Blind Item #1 - Alex Winter's Molester

The guy Alex Winter was molested by was an evil man and suffered death as an evil man should. A man, who by all accounts molested and raped hundreds of boys throughout his life and was eventually killed by his adopted teenage son who he had molested and raped for years. Our actor is foreign born and was killed just shy of his 70th birthday. Foreign born and a multiple Tony Award winner who was nominated multiple more times. One of his wins was for arguably one of the more famous musicals ever on Broadway. One of his nominations was for a musical that was great on Broadway and absolute crap when they made it into a movie. He was in both. One final clue is our actor died in a different foreign country from where he was born.

George Rose. There were plenty of clues to just google and find him. Born in England, he was tortured and beaten to death in the Dominican Republic and burried in an unmarked grave.

George Rose wiki:

In 1984, he purchased a holiday home in Sosúa, Dominican Republic, where he spent much of his time between his performances. Rose was gay and had no immediate family or permanent partner. He reportedly longed to have an heir. Shortly after moving, he took in a 14-year-old boy whom he supported financially and to whom he planned to leave his estate. He adopted the boy in January 1988.[2]

On 5 May 1988, during a two-week hiatus from the national tour of Drood, Rose was tortured and beaten to death by his adopted son, the boy's biological father,[7] an uncle, and a friend of the father. The assailants tried to make the death look like a car accident, but soon confessed to killing Rose.[2] Though all four men were charged and spent time in prison, no trial was ever held, and eventually all were released.[1]

Rose is buried in an unmarked grave in a cemetery near his holiday home in Sosúa

Just saw Alex Winter on a Bitcoin documentary on Netflix. Very well spoken. Good to see he survived the awfulness. The blind is clearly George Rose as others have pointed out. So sad that he molested so many boys. Sounds like he deserved his terrible fate.

Dena said...

I love Alex Winter and am very sorry this happened to him.

mistang said...

While I'm not discounting that anything horrible happened, but besides the family killing him is there anything that points to him being a molester? The plan was to leave everything to this boy and then the boy and his family kill him. They could have killed him because of the molestation, but it could have also been about the money. Just playing devil's advocate.

I do find it odd that no trial was held and they were all released. Plus, it was reported by a friend that he was going to change his will.

Urban reader said...

Interesting, in a bad way, is the fact that Rose entertained many celebrities in the company of a succession of these abused "protegees" none of whom ever reported the abuse. Complicity is the thing itself, just one step removed.

Mark said...

@Saintpat, regarding Oxford commas, is enty a staunch user, a casual user, or a disuser?

mistang said...

Ahh, nevermind.

"Juan claimed he had been having a sexual relationship with Rose while living in his house for the past four years, and had become insanely jealous of another boy who hung out at the house and with whom he accused Rose of flirting. He said he planned the murder with his natural father, who enlisted the help of the other two. Juan lured Rose into going for a drive, passing a spot where the others were waiting, armed with a gun bought by Juan, who then left the scene. The father said he “sought revenge on the American Rose because of his homosexual activities, since he was hurting a lot of boys... in addition to mine, whom he had already prostituted since the age of 13 to satisfy his sexual desires.” As an afterthought, both also admitted to a fear that Juan was about to be disinherited."

To actually comment on the blind itself, I'm very happy for Alex being able to deal with what happened to him and be able to become a successful adult in the industry, and to feel empowered enough to share his story. I'm also glad George died at the hands of the child he molested and his family - it may not be legal justice, but it's justice for Juan.

Um, no hint of a permanent partner, took in a 14 year old boy (whom he later adopted) in an island country, with another 14 year old boy about to take the aging youngster's place in the home ... nothing unusual in that.

Call Me By Your Name is nominated for like 3 Oscars, so it's not going to "sweep" anything. And you might want to google the term pedophilia because you don't really know what it means.

This is off topic, my apologies, but since reading these stories, I am leaning towards believing the Menendez brothers accusation about their father. At the time, and even until recently, it seemed so far fetched.

IanPhlegming said...

One wonders what the public reaction to "Call Me By Your Name" would've been if the 17-year old had been a girl.

It's also of interest to me that "eating a peach" has up to this point been about cunnilingus, yet they try to reinvent it as something else in "Call Me By Your Name."

A well-made and acted film, I would never deny. But there's a lot of subject wrong with it that few have had the guts to address.

Don Kieballs said...

