes one or two instigators to get lots of normally good guys to participate.

I've never liked LL, but I'm really proud that she isn't hiding or ashamed that she was a victim of this crime.

DON'T KNOW IF IT 'S TRUE OR MATTERS BUT PEOPLE FROM HER CAMP ARE NOW SAYING RAPE DID NOT OCCUR. bad assault of sexual nature, that can include groping while being hit.

juicy said...

so maybe they didn't rape her by penetration, but what about forced fellatio, maybe penetration by a finger or object? just because it wasn't penetration by a penis (to me) doesn't mean it isn't rape.
imho, of course.

To all of those who posted their experiences my thoughts are with you
and Lara. I don't think we will know what exactly happened to her, nor do the exact details matter. She was just doing her job when she was assaulted. She is lucky to be alive, and I wish her a full emotional, mental, and physical recovery as soon as possible.

libby said...

My guess is that if she wasn't raped, she was probably beaten, stripped, groped, and maybe even photographed being assaulted.

The key word in the press release was 'prolonged.' So that's what I imagine happened.

shakey said...

Very interesting posts. To all who have suffered, thank God you're with us and thank you so much for sharing.

Sue Ellen, I realize you're young but I do hope you understand when you make tough statements like that it can come across in a ... how do I put it ... more narrow-minded way. We get it, you're tough and you don't put up with shit, but things aren't black and white. I hope you took the survivors' comments to heart.

Okay, that being said this is what pisses me off about this situation: When Muslim women are accused of having affairs or pre-marital sex, they're stoned to death or their fathers take out honour killings on them. Yet Muslim men can do whatever they want without recrimination. These men will go unpunished and that is reprehensible.

Thankfully Lara survived and I wish her nothing but the best.

libby said...

Btw, Lutefisk, ITA the details don't matter, but as a woman I think there is a morbid obsession with the possibilities.
I mean, I lived in a city alone for 20 years, I parked in a parking garage every day for 10 years---I always have had to be somewhat vigilant while just trying to live my life.

I think every woman imagines 'worst-case-scenarios' once in awhile, personally it keeps me more on my toes.

the lutefisk said...

Libby, I agree with you 100% as a woman. However, I also respect her privacy. If she was raped, which I hope was not the case, if and when she is ready I am sure it will be shared as a news item. Whatever was done to her, hopefully it was the least horrible of the things we are all imagining, it was done against her will. Even a grope is assault. My heart goes out to her.

I feel for Lara, after the attack she suffered in Egypt she is being attacked all over again by some at home. This is the plight of so many sexual assault victims, that keeps so many from coming forward and it is just as shameful as the original attack in my opinion.

Thank you to our survivors here who have come forward, not just today but in previous items in the past. I admire your strength and willingness to be so frank with the rest of us. Your words give us just a little bit more education on a situation that we only think we can understand, but never really will.

Lara Logan was not the only woman assaulted by the thugs that day, or even that week. Instead of pointing fingers of blame at one religion or culture, it would be nice if some of these outraged public voices could be used to draw more attention to the victims that will not benefit from the incredible support system that Lara has. My thoughts are with the women in Egypt who must suffer alone, shamed, for something that is absolutely not their fault.

Peace.

Same to the various nitwits who want to speculate about the details, was it really rape or just being stripped and groped and, wait for it, possibly photographed. Gosh, was she groped, sodomozied???? Inquiring narrow little pitiful minds want to know. Seriously, take a look at yourselves.

And who the hell takes this opportunity to say they don't like this woman who got assaulted. Reak nice timing. Kind of like this Nit Rosen creature and his super hilarious and not at all inappropriate commentary. Hateful people out themselves.

Speaking of which, here's what the angry mob shouted as they were assaulting her: "Jew Jew Jew."

chihuahuense said...

@amartel, etc-If you go back and read what Sue Ellen said, then look at how you responded, you will see (or probably won't) how disproportionately crazy your response is. I get it, apparently talking about this subject is a sore spot for you, but she did not say anything that outlandish to elicit personal attacks. You need to take that rage and do something constructive with it, because tearing others down will not make you feel better in the long run.

