Blind Item #8 - Punk Terrorist

This former A+ list singer from a former A+ list group is probably pretty close to permanent A list. In the past he has had all kinds of substance abuse issues. Apparently in order to deal with those substance abuse issues and mental stability issues he is on a variety of medications. Despite all of those, the FBI recently investigated him multiple times within the past year because our singer told someone about something the singer shared. It was disturbing enough and the singer seemed serious enough that the person called the police who then told the friend to call the FBI. The singer was talking about driving a vehicle into a crowded group of people and had fantasies of what it would look like. Even after the FBI interviewed him, he apparently was still telling this person about the fantasy who then told the FBI again. Since then, the singer has not spoken to the person about anything, probably catching on they were the ones who told the FBI.

No one mentioned is a punk rocker.

If the A+ rating is as a punk band and not as a general band, I'm guessing its Henry Rollins.

I'm thinkning this is Billie Joe Armstrong or Tom DeLonge. Armstrong and Green Day are far closer to perma A list as far as modern punk bands are concerned, but Blink 182 were up there at one point and DeLonge has always been more unstable, which led to the group's dissolution.

https://news.avclub.com/tom-delonge-says-he-quit-blink-182-to-focus-on-nationa-1798248488

This is DeLonge, methinks.

EddyWouldRide said...

Billie Joe Armstrong is the only one I think you could argue is flirting with permanent A List and has substance abuse issues. DeLonge would be second place but isn't in Blink 182 anymore and you'd think they'd mention the ufo stuff. Rollins is very famously drug free his entire life, so not him.

Alexandria Anna said...

Is there a rockstar who didn't had all kinds of substance abuse issues? LOL. A+ list punk singer? And the group is no longer A+ list? Or doesn't exist anymore/split? Also no idea who could have this kind of fantasies..

Krab said...

Billy Joe is still the lead singer of Green Day though. I just don't think of Blink 182 as punk, but hey, I'm old, to me punk is the Clash.

Newbomb said...

Rollins was into drugs. He is now drug free.

Melvin The Reanimated said...

@EddyWouldRide Blink 182's dissolution would explain the "former A+ list band" -- i.e. a big band that is no more. Green Day is still together.

filmfanb said...

I think Tom is the best one. He has his new UFO venture. Has friends who used to be in the FBI. Possibly could told him and then he called his buddies.

@Krab Blink 182 is punk. Maybe watered-down pop punk that's not your personal style, but they are still consider a punk band by genre definitions.

I'm guessing Enty thinks of Blink 182 as a punk band. I'm changing my guess from Rollins to the 182 guy who I've never heard of but I guess is A list. He seems bit looney.

Krab said...

No, Rollins is famous for being drug free, just about always.

Brayson87 said...

And I'll never call Green Day punk, although I did see them start a fire on stage.

Alexandria Anna said...

I guess John Lydon would be foreign born, and it's hard to believe it could be him. Glenn Danzig came to my mind first, but Misfits are permanent A+ list I guess.
Blink-182 is pop, but I'll agree with that one, makes most sense.

ckpsjp said...

Green Day is pop-punk and Billie Joe Armstrong could be considered permanent A list after the success of the Broadway show American Idiot. He has had substance abuse issues in the past and has had some bizarre public melt-downs. He's my best guess.

Sal Salington said...

Peter Murphy? I don't know about permanent A list, but didn't he have some problems with substance abuse and driving a couple years ago?

Iggy Pop is a good guess. Peter Murphy is foreign born. Bauhaus was probably punk because I don't think goth was a genre yet. Most of their fans were punks.

Doug said...

Off-topic, but Mark E Smith, the Fall: Carry Bag Man is a great song.

DDonna Tarttty said...

Tom DeLonge is a tool, but not sure he fits this. Blink182 is still around, with a new singer, and their most recent album, "California," hit #1 and was among the Top 10 albums of 2016, so I'd say that keeps them A+ list, not "former A+" list.

DeLonge has a ton riding on his "OMG Aliens are here and I have been tapped as the Chosen One by our Deep State overlords to integrate the Aliens presence to the lowly plebs," so I find it hard to believe he's actually a nascent crowd-killing Death Race 2018 wannabe.

No idea who it could be otherwise. Half the lead "singers" in music look like could-be serial killers to me.

EddyWouldRide said...

@melvin I understand your logic but I have a hard time read Delonge as 'close to permanent A List' when his only success was with Blink whom he quit/got thrown out of. Armstrong to me has more crossover success and I think is still pretty recognizable despite green day being active but totally irrelevant.

Lotta those mood-stabilizers can cause intrusive, violent thoughts. Ample evidence of that fact, plus lotta 'shooters' are on psychotropic medications when commit their senseless act of violence.

So, maybe that's the reason for all this.

Of course if it's Billy Joe, he may just be referring to all the tech colonizers that have gutted the Bay Area culture and completely ruined the Bay, who I have also fantasized about driving a car into. This is amusing, for 2 reasons:

1. Johnny Rotten has strong opinions, he's highly intelligent, very well read, and famously non violent. The only, reason ppl are guessing him is because indeed he's anti-libtards, and pro-Trump

2. the funny part is the following: driving cars and vans into crowds was invented by the biggest, most beloved pets of the liberals and lefties worldwide, the Palestinians. Other contributions and inventions by them to the world: the suicide belt, stabbing people and hijacking airplanes.