Theresa - when all the Hollywood pedophile stories started becoming big, I think most people started to view the Menendez brothers in a different way. It was such a far-fetched, ridiculous story back then that suddenly seemed extremely believable.

Snootches said...

I have no issues with that "viral" video. Fathers can kiss their sons, it doesn't need to be anything more. I still kiss my kid. Sue me.

ancoranonhocapito said...

@Mark: how is that use of "whom" incorrect? Do you want him to use "who"? Why?

"his adopted teenage son WHOM he had molested"

"Whom" is not the subject of the verb in the second part of the sentence, "he" is. "whom" is the object. Hence, "whom". No mistake.

Good call on George Rose.

I have seen sentences that aren’t clear when the oxford comma IS NOT used.

For example:

“John, Mike, and I went to the party.” (With comma. All of these people went to the party.)

“John, Mike and I went to the party.” (Without comma. Is this being said to John? That Mike and the writer were the ones to go to the party?)

TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT MEANINGS – ALL BECAUSE OF THE USE OF THE OXFORD COMMA.

Yea, I hate to defend relationships between young men and old men but that movie is not portraying pedophilia. A person who is attracted to prepubescent children is a pedo. A person who is attracted to mid to late adolescents (15-19) is technically an ephebophile. There is a difference in the psychology of it. Not excusing it or defending it but one is far more sinister.

The setting of that movie is in Italy, a long time ago, where and when 17 was well within the age of consent. It's definitely uncomfortable, and 17 year olds are much younger now than they were then, but we have to remember that it is portraying a different time and place. My grandparents had their first child and were married by the time my grandmother was 17 and that was very normal back then. It was not unusual at all for people to be married and pregnant at the age of 16 and 17 back in the day. You have to remember, this was a time when we sent boys off to die in wars at 18 so people seemed much older then. The maturity of a 17 years old before 1980 was far different than it is today and they get less mature with every decade. By today standards the movie is creepy but it's not set in today's world, and even if it was it's still not pedophilia.

Immediately begins defending relationships between young men and old men.

Did I use the word "pedophile"? Don't believe I did. Let me check. Nope. I didn't.

Great point too about Armie Hammer, @Robbie, who is 31 (and looks older) playing the 24 year old guy. So glad he didn't get any Oscar attention. Plus, he's just vaporware on screen, like the watered down version of Thomas Jane, an actual actor not a billionaire scion. Hammer couldn't even pull off a two dimensional character like the Lone Ranger, you may recall (though he was hardly the worst thing about that movie, either).

Do you happen to recall the title of the blind? I will try searching the name Menendez and see if I find anything.

I wanted to believe the brothers when I watched their testimony, but I just could not wrap my head around the possibility. After reading blinds here the past few months, it seems like this is normal in the entertainment industries. It's mindboggling how so many others on the periphery, make up artists sound techs, etc., just shut up and accept this as par for the course. I base this statement on the dancing boy notices the eyes of pity from others who know what is about to happen to him. Way too many people remained silent for this to continue so long to so many. Could that be any of us under similar circumstances?

@DDonna Well Manhattan, Ghost World, Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015 the girl is 15), two versions of Lolita, An Education (2009), American Beauty etc. all came and went without anyone minding. Many got excellent reviews. Manhattan is considered a classic.

said...

@Annyoung Bluth
Well put. Also, "American Beauty" won Best Picture, Kevin Spacey won Best Actor, "Manhattan" had multiple nominations, etc.

If "Call Me By Your Name" featured a 17-year-old girl instead of boy, we probably wouldn't even see pedo comments about it. The male homosexuality in the movie is what I think has most people upset, even if they don't realize that's what they're reacting to.

I'm not comfortable with the subject matter myself because 17 is barely legal (in some places, still illegal). But Hollywood and society in general have shown themselves to be openly OK with teen girl/older man scenarios.

Don't blame me. "Blame it on Rio."

Bubbles said...

First of all, "Call Me By Your Name" wasn't set in another time unless you consider the 80's that long ago. But if 17 years pre 80's were so different from post 80's 17 year olds then I think not. I must admit I'm a bit baffled about a 17 year old from 1975 and what made them more mature than a 17 year old 10 years later.

Anyway, I digress. Regarding how it would have played if it had been a teenage female, I know "Lolita" might have been a bit controversial, but it certainly wasn't banned here in the states. And dating 17 year olds didn't run Paul Walker or Jerry Seinfeld's career in the least.