Wow you guys! Just wow! I wish men would stop this everywhere. It's just not right. I'm glad she's alive. I wouldn't consider going over there ever. I'm not giving my money to any country that would treat me poorly just because I'm a woman. Just wow!

lzahart said...

To those who have commented that they have suffered through sexually-motivated crimes- my most sincere sadness that this had to occur to you and that this is so prevalent in our own society let alone elsewhere, but I am so so happy to hear that you are doing well and have been able to move on with your lives (albeit after some much needed healing time).

To the person who says what they would have done- I can't personally speak for being in a mob in a country in turmoil in the Middle East, but I have travelled there for work, and as others have pointed out it is an extremely hostile environment for women. I never left my hotel floor without a male colleague with me, let alone walk outside by myself, I had heard way too many stories about Western businesswomen alone in the ME/NA being intimidated, assaulted or raped. The implicit assumption I gathered in Morocco, Egypt, and Libya was that if you are a solo woman, particularly Western and/or on the street past 6pm, you are assumed to be a prostitute and therefore its ok to do whatever. That is the reality of what it feels like over there as the other commenter who went to American U in Cairo mentioned. So I think the person who thinks they would kick a$$ with all their rage needs to sit down and be realistic about what you would have capacity to do in that kind of environment separated from your colleagues and in the midst of a mob on the brink of overthrowing a 30+ year old dictatorship, because asserting what you would have done is essentially saying that it could have been handled differently or better-- and I just don't think you can make a judgment like that objectively.

To the person who thinks all Muslims are terrorists and should be made to reject the Koran, their sacred and holy spiritual text, please find another forum to voice your views. I think I speak for at least 80% of us here in that there are better places for you to voice these views that would be more amenable to your line of thinking.

Here's hoping Lara recovers quickly, she is an amazing and insightful journalist who has already taken enough sh&t for her personal life and the last thing she needs is for random on the internet to be second-guessing her actions or saying what "they would have done".

Mooshki said...

Oh, and Sue Ellen, to put it in more simple terms so you can understand - the reason Amartel and a lot of the rest of us are so pissed is because the implication of what you said is that it was Lara's fault she was attacked, because she didn't fight back hard enough. That's called "blaming the victim," and not only is it an incredibly shitty thing to do to someone who's been attacked, it's also dangerous, because some of the time fighting back will get you killed.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

You know that with grade inflation, half of all people have an 85% grade average, right? And that being good at standardized tests doesn't necessarily reflect general intelligence, right? You may not be a complete moron, but you're not exactly exceptionally bright.

Not that you'll believe me, but I know people who have done business with Enty, so I know he is exactly who he says he is. And when I went to Cali last year, he invited me to come visit him, but I was too busy with family to go to LA, so I'm not quite as obsessed with Enty as you seem to think I am. I guess it would be hard for you to understand the concept of "friendship" since I doubt you have many real friends.

Oh, and nice passive-aggressive self-promotion, telling people to go back and search out your "clever" theories.

There you go, Sue Ellen, throwing your education in again. You may be book smart but you need to learn some social mores. We're not "talking crazy". It came across as callous.

btw, I'm sure you're not the only person working towards a university degree who reads this site.

Why should I bother, eh? You really don't give a fuck who you piss off. I remember reading that post of yours that got deleted off the comments. It came up in my inbox. Remember that rather morose posting about how hard it was for you growing up (which I'm sure it was, no sarcasm implied) then you told us we could all go fuck ourselves? Yet you come back and post.

Whatever. Stay ignorant.

Okay. Just wondering: does EVERYthing/topic/post eventually veer back towards you and your endlessly-interesting opinions and rants and whatnot, Sue Ellen? I don't think you're stupid, technically, but your narcissism is palpable -- and, honestly, you're not as articulate, fascinating, or humorous as your staggering arrogance has led you to believe.

