Taking his money and running from the network that only has one hit show, James Spader is leaving The Office at the end of the season. Even though his contract has an option, James wants out which means he probably has another television show lined up or wants to do something where people actually watch him each week. I watched him and think he was really good. I think the issue is that the character has some limits and when you see him every week those limits are exposed. Wow. Can you tell I have been reading film reviews for the past week about the Oscars. That sounded a little insightful and pretentious of me. Don't worry I slapped myself and I am ok now.

After being basically separated for the past three years, but officially since January, former UK Office star, Lucy Davis filed for divorce from her husband, Owain Yeoman who is on The Mentalist. You know, if you combine him with Simon Baker, do you think that show has the best looking pretty boys on it? I think other shows have the claim on the gritty good looking people, but also they are on cable and The Mentalist is on CBS. Anyway, Lucy was the original Pam before Jenna Fischer became Pam. If you have never seen the UK version of The Office it is brilliant. It makes you way more uncomfortable than watching the American version. The first few episodes of each are almost exactly the same if you want to compare and make sure you watch the last episode where David Brent goes on a reality tour.

It is amazing what you can do with a little editing. The comedy show becomes something entirely different.

In the season finale last year, I thought James Spader was the best actor they put in that episode, but I am also unsure if it would translate into an entire 26 episode season. It will certainly provide a new dynamic and make The Office dramatically different than it was in the past. The lines you write for Steve Carell as Michael Scott are not the same you write for James Spader as Robert California. I kind of enjoyed Creed being boss. A whole season if him being the boss could be hilarious.

This is just a quick little recap of some impressions I have had watching the last two weeks of The Office without Steve Carrell there. They have been brilliant. I have probably watched 80% of all The Office episodes and I cannot remember ever laughing out loud. Wait, I take that back. I did the one time when Michael refused to not follow the GPS and ended up in a pond. That is about it though. The last two weeks have seen me laugh out loud and last week, I was nearly in tears at several points.
For those of you who are die hard Office fans, I am sure you will miss Michael. I thought the show would fall apart without him, but it is the exact opposite. Suddenly the writers have room to breathe and characters to explore instead of giving half the lines each week to Steve. Last night Creed got 25% of the lines. Never would have happened before. Everyone is getting more time to expand and because the writers are not constrained within the limits of focusing the show around Steve, they are more funny and creative and it has been brilliant.
Last night, there was some stunt casting to fill the role of the head of the Scranton branch. Ricky Gervais was funny and Catherine Tate was also on there, although with longer hair. Jim Carrey, Ray Romano and Will Arnett also made appearances. The performance of the night though and very much Emmy worthy in the guest role category was James Spader. That guy can flat out act. He may be challenging Val Kilmer on the scales, but you can tell he is a brilliant actor when you watch him with all the other people they had on the show. He was great and the writing with him was brilliant.

So, next season it looks like Will Ferrell will be the boss at The Office. Quoting from the press release, the show runner, Paul Lieberstein, who also plays Toby says, "We are proud to continue The Office's tradition of discovering famous talent, and we hope that once America gets a good look at Will, they'll see what we see, tremendous raw sexuality."
With Will's movie career not doing so hot right now this seems like a pretty good time to have him move back over to television. It is not like he still can't do movies, and he gets to head into a hit show and make a huge paycheck and I think it is the right fit for the show. I sense there will be many opportunities for Will to strip down to a thong and show the word that raw sexuality.
Do you think Pearl will be his landlord?

After spending 30 seconds in a recent episode of The Office and sharing a hug with Michael Scott, David Brent returns to The Office for the season finale. Maybe he can take Michael along with him on his promotional appearances. If you have never seen that final episode of the UK Office, you really need to check it out. It is hilarious. Will Arnett is also going to star in the finale and I think he would be a great boss for next season. Plus, his wife comes on right after him so the Arnett/Poehler clan can take over an hour of primetime NBC. Now, if he could run the company as Gob that would make it even better. No, seriously, Will as Will would be a good fit.

In the last week, The Office has actually made some news which is something it has not done since that Superbowl episode which featured Jack Black, Jessica Alba and Cloris Leachman. First they announced that Ricky Gervais will be in the cold open in tonight's episode which should be great. Now, they have signed up Will Ferrell for a four episode arc. He will play someone exactly like Mike Scott and will help usher Steve Carrell out the door. Too bad he won't stick around for a season because he could probably use the break from movies for awhile. He has not really had a hit lately. Oh, I finally got around to watching Land Of The Lost the other night. I managed to make it through 20 minutes before deciding I could not make it another second. Wow it was bad. The only reason I stuck around for 20 minutes was because of Danny McBride. When Will shows up on Danny's show Eastbound & Down (which Will produces), he is hilarious so maybe television is the right remedy for Will for awhile.

