I’m just curious as to where Hollywood has culled this notion that we the viewing public cannot handle the notion that an actor or actress might be gay?
HeatherBee: Hollywood doesn't assume that about us because the powers-that-be in Tinsel Town know that people who comment on CDAN are not your ordinary, every day people! Astute, witty, informed, cultivated, know the score, know what time it is, discerning, well-read, forward thinking, readers of foreign newspapers and magazines, unflappable...you name it. We're trend setters, damnit!
I think Jake Gyllenhaal fans would ACCEPT him if he came out. Look at Matt Bomer he is handsome and gay and has straight fans. I admit Bomer is not as high as Jake Gyllenhaal is on the Hollywood list. But sad that a man almost 38 years old has to PRETEND to be heterosexual when he is not. But I also believe some people are being Naïve WHEN THEY SAY homophobia is not a big deal in society. IT STILL IS. Jake Gyllenhaal has been aggressive the last few years TRYING to get more straight male fans to see his films. He made the boxing movie I think last year. And he tried to get a action hero movie be a success but it failed. Next, you got the Hollywood agents, managers, and even family telling the gay actor to stay in the closet. The gay men who have come out are not as high as Jake Gyllenhaal is on the Holllywood list. Jake is still in his prime late 30s now. The only gay man I can think of who is high profile and out is the British actor Luke Evans. But even Evans tries very hard to NOT discuss being GAY. Luke Evans goes out of his way to appear heterosexual.