Did you GET the jist behind the emotion of this post? How a woman was sexually assaulted? And did you notice when a few CDANers came forward and told their own tales of attack and survival? Hell naw. You just continued to pound home some point of being too badass to "let" someone overpower you. I'm REASONABLY SURE that every woman feels a sense of utter rage as she's being raped. Do you truly, honestly think that *your* ire renders you invincible? Are you *that* special? Because that IS stupid.

P.S. You got into law school. Whoopdeeshit. I'm sure there are *maybe* three readers out there who are impressed by that, though, so keep telling us. Maybe you can post a link to your transcript or something, just to *really* prove yourself?

I've met more than one person with the I.Q. of a pop tart who bought his/her way into some mid-tier J.D. program. Then again, if you really *are* a lawyer, hubris will probably only help you succeed in your profession. So whatever. Happy trails.

P.P.S. Speaking of lawyers, since you obviously think Enty is a big ol' sack of lol-worthy mendacious horseshit, why do you even visit this site? Since you're such a scintillating person, start your own blog and make up your own lies. I know chihuahuasense (whatever) will read it, at least.

Sue Ellen, you know that one definition of crazy is repeating the same act over and over, but expecting a different result? Well, most people here do not care about your vendetta against Enty, so please stop trying to convince everyone that you're right about everything. It's pathetic how desperate you are to have people agree with you.

I did go to your blog to check out what you were talking about, and I realized I need to change something I said - I know Enty is a male lawyer, but I don't know for certain that he is an entertainment lawyer. See, I do have an open mind, and I think Pinky & Mistik are actually know what they're talking about, unlike so many of the other people who claim to know "the truth" about Enty. I do think it's sad that in your blog Mistik explains that she(?) and Enty had a difference in opinion over her script, while her post in the Radio thread made it sound like Enty was straight out scamming her.

One more thing from your blog, Sue Ellen. You say "It's so hard to find people you like." Let me give you a hint - it's a lot easier if you don't spend so much time hanging around people you "don't e-like" as you so eloquently put it.

chihuahuense said...

who gives a fuck if you think SEM's posts are vapid and who gives a fuck if I tell someone they are awesome?!~I mean, besides you of course, because you like to fucking regulate what everyone has to say?

That's what you have against me? Seriously? WTF, you need to get over it. I tell people they are awesome all the time. And I like to laugh. And I DO think it is fucking disgusting how people on here act sometimes. And? What?

Because of that I need to go somewhere else? Fuck you. Grow the fuck up. You can't control how other people think. I try not to be disrespectful to others, but I will defend myself or others if I think they are being shit on.

You've obviously been harboring this since I asked why you created that website for anyone to go if they questioned why EL was asking for money, since I have never done shit to you before.

amoteafloat said...

Yeah. I made the mistake of looking at her blog too, Mooshki. You know a person who thinks it's uproarious when elderly people fall out of their wheelchairs is just a stand-up, totally empathetic human being.

I stopped reading it after that classy little anecdote. But from what I can tell, her blog suffers from the very worst literary crime of all: it's both terribly boring AND terribly written.

Mooshki said...

LOL, I don't even remember your asking me about that. In fact, it occurred to me a little while ago that it was dumb for me to bother creating that blog - it would be much better to encourage people to go to Sue Ellen's blog when they want to bitch.

I apologize, I shouldn't have made that comment to you. It was very childish of me. Apart from your blind support for Sue Ellen, who I find to be a very destructive person, I don't have any problem with you. Obviously, I'm in a bitchy mood, and you got caught in the crossfire. I'm sorry for that.

Mooshki said...

Oh, and I may be shitting on Sue Ellen, but she sure as hell asked for it, although she's too blind to get why.

shakey said...

amoteafloat - I love you.

There have been many times when her narcissism has actually caused me enough stress that I had to stop coming on CDAN and/or stop commenting in case she commented. I'm guessing other people have felt the same way. This time it was too much.

If she stuck to statements about being Nancy Drew, that's enough, because that's hilarious.

Mooshki said...

Shakey, she's driven me away a number of times, but eventually I miss the other awesome peeps here too much, so I come back. :)

jax said...

alright then...

