When I saw that Kendall Jenner got a $90,000 care for her 16th birthday I realized that is setting the bar kind of high for Kyle when she turns 16 and I also thought about why a 16 year old would even need a $90,000 car. If you had the money would you buy your 16 year old a $90,000 car or make them drive something less expensive for awhile?

If I had the money, I would give them a $90,000 car when they turned 25 IF they had a spotless driving record and IF they could be trusted in other parts of their life.

No way...it's not even the money...well maybe it is, but since they have so much money to burn maybe they'd do better teaching some values.

I don't have kids but I have a nephew I love a lot and if it was a $90K car that I could afford and it was so expensive because of safety features (like Volvo or something), I'd spend it. Otherwise, sorry, kid, you get the Lexus hand-me-down LOL
I'm going to make my kid go halfsies with me when it comes time to buy a car. If they can save 45,000 and they want to put it on a car, then they can have a 90,000 car, but I'd probably convince them to put that money on a house. ;)

I told my kids they need to contribute towards insurance and payments. I truely believe that when one has to make the sacrafice for something, that "something" holds more value and they take it seriously.

Honestly, I think it's revolting. I don't care how much money you have or whether the car was comped, a sixteen year old has no business driving a $90,000 car. What are you teaching that child then about values and saving for something that you really want?
I'm not saying this because my parents didn't buy me a car, and I do realize that today, almost every kid whose parents can afford it, does buy them a car, but really?

My whole house only cost $84,000, so I can't even fathom buying a car that cost so much. My daughter can drive my van when she turns 16 and get a job and pay for her own if it isn't good enough.
Hell no, unless they had done something super spectacular to earn it. They get a Honda with the best safety features available, and a parental lock at 80 mph. Their second car is whatever they can afford to buy on their own. If I had 90,000 to piss away on a child's gift, I would rather they use it to travel and learn something about people and cultures as different from their own as they could possibly be.
A 16 year old girl has no business in a high profile car which can so easily roll over. I know how I drove at 16 and I'm lucky I didn't roll my VW. I'd think some LEXUS would be more her speed, and safer, but I know egos come into play & they prolly cannot see themselves in something so ordinary.

I heard a term years ago, and love it. It is called "affluenza"- giving someone too much, just because you have the money.
Definitely something less expensive! It's going to get dinged at the least. Something brand new is going to cost so much to get fixed, the insurance will be sky-high... no way.
The only accidents I've ever been in were in my first year of driving. My dad got me a big ol' BOAT, and I understand why.

Even though I was more spoiled than anyone ever and could get anything out of my Dad, the car he bought me when I turned 16 was 12 years old and we named it the "tape mobile" due to all the duct tape repairs. You couldn't open 1 back window and on cold days the drivers door stuck. We had so much fun in it and, 30 years later still laugh about it.
All through our children's lives, if they wanted something that was name brand or more expensive than the average we made them pay 1/2 before they got it. They didn't get cars because they didn't save any money to buy one. Even though they assured us they would die if we didn't get them a car, they are both still alive and doing well (our 25 year old daughter bought her first home last year and plans to pay it off when the mortgage comes due in 5 years)

The only one of my kids who even HAD a car at 16 was my son, who lied about his age at 15, got a job at Drug Emporium (sounds shady but was really just a discount drug store) and saved his money. On his 16th birthday he disappeared and came home driving a 15 year old Chevette. Which he never drove because he always liked to borrow my MG convertible. Brat.

If I had a child, he/she would get to pick a good used car with a cap of around $7K. And the child would have to pay for insurance, gas, and repairs. At 16, no one has had enough experience driving to insure that the car won't be crashed or dented. And I can't imagine what the insurance premiums on a $90K car for a 16 year old would be. A couple thousand a month?
When my dog reaches 16 years old I'll gladly buy him a car. He's not into driving though.

A 16 year old has no business owning a car that wasn't towed out of a salvage yard. Fixing up your first car is an American rite of passage that should be missed by no one, and any parent who denies their child this simple, character-building pleasure should have their gonads revoked.
It's ridiculous and completely out of touch with reality but I can't say I'm worked up about it. This family has no values so it's not like what car she gets is going to teach her anything. The line was crossed so long ago this amounts to a drop in a bucket of immoral behavior.

My husband is an excellent example of why 16-year-olds shouldn't be entitled to expensive new cars, or even to new cars at all. His (apparently well-off) mom gave him one when he got his license. Of course, he also wrecked his new car not long after he got it. His mom replaced it with a new one, which he also wrecked a few months later. I think he said this happened once more before she stopped buying him new cars. It was after this, when he had to supply his own vehicles, that he started learning the value to them.
I would never buy my daughter a new car. In this state, minors can't drive without adults in the car, anyway, so she wouldn't even have a need for one until she's 18.
I wouldn't buy a 16 year old a $9k car. I don't know if I could fathom buying myself a $90k even if we did have the money!
I like the ideas of the kid going in halves with the car b/c I feel like they are more likely to take care of it if it had to come out of their own pocket.

This girl I knew growing up...her Dad saved a brand new 1962 VW Bug for her when she turned 16. Zero miles on it. She totaled it the day she turned 16.
I'd be more likely to pay for something more useful to my kid's soul, like a big trip abroad. That's what I did at 16 (going halfsies with my parents on a year in Europe, given the choice between that and a car) and at 32 I still don't drive or own a car, so my poor daughter is doomed on this front...she knows I am not a fan of the effect of casual car use on society. lol
Anyway, my kid wouldn't even expect this. She's 8 and I won't even pay for the puppy she wants now. (1) I needed to buy time before we adopt one and (2) she makes BANK selling lemonade in the summer. I figure it's character building.

My first car was a GEO Metro & I had to pay for it. I worked my ass off. My brother and sister got help with their first car. I didn't get help because; the curse of the youngest child; there was no money to help me. I think that it made me a stronger person to work for it. It sure made me appreciate how mant hours you have to work to pay for something.
Most of the wealthy have money b/c they don't do sh*t like that. I would never buy a car that's basically a target for crime.

I come from a "car family", going back 3 generations incl. many in my family who are NASCAR racing legends. I own 23 classic cars and hot rods all of which I've restored from junk. Thus I grew up in a car culture of cruising, racing, and cool rides.
I began driving at 11yo and could drive dumptrucks, bulldozers, and almost anything. At 13yo, Dad and I bought a beat-up 69 Camaro from a junkyard. He paid $250 for it and told me I could fix it up myself. For three years I did just that. Motor rebuild, body, chassis, paint, trans, interior - until it was MINT. At 16 I drove it one week and was scared it would get hit by a drunk after all the work I'd put into it. I parked it and used my own money to buy a POS Honda Prelude. I did drive it on occasion, including my first date with my now deceased wife. My 1st kid was conceived in the backseat! I still have that Camaro and was offered $45k for it recently. It taught me REAL value and REAL work ethic.
Both my daughters have been driving since about age 10 (backroads and dirt roads). My eldest girl saved money from working as a makeup asst (for weddings, etc.) to buy her own used Jeep. My youngest girl has a 1968 Camaro Convertible in my garage for her in 2 years. It was a gift from NASCAR owner Rick Hendrick to her - and my girl already has 1./2 the cash I asked her to save to pay me for it. Her money is really HERS she's earned from royalties from songs she's sold and TV/Music earnings (Nick TV). She could afford nearly any car made - but she wants that one and is paying her own way!
It's the principle of it, and they'll value things in life if they work for it. I've never taken anything for granted and hope they don't either. Can't imagine a Kardash kid doing that!