With that being said, I have to say I thought CMBYN was one of the most overrated films I've seen in ages. I've been more fascinated by water dripping from the faucet and I didn't even pay to say this film, I watched an awards screener.

Original Unknown skeptic said...

I was defending a movie and attitudes about ages back in the day, you idiot, not relationships between young men and old men now. If we judge everyone and everything based on today's standards, all of our grandparents would be either pedos or child brides and our great grandparents would be complicit in some sick shit. The reality is we know people started life much younger back then and my point was that was the time the movie was based upon. Btw, I wasn't even fucking talking to you to begin with. If you notice my reply was posted to someone who very specifically used the word pedophile, not you! So before you think I'm talking to you, you might want to check who I was replying to to see if it makes sense, you lunatic. This time I am talking to you @Donna

Original Unknown skeptic said...

I'm talking about in general and again 17 is the age of consent in many places here in the states and abroad. The 80s were almost 40 years ago now, so, yea it was quite a while ago at this point. I know those of us that grew up in the 80s don't see it that way, but many things have changed in 40 years. The maturity level of 17 year olds is just one of them.

katsm0711 said...

You’re right @originalunknown. I’m so sick of people calling everyone pedophiles, equating molesting a 2 year old in diapers who can’t even speak, with a 16 year old.

Isn’t there a way to search a website for a specific word or phrase? I think you do, and don’t forget the quotes, “www.crazydaysandnights.com+menendez” or if you search more than one word I think it would be “...menendez+brothers”
I know there are a lot of tricks for searching but I never learned them.

BayAreaGirl said...

@Theresa, I also recommend looking into how PTSD is manifested in sexual abuse survivors. I majored in Psychology & during undergrad, I interned for a former head of the NIMH while he was researching various forms of PTSD. He privately told me that he believed the Menendez brothers because they presented with classic symptoms years before the murders. I was just a kid when the murders happened, but after doing a little research as an adult, there is no other reasonable conclusion.

Another case I am rethinking is Johnny Kosch. I read his mothers book " Why Johhny Can't Come to Home" after watching a documentary on Netflix, I think it was titled "Where is Johhny?" His mother has concluded, with evidence from private investigators, that her son was abducted for a pedophile ring that was connected to the Franklin cover-up. Somewhere in either the book or the documentary, a former president was mentioned as part of this pedophile ring. I dismissed it right out of hand as being too bizarre to be true. I am rethinking that assessment as well after reading blinds on the topic.

katsm0711 said...

This isn’t about a whole pedophile ring but you reminded me of the TV movie, ‘I Know My First Name is Steven’. I’m sure everyone here has seen it but it’s one of those WHOA movies that sticks in the saddest part of your head forever.

"I wanted to believe the brothers when I watched their testimony, but I just could not wrap my head around the possibility. After reading blinds here the past few months, it seems like this is normal in the entertainment industries."

Not only is it "normal in the entertainment industries", but everywhere. Victoria Martens first comes to mind. Sick people have children and don't give a flying fuck about them. I have a friend who was "given to her mother's boss to get a promotion. Another friend of mines grandfather prostituted his two children (her mother and uncle) on a cross country trip to keep gas in the car. My father "sold" me to his "buddies" for kicks. Wealthy, poor, upper middle class, it doesn't matter. It happens, it's always happened and will continue to unless some major societal changes occur. #1 is BELIEVING. I leave you all with this thought: what does anyone gain by lying about being molested? Yes, there are other types of sick people who may be looking for money or some personal gain. Disclosing they were sexually abused wasn't going to keep the Menendez brothers out of jail. Or when Amanda Bynes said her father sexually abused her, right away people accused her of being an attention whore. Yes, she needed attention, but certainly not the severely negative attention she got. Most of us don't tell anyone for a myriad of reasons, not being believed is one of the biggest.

LisaHunt said...

Caviat: I'm not saying everyone should be believed, carte blanche. Children should be the only exception to that statement.

The grammatical mistakes in these blinds are just way too many to name. Not only that but the sentence structure is so bad that I don’t know half the time who they’re even talking about. For example two actors will be mentioned and then followed by something like: “he then had an affair with a woman”
Wait, you said HE. Which HE are you talking about?!
We read these blind items out loud at work. We get a good laugh making fun of the author and how horrible they are at spelling, grammar and generally the English language. Lol
