I don't have a TV so I had to wait till this am to watch Seth's monologue. It was obvious from the groans and boos there are still enough machers who miss Harvey and Spacey that very little is going to change in Tinsel Town any time soon. Embarrassing to watch Meryl do her humble, ah-shucks routine at Spielberg's table. He did the same thing. Nobody is buying that any longer. The highlight for me was the woman coming on stage with an arm full of awards after The Post was mentioned. They won zilch. Yes, Oprah is running for president! Her opening salvo was her speech. Run Oprah Run!
I don't know much about the golden globes but I watched 3 billboards last week and The shape of Water last night. Can't argue with those choices. Both excellent films. I have yet to watch Lady Bird.
Didn't feel much at all for the Disaster Artist however I had never heard of the subject. Franco was good at least.In fact I think Franco deserves a lot more credit for his craft. He is superb in The Deuce. I have not seen Darkest Hour. I guess i will have to look that one up.
The TV stuff makes no sense to me when there has been a plethora of good material coming out of the US in the last year. You'd think there had been nothing on but the Handmaids Tale and Big Little lies. The latter of which I managed almost a full episode before I dismissed it as crap.
I suppose this is a barometer for the Oscars?
I haven’t seen Three Billboards...yet! My adoration of Sam Rockwell and Frances McDormand mean I absolutely will, even aside from supporting McDonagh whose family come from the same area mine do, (I’m actually not usually one for flag-waving types of patriotism, and I’d have the same regard for Saoirse Ronan regardless of where she’s from, but it’s tough for Connemara people to be taken seriously, so I get a perverse pleasure of the likes of the McDonaghs doing well)
Leaving aside ill-feeling towards James Franco, I’m a fan of The Room and The Disaster Artist book. James *nailed* Tommy Wiseau, and I think was very gentle with him, which I’m glad about. The account of the filming is generally as per the book, with some exceptions for expediency. So, on that score, James absolutely deserved credit.
Amiable as the brother was, I didn’t recognise his Greg from the one in the book (and looks a good bit shorter), or the persona he gives off in real life.
