Emma Watson; http://www.ibtimes.com/panama-papers-update-emma-watson-denies-tax-evasion-after-leak-reveals-actress-used-2367280
emma watson
I'm just not sure how this Panama Papers thing will eventually play out. I find it extremely difficult to believe that dozens of multi-millionaires will literally do jail time. That would be a first.
The Panama papers exposed wealthy people who took advantage of lax tax regulations and acted unethically, but they did not break the law as such, just sailed round it in their private yachts. That's why Emma isn't worried about jail time. Most of her fans are probably too young to care / keep up to date with the news, so it really doesn't affect her and until they close the loophole, people are going to take full advantage.
I'm normally very ethical and moral, but this one conflicts me. If I had millions, would I really want to pay tax that was easy to get out of and that none of my peers would be paying either? Probably not, but I'd try and give some of the savings to charity before my conscience got to me too much!
I agree. I'm not sure why there's been so much talk of jail time for so many people. It just isn't going to happen, especially if they broke no laws. Folks do love a witch hunt.
It's tough to justify paying taxes when the structure exists that allows you to *not* pay taxes. I doubt those structures will disappear in my lifetime. They might change, look different, reinvent themselves entirely, but they won't go away.
Total bullshit "blind".
Emma Watson hasn't broken the law with the whole Panama Papers 'scandal'.
Maybe she didn't break US tax law, but I'm given to understand the Brits' take is a little more stringent than ours in the states.
.
And, yes, some of those involved in the Panama Papers did break laws. Both tax and other types. Some of the "legal" tax loopholes venture awfully close to money laundering. Further, if the financial instruments aren't precisely crafted, they run afoul of the law.
She's not being investigated for tax evasion. She's not facing jail time.
She owns shares in an offshore holding company -- which is in no way illegal. When she was publicly linked with the company by the leak of the "Panama Papers," her people offered a perfectly credible explanation for it, and what's known about the activities of the company (that it bought a luxury home in London) is completely consistent with that explanation.
Is it possible that there's something fishy here? Sure. But there isn't the tiniest shred of evidence to support that.
not illegal but very very dodge!!! im sure she'll lose some street cred over this but at the same time im sure none of the higher-ups will care... if a prime minister can do it, why can't she?
Tax loopholes, could anything be more boring? I think not.
Leave it to the lawyers and accountants and be on your merry way, Emma.
