I actually have a plausible explanation for this one.
Turns out it has to do with children. Once a couple has a child, what the woman needs from her man more than anything is to be supported. She'll be needing to focus almost all her energy on that child/children. She's got no time time to build and maintain shelter, to go out in the fields for food, or any of that. Both the mother and her child become highly dependent on the father.
Now for the dude to do all the things required of him as a father, there is one thing VERY important to him. That had BETTER be his child.
This is not cultural. It's genetic.
What women look for from men is to be able to depend on them. This is why they want big, rich guys. Little guys with no jobs have very little to offer most women.
And if their guy manages to very quietly score a little opportunistic sex now and then, it's not nearly as big a deal as if she finds out that he's actually keeping another woman on the side. THAT won't cut it.
What men look for from women is exclusive and regular sex. If he thinks his woman is doing another dude on the side, it is guaranteed to drive him absolutely mad.
In practice, of course, it is never quite that simple. But these two forces drive things between men and women and I think this goes a long way towards answering your original question.
Now, MY wife would not tolerate ANY hanky panky and thankfully I have nothing to hide. But my understanding is that this is not generally true.