FYI just wanted to say my comment about whether she was "raped" or not was referring to the story being current & FACTUAL,not to define what is less horrible.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

I don't care what any of you think about me cause I know what I know about me and that's it.

Like me, don't like me whatever.

But now I'm not going to be polite to you fucks anymore.

Done.

Mooshki said...

Um, when exactly were you ever "polite?" That's a joke, right?

"I don't care what any of you think about me..."

If only that were true, it'd be a lot easier for you and for the rest of us.

amoteafloat said...

Yeah. I'm trying to think of instances in which Sue Ellen has displayed any consideration or decorum on this site, and I'm at a loss.

LOL at people who threaten strangers over the 'net. Feeling tough and bold behind that keyboard, right? No more being ''polite,'' huh? Channel all that aforementioned rage, Ally McBatshit. I'm not intimidated by you, and I don't see why anyone else would be, either. too.

amoteafloat said...

*Oh, and SE, before you ridicule that last ''too'' -- I'm typing from my phone, and that superfluous word slipped in somehow. Whatevs. Besides, I could crap out an entire dissertation of typos and it would still be more readable than your mean-spirited, pathetic little blog.

And now, I AM done with you -- until you come at me in another thread. I'm sure you'll make me chortle, at the very least.

May the truth be told said...

Enty is a fraud. For those interested I've dug up the links to old (controversial) posts:

Oh, Jesus DOGSHIT.

Hey, I have a great idea for some of you: focus on some of the REAL LIFE problems affecting humanity, instead of your puny attempts to discredit this website. GOD. Does it EVER get tiresome? For fuck's sake.

I've got a great example of an actual, serious issue, and it all goes back to the original idea of this post: women are often the targets of sexual violence, and this fact should never be tolerated by anyone, anywhere. Go. Discuss. Come back with your fucking research.

MCH said...

^amotefloat - Your last post gave me a good giggle. ITA!! :)

KLM said...

I just checked back on this thread to see what's going on and I am totally amazed at the timing of the mystery poster's links to ahem, "controversial" posts. I wonder who could have possibly posted?!! It must be someone with super-human strength and the superior intelligence to out-wit us all! It must be someone who clearly doesn't care what any of us think about them, and doesn't have the time to point others in the direction of said posts.

All joking aside, I don't understand why there has to be any controversy about who the writer of this blog is... I just don't. I come here, I read entertaining things, I post, whatever. I don't give the writer money because that's not what I chose to do with my money. But I also don't give a shit if he/she asks for money, much less would I be hell-bent on exposing the writer as a fraud. It's an entertainment blog. Who cares? It's fun.

amoteafloat said...

KLM -- EXACTLY!!!

amoteafloat: Hey, I have a great idea for some of you: focus on some of the REAL LIFE problems affecting humanity

Oh yes, that's why you're on a blog site that might not even post facts; just gossip.

Go get a life instead of insulting people who have intelligence.

In regards to why people question Enty's identity, people who frequent a gossip site such as this would of course be curious - why wouldn't they be? We're constantly guessing the subjects of blinds, so why wouldn't anyone be curious about Enty? Especially if he's asking readers for money.

Mooshki said...

amoteafloat, will you marry me? ;)

Neko said...

@"truth"- "Go get a life instead of insulting people who have intelligence." possibly the rudest and most disrespectful thing I have read in a while.

I'm sorry, I am a frequent reader/less-frequent poster who made a comment a while upthread about the actual topic of this-- Lara's attack. I really find it irritating that when I went back and looked and the resulting comments there was nothing about the attack but instead an all-out feud btwn 2 very clearly drawn sides. This feud has kept me from commenting on CDAN in the past because I find it so negative and unpleasant. I have no doubt others feel the same way. I have to deal with enough stressful sh*t in my own life both at home and at work, this site is a stress reliever for me not something that should make me feel slightly nauseous and voyeuristic reading.