So: kiling innocent people by driving into them with vehicles=bad
but: supporting the people who invented this horrifying form of terror=tolerant and good

Oh the wonderful weaves of insanity that lefties allegiances weave...

Melvin The Reanimated said...

Green Day and BJA are probably already at perma A status anyway -- not "former" or "close to"

Blink 182 were huge, broke up, came back together and have survived the rise and fall of '90s pop-punk. Tom DeLonge had the best solo success of the group with Angels and Airwaves, and they are still well known as a band. I think Blink is pretty "close to" perm A without quite being there.

Gerard Way and MCR were A- at best. Wven if you consider emo an offshoot of punk, the only emo band to really get A+ was Fall Out Boy, and they are still going strong. Also, Way has his Umbrella Academy comics project, which I think is getting a movie or tv show adaptation. Why risk that?

DeLonge is a conspiracy theorist nutter, to boot. It's gotta be him.

brightshine said...

Okay, as a lifelong punk music lover, I have a few things:

1. Billie Joe Armstrong is a pacifist. He may hate Trump, but I HIGHLY doubt he would ever dream of driving a car into a crowd of people, regardless of their political affiliation. There's no way this is him.

2. My Chemical Romance is an emo band. Not punk, never was. This is not Gerard Way.

3. I think this might be Tom De Longe. Blink had their heyday in the late 90s, early 00s. Yes, they are punk. Tom has battled drug addiction for years leading to the Blink hiatus and the addition of Matt Skiba. It is suspected Tom has schizophrenia. This could very well be him, I'm sad to say.

Krab said...

I do like the Corgan guess, but I just wouldn't think of Pumpkins as punk. Maybe Enty does.

As for people being pacifists, etc, the point (i think?) of this post is that the person is not in his right mind. I love and adore my children greatly, but right after both were born, I had ideations of dropping them out the window, dropping them in the canal, etc. (This is common in post partum women, apparently.)

So just because someone is known to be peaceful and pacifist doesn't mean they're not possibly losing their mind. Just a point.

I see nothing in this Blind about being in a "Punk Band". Why is everyone so fixated on that matchup? This could literally be any lead singer in a well known band since they are apparently ALL on psych and illegal drugs. I really don't even have a guess as it could be any one of these singers.

Johnny Rotten/ Lydon isn't a Trump "supporter" per se. He is an anarchist. He only "supports" a Trump presidency because it should (in his view) lead to protests and overthrowing the government. This is how he described it on NPR anyway.

Why am I the first person to say Axl Rose? He was, and is, a punk in the original sense of the word. A+ Singer in former A+ group with notorious mental health problems.

Krab said...

Axl Rose not a punk in the musical sense which is what is being discussed here. Rancid hardly A+

@Maria, AGREED.

Joe said...

"Former" could refer to their A+ status, not to the status of the group existing or the lead singer as a member. This would make BJA and Green Day a possibility, although as Rock and Roll Hall of Famers I'd argue they are probably already A-listers.

Aside from the punk issue, Axl Rose is without question permanent A list by now. Nothing new he would do would get him there.

Rancid was never A-list except maybe within a very narrow segment of the music business. Tim Armstrong was probably bigger as a producer/writer (he did some great work with Pink).

Corgan is an interesting guess, especially if Enty equates "punk" and "alternative". Pumpkins were definitely A+ back in the day and probably aren't permanent A list yet. And he is notoriously a difficult person to deal with, which suggests possible psychological problems. (Green Day has had its existing lineup for 25+ years, so BJA would not seem to be difficult.) And the Pumpkins had a history of drug abuse. I think it's Corgan.

And crashing into protestors (and even trying to pass laws allowing it) is very much a right-wing fantasy, similar to gunning down 'zombies'. I've spend enough time on the internet to know you scumbags cold.

More Cowbell said...

I think we have to make sure the band would have really been considered A+ in it's heyday.

Then it really shortens the list if we look for punk bands.

Definite punk bands that could have been considered A+ (known by everyone in their heyday):
1) The Clash
2) The Romones (I think they are all dead)
3) Black Flag (eveyone knew them, right?)
4) The Sex Pistols
5) The Dead Kennedys

Maybe punk bands that would have been A+ in their heyday:
1) Blink 182 (but I would definitely call them alternative, because of the pop element and the fact that the punk style and rhythms had influenced many bands by their time)
2) Green Day (definitely A+, but I would call them alternative; maybe other people think they are punk)
3) ??
I would also like to add The Butthole Surfers, just because I like their name. :)

Personally, I think "Appetite for Destruction" is much more punk than some of the pop-punk put out by Green Day or Blink or Pumpkins. All that raw anger!

That said, Axl is known for his mental health problems, but not so much for substance problems. That was more a Slash, Duff, and Izzy thing back in the day.

Axl has been an anti-Trump guy for a long time. As a wealthy California resident, he's about to get a much higher income tax bill as well. (State taxes can no longer be deducted from federal taxes.) Maybe we'll get a song on the new GnR album about that. (Hope it's better than Eminem's anti-Trump song.)

Billie Joe may be A+ just because of the musical American Idiot, which ran on Broadway and is still restaged from time to time, particularly in Europe.
