Blind Item #10

This B list reality star who is not really a star any longer but continues to exist in the shadows of that A list family of his is undergoing ECT. I didn't even know they still did that, but they do and he is undergoing the procedure.

lobotomy for both these idiots and nothing less!

Primarily prescribed for depression, it's pretty mainstream therapy because it's effective and has few side effects. If there is an addictive personality involved, why prescribe something that won't mix well with other things?

Yeah ECT is way different now than the old creepy asylum days. I've heard it is a rather effective treatment for major depression disorder.

My mother, who is bipolar had it done decades ago, and it was only as a last resort as she was suicidal and not getting better with meds. She has memory loss from it.

She said it is done differently now (they don'T shock an entire hemisphere at a time), but still typically as a last resort/when medicines aren't working.

My ex-husband had 15 ECT treatments ~ 7 years ago for treatment-refractory major depression. It's quite common.
Unfortunately, many people have the same reaction as Enty, which is why it's not widely known.

They more fun ways to fry you brain. Trust me on this y'all.

Carrie Fisher is a big advocate of ECT.

Carrie Fisher swears by it, however, she has developed a slur to her speech and she is losing a lot of her memory due to ECT, which is why she is working on her third memoir.

@ Kno, did he have any negative side effects like the aforementioned memory loss? This ECT treatment has just been suggested to someone very near & dear to me & the description of it makes me really hesitant too.

I wonder how they determine(& I'm sure mb they can w/various brain scans) that the memory loss is directly caused by the ECT & not by age, dementia, alzheimer's setting in &/or exacerbated by her years of alcohol/drug abuse...

He did, but it doesn't seem to have been permanent. Treatment days are tough, though.
When he'd come out, he'd be very childlike & vacant. I couldn't leave him alone for ~ 24 hours.
If I remember correctly, he had them 3 times a week for 5 weeks. In fact, I think he had another round six months later or so, but I can't swear to the schedule.
He'd been in a major depressive episode for ~ 10 years by that time. Standard medication carousel, inpatient hospitalization, outpatient groups, individual therapy, yada yada.
If it wasn't helpful, they wouldn't still be permitted to do it, but nothing's guaranteed.
Good luck, BA. Hit me up any time.

It is very different from what it used to be. They do it frequently at the Mayo Clinic. Side effects vary, but for someone with severe depression that doesn't respond to medications, it can be a good option.

Enty doesn't know they still use it. This is the dumb enty. Pretty common with Hollywood types, since drugs have more visible side effects. Enty stigmatizing mental illness again.

I'm sure Carrie noticed when she started to lose some memories and what she is able to correlate it to. She is pretty selfaware.

I started undergoing ECT last summer. I'm bipolar with treatment resistant depression. We tried EVERYTHING. ECT is a last resort but it's not uncommon.

I started out at 3 treatments per week and I've now progressed to one per month. I had some short term memory loss but that dissipated once the time between treatments got longer. There is no long term memory loss. (My dad was freaked that I might lose everything I learned in college and grad school.)

I'd be dead if it wasn't for ECT and the awesome docs at UCLA!!

The CDANers really helped me during many dark days--even the Dereks. Thanks to you all as well!

That's very kind of you.
My life philosophy: shit happens, then other shit happens, everybody has shit (except maybe Yolanda Foster), don't let shit define you.

That's great! It's pretty amazing how they do it now.
Days like this I'm pretty sure this Enty never went to law school and rarely leaves his house. It's astounding how sheltered & easily scandalized 'he' is.
One day, I'll figure out how many Entys there are and the demographics of each. Today is not that day.
So glad you're doing better.

Glad to hear you're doing better. Major depression is a bitch

back again said...

thanks.yes she certainly is-more so than most arguably. i just wondered if the ECT practice tends to downplay that side effect..

Hey @HannahF, thanks for sharing/explaining that. Sooo good to hear this has helped you & all is so much better for you.. ; )

Isn't this treatment why Hemingway killed himself? After he had it he couldn't write any longer. Or was it something else?

Carrie does go into detail about her ECT in her book, "Shockoholic". I find her to always be a good read.

Seems to me Americans are over The Kardashians\Jenners and Courtney out with Scott, Khloe out with Lamar, Kim's naked selfies, and Rob plastered over the gossip sites are them trying to capture our attention. Hopefully, their era of dominating the entertainment world is about over!