That being said- the lame posts from "Truth" and whatever fake name was used to post the "controversial" links, Sue Ellen, this is all clearly you. I have no idea who you are but based on what I have read here you certainly would not be partner or even associate material at my firm. You talk a big game and a lot of sh*t but don't seem to have your facts correct (for example, you mentioned that gov’t lawyers start at a salary over $100k which is beyond ignorant and wrong and if you are attending a law school that tells you that, you should look into transferring). I can't believe you would bring up your GPA or LSATs, no one cares, I have no doubt that many of us are just as smart if not smarter than you and had better GPAs/LSATs than you but don't feel the need to advertise it, and trust me that you are neither that smart or that special. I agree with others please focus your kick-ass rage elsewhere and stop poisoning an otherwise harmonious community of online folks who just need a break from the day to day monotony of our lives.

And a final piece of advice SE: you may want to consider sticking to the backwoods and not coming and playing in major markets w the big boys and girls at the Tier 1 firms. We don't play nice with people like you and you would be fired/de-equitized in no time if the true colors you so proudly fly via your comments here were ever shown.

Moosh/amotea/others- I've got your back.

Mooshki said...

"Go get a life instead of insulting people who have intelligence."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!

Thanks for the laugh, I needed that.

Who isn't curious about Enty, but there's a big difference between being curious and being obsessive about it.

Think of Enty like your local homeless person - they ask you for money, and you know they're probably going to buy booze with it, but it's entirely up to you if you want to give money to them or not, so just think of it as a minor annoyance and move on.

Oops, sorry, I got dragged in again. I keep trying to rescue that poor horse, even though it's been long dead, but people keep digging up its corpse to give it some more kicks.

lzahart said...

Sorry that last comment from "Neko" was actually from me, I forgot I was logged into my husband's gmail. I'm not afraid to hide behind my keyboard under a fake name.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

This is the last comment I will write on this. I never posted under a fake name to post those links. That's pathetic. If I have something to say, I have no problem posting under my name.

Just cause some of you have to resort to that, doesn't mean everyone does.

So continue on calling me what you want to call me and making crazy accusations. It fits.

Mooshki said...

Thanks for the support, Neko, and apologies to you and to anyone else who came here to comment about the original topic.

I know it's disrespectful to the people who came here to comment about the attack, and especially to the people who were brave enough to share their personal stories. I just was so infuriated by what Sue Ellen said, I couldn't let it go, and of course once I address her directly, there's a 100% guarantee it's going to degenerate into another sandbox fight.

I know how sick everyone must be of this feuding - that's why I waited until the next day to get into it. I figured most of the normal people would have moved on, so we kooks wouldn't cause them too much misery. :)

As a general rule, it's best not to go back into the comments any later than early evening after a day's posts. The nasties and crazies usually come out after dark.

Mooshki said...

"Just cause some of you have to resort to that, doesn't mean everyone does."

Um, you do realize that the only person using a fake name in this discussion was one of your supporters? I'd be a little less snotty or you're going to lose them too.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

Hey Mooshk,

What is the big deal about what I said anyway? I never wished anything on her, or fist pumped the fact that she was abused. I just read the post and thought about what I would do in that situation, and I think I would fight to the death of me. What is so wrong about posting what I think? Everyone else does, why is it a problem when I do?

No meanness here, just straight talk.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

I don't care if I have supporters or not. I just care about what I think.

Maybe they don't want to post under their name cause they don't want to be called names. Some people are weaker than others and wouldn't be able to deal with all this.

Mooshki said...

Okay, feud aside, you said that you thought you'd be "fine" because you'd fight back so hard that they'd back off. By saying that, you're implying that if Lara had fought back harder, she could have avoided this.

"Blaming the victim" isn't about straight-out saying "it was her fault." Almost no one would say that. It's about saying that there was something she could have done to avoid what happened. It's pretty much the same as saying "if she hadn't been wearing a short skirt, it wouldn't have happened."

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

I don't know if they'd back off, but I'd like to think I'd be fine in that I could hold my own.

