Your Turn

Have you ever worked at a place where they let you bail from work early on Fridays during the summer?

At the last place I worked I'd arrange, whether is was true or not, to have to be gone by mid Friday afternoon sometimes, maybe twice a summer.

IF you've put the time in M-Th, yes. Just free time off, no. And everybody can't bail at the same time because business hours.

We have summer hours - workday is shortened by 1/2 hour every day from May - August. Although when you're paid on salary, that 1/2 hour really doesn't mean much since most of us are still here past 5 pm.

Yes and it easy awesome! I also worked at another place that would shut down early noon on Fridays and take everyone out for drinks and apps. All you can eat or drink (whatever you want) and the company paid for everything.

Worked in a grocery store so I can't say yes. But one night (3rd Shift) I just happened to be in charge (seniority). I had two guys leave and drove down to Tennessee (from Louisville, Ky) state line to get fireworks, while still on the clock. I didn't find out until 3 hours into the shift. When they came back, about 30 minutes before any managers came in, I reamed them out. "If you two idiots got into a wreck, It would be my neck in the vice!!" But they did get 1000 bottle rockets. We spend the next 3 weeks firing them at cars on the highway.

I thought the original posting said "ball on Friday". I was all set to tell a story that would have had Wolf Blitzer's wife seeing her divorce attorney by day's end. Good thing I re-read the post.

I'm job hunting and I noticed that some of the postings I'm looking at have these perks as part of their benefits listed. So I guess companies are returning to the old way of doing things again.

No leaving work early in the case of physically exiting the building,
BUT, at the 2nd to last 'national' real estate firm I was at, I started Kahlua & Coffee for Friday afternoons.
The staff loved me; the partners didn't.
(They were a bunch of poor businessmen a-holes anyway.)
I think it was about a year later that I bid good riddance to them when i was screwed out of one too many RE commissions.
Since starting on my own in 2008, I haven't looked back.
PS: That 'firm' is no longer in business in Las Vegas.

Yes.
The maintenance crew leaves at 3 or 4 on Fridays and the office crew can leave at noon. Landscape staff leaves whenever the work is done. Work smart, you're done at noon too.
It might be a 'thing' in SW Ontario.
This isn't the only job I've had that cuts out early in summer.
Long weekends from mid May to August.

I wish! Always worked for the CEO and couldn't leave even when he left early to go to his home in the Hamptons. He would call me from his deck telling me how great the wine and Sunset were! Yes, I hated him. Sadly, he choked to death at a 5 Star steak restaurant a few years later. Still have the Obit.

If by bailing out early you mean doing less than one extra unpaid half hour that day... Neither.

Yes. Makes you feel out of sorts, like you don't know what to do with yourself during the free time.

Working at one now! It's actually really nice but you have to work longer hours the rest of the week to make up the time.

I worked for a Boston-based ad agency with multiple offices around the country and every other Friday in the summer, you got the whole day off (workload permitting.) Somehow, you made sure it permitted. Didn't have to make the time up; they figured you probably more than made up for it during the rest of the year.

Yeah. Every Friday thoughout the year at the highest poverty rated school in the state. Everyone blew out the door as soon as the kids left. Except me. I had to have the room just right for Monday morning.

When I was in my early 20's I had a job that had ebb & tide business. My boss was so cool, not only did she let us leave on most quiet Fridays 1 hour early, but she once insisted my colleague and I go to see 'Bridget Jones' Diary' during our lunch break, and she'd cover the phones and emails for us.

Now I am the boss, and if it's quiet and I know there won't be any business to be done, I let my staff leave early on fridays.
I also order lunch in on their birthdays and always open a bottle of wine.

I leave whenever I can now that the weather is nice. Our partners leave whenever they want on nice days and play golf.