One of the producers of The Office spoke to E! on Tuesday and floated the idea that Harvey Keitel would make a great replacement for Steve Carell on The Office.
"He's probably the only guy who can do it, and he's doing TV now. I haven't started any talks with his people, but Harvey would do a great job - a very different energy. And we don't want to bring in another Michael, having someone play a very similar character because we have such a high regard for Steve."
You know, it is an interesting choice. Yesterday when I first read about it I gave it some thought. Your first reaction is no, it couldn't work, but then you think about it and realize if they are going to keep the show on the air you can't just have someone who is replica of Steve. Even in some of Harvey's most famous violent movies you do see there is some comedy. In Pulp Fiction, he plays his part in such a way that it is almost humorous.
I think with someone of his range the possibilities of what direction his character could take are endless. I do wonder whether he can be light enough or lessen his intensity for a half hour sitcom though.

Four parts today.
Star Jones wins the award for world's smallest purse.
Skindred - Stevenage, England
So, what led to Snooki's arrest for being drunk in public on Friday?

Yep, that will do it.
So, I'm thinking you could make four suits for Tom Cruise out of the same amount of fabric for one Shaquille O'Neal suit.
Third Eye Blind - Incheon, South Korea
The Hoff got roasted this weekend. Jeffrey Ross was there for a toast and
and after drink groping.

Steve Carell was on BBC radio to talk about Date Night and eventually talk turned to The Office. Steve told the show his contract was up at the end of next season. The host then asked if Steve would be back. "I don't think so. I think that will probably be my last year." My question for those of you who watch The Office is whether it can continue without Michael Scott. Well, it can continue, but it would be as good. If Steve does decide to leave the show I do hope he is willing to film an episode which is similar to the one Ricky Gervais filmed when The Office UK ended.

Don't you just love when a a magazine does something wrong like spell Ashlee Simpson's name wrong? It makes them look like idiots. Well what makes you look even more like an idiot is when you announce a divorce and then publish a photograph of the happy couple which isn't really of the happy couple.
In this photo taken from next week's US Weekly you will notice they have Angela Kinsey and another man they are calling her husband. Ummm. Not so much. The man US Weekly is identifying as Angela's husband is actually Ed Helms, who, as you know plays Andy in The Office. Apparently US Weekly is not too concerned with fact checking as it relates to photos. Yes, I make mistakes as well, but the thing is I don't charge you to read my stuff or pretend to be some kind of news gathering agency.

So, if you will recall, I ran a blind item last week which was close to being revealed. Apparently it is going to be revealed in the next day or so, and so I might as well be first. Angela Kinsey and her husband are getting divorced. They have actually been separated since shortly after the birth of their child. Infant actually. Angela's sister-in-law and her husband's sister is the President of Lifetime.
February 12, 2009
This really could be something that is not a blind item, but the person who gave it to me really wants it as a blind rather than with a big screaming EXCLUSIVE all over it. I don't have the why yet, but it is supposed to be very interesting. You have a B- list television actress from one of the best television ensemble comedies of all time and she is getting divorced from her well connected industry husband who has had a sporadic career despite his connections. Even though they have a very, very, very young child the marriage has no chance of making it.

I guess at some point all of the writers of The Office probably just decided to go for it. If they were going to stunt cast Jack Black and Jessica Alba in a movie within the show, I guess they figured they could probably get even crazier. I think I had previously suggested some kind of weird sexual thing where Jack Black was a woman and Jessica Alba a man, but the writers have done even better.
Cloris Leachman is going to be another guest star in the episode. In one specific scene in the movie, Cloris and Jack have a sex scene. Yep. You read it right. The script calls for Cloris to be naked in a bathtub. Jack comes into the bathroom, bends down and lifts Cloris out of the tub. While he is doing this they make out. Yep. Then he carries her into the bedroom and, well, you know, they umm, yeah.
So, I think to top this, Verne is going to have to be brought out and have a sex scene with someone also. Maybe he could be in the tub, and Jessica Alba could come in and lift him out and get some of that Troyer tongue. You have the image now don't you? Yeah, sorry about that. Hey, I am. I have the image in my head as well. I'm just used to the pain because I have to look at Denise Richards photos almost every day so I am kind of numb to all horror.

Normally, I am not a big guess who is going to guest star on a television show kind of guy. For the most part I am just kind of blase about it, and I am actually pretty blase about this one too. The only reason I am bringing it up is that one of the biggest Office fans I know said they were officially done watching the show now because of the casting announcement that Jessica Alba and Jack Black would be appearing on The Office episode scheduled to air after the Super Bowl.
Most of the time I would agree that this is just a grab for some cheap ratings and publicity. In this one case though I don't think it is. Any show that airs after the Super Bowl is going to be the number one show for that week. It is going to have double or triple its regular audience even if you just have Ryan Seacrest looking into a mirror and telling people how he gets his hair so shiny. You don't have to do anything. People will watch.
Normally I am not a big fan of these kinds of things because the writers have to figure out a way to get the guest stars in without being really obvious about it or destroying the plot threads they have going for the season. Again though, I think an episode after the Super Bowl is just a one off thing anyway. It doesn't have to advance any plot lines and can just be about having fun and trying something new. Because I like The Office, I'm actually ok with them trying to pull in as many new viewers as they can and being able to announce during the game 300 different times that Jessica Alba and Jack Black are going to be on the show. This will probably get more people to stick around. The fact that Jack Black is going to dress up as a woman and play Jessica Alba's lesbian lover is just icing on the cake. OK, so I made up that last part, but if you are going to go for it, you should really go for it.