But I was never thinking of me being in her shoes at any point. I was thinking of me coming home at 3in the morning and being attacked in an alley here in Toronto. I think about what I would do in that scenario all the time, just in case.

I'm sorry if people thought that I was blaming her, but I wasn't and I'm not.

And when people put in their personal stories about rape, or abuse or what have you, what am I suppoed to say? Sorry you got raped? That's pretty awkward.

Mooshki said...

Yes, it is awkward, but it's a good place to start. A simple "I'm sorry a bad thing happened to you" is a good way to express sympathy without judgment.

May I recommend a shriek alarm for those dark alleys? They have small ones that you can put on your key chain, and a really loud noise at 3am is a good way to get people's attention. People may be too jerky to call the cops if someone needs help, but they'll sure as heck do it if it's affecting their sleep.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

I don't think I'll ever be able to say that to someone unless I knew them. I also think it should go without saying that you're sorry that someone got raped, especially woman to woman.

Also, I don't think I'd be that o.k if I were to get raped. Part of me thinks that I'd rather be dead than that broken, which I would be. That's why I said I'd fight with my life cause I might be willing to give it up.

amoteafloat said...

"And when people put in their personal stories about rape, or abuse or what have you, what am I suppoed to say? Sorry you got raped? That's pretty awkward."

Yes, actually. That is EXACTLY what you should say. Nothing more, nothing less. No bravado, no imagined scenarios. Just "I'm sorry that happened to you." I guess they just don't teach compassion in law school -- or maybe some people just never have it in the first place. Who knows?

Izahart, I love you even more now that I know your husband's screenname is NEKO. Are you kidding? Are you utterly perfect, or what? Neko Case is like my personal God(dess).

amoteafloat said...

"Part of me thinks that I'd rather be dead than that broken"

Do you have ANY idea what an asshole you are? Really?

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

Oh and no one in Toronto would even wake up to that. Even in the nicest neighbourhoods, you're bound to hear something sketchy in the middle of the night.

I was thinking of taking krav maga. Really fuck a fool up.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

Who's talking to you? No one. So fucking jam it and gtfo.

amoteafloat said...

I'M talking to YOU, Sue Ellen, you fucking sociopathic moron. Do you REALLY think of yourself as some vastly powerful person with an imposing intellect? Do you REALLY think people are afraid of you?

Telling me to shut up and "jam it," as you so eloquently put it, isn't going to make me back down. Are you kidding?

I'd verbally fight you all goddamned day, but I've got soup to cook and trails to wander and things to consider other than your ignorance. So good luck to you, you little twatwart. You obviously make friends everywhere you go, and are a big success/winner. Go pat yourself on the back some more for being endlessly clueless.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

Great.

Go do whatever it is you have to do.

Huzzah

lzahart said...

@amoteaofloat- thx for the compliment but I would certainly not claim perfection. But I do have a bulldog named Neko who is named after Ms. Case hence my hubby's screen name.

And thanks to both you and Mooshki for giving me an education in how nuts people can get... I will certainly take to heart the notion that the crazies come out at night and that is not why I'm commenting here- I'm commenting here for fun, not for mean-spirited jabs such as the lovely one SE just directed at you. Good to know that not everyone out there is batsh&t. I'm officially over this and have a deal to close-- see you on more sane posts soon Moosh and Amotea!

glad i didn't fight to the death of me. i'm SO glad i'm alive. i LOVE my life.

Juicy, I'm so happy that you're loving life right now. What a vivacious person you are! :-) Many hugs to you, and all the other survivors, too. <3

P.S. Anyone with a bulldog named after my favorite chanteuse is a great gal! :-)

See ya later, Izahart/Neko. I think you wrote the wisest comment in this whole histrionic post, and I look forward to reading your words elsewhere.

P.P.S. And Mooshki? You and I go waaaaay back, doll. Like, back in ye olde days of Molly and Cl@s$alpha! We can easily weather another trollstorm. ;-)

Mooshki said...

Thanks, Juicy, that's really inspiring!

Amote, heck, I haven't even had someone threaten to kill me in the last year or two. Those were the days...
