Academy Award Nominations
There are just too many movies to choose from. I know they thought if they included ten movies instead of five that more people would be interested to watch and cheer their favorites. They thought wrong. How many years have there not been five good movies, let alone ten. Plus, if there are ten good movies then how come there are not ten actor or actress nominations? I have also decided that if there is a Disney cartoon released during the year it is required that at least one song from the movie get a nomination regardless of whether you have ever heard it. My other gripe is that George Clooney in Up In The Air is George Clooney in Oceans 11 and George Clooney in any of the past ten movies he has done. Julianne Moore being omitted from Best Actress for her role in A Single Man sucks, but I'm not sure who you would drop from the list they have picked.

Me too. I also agree that Clooney continues to show up for work and play himself over and over in each movie. So why would anyone even imagine that his performance is Oscar worthy? I think it's the politics.
I'll watch the Oscars this year but I don't have any favorites outside of Meryl in Julie & Julia. Now that's a woman who actually became Julia Child!

Again, all I really care about is Christoph Waltz. Although, I would like to see Bigelow kick Cameron's ass.
Clooney has always been the same character, just like Tommy boy always plays the same guy over and over.
And Ms Cool - lack of a babsysitter isn't our excuse anymore. We just don't want to mortgage the house to go to a movie theater filled with rude, obnoxious people who won't stop talking, won't turn off their cell phones, and sometimes smell really, really bad. There aren't too many movies that I have to see on opening weekend. I'll wait for the DVD to hit the Redbox, and pay a $1 to watch from the comfort of my couch.
We usually see our movies a year later on The Movie Network.
Mooshki, I was just thinking this morning a Great Oscar Moment in History would be when Kathryn Bigelow's name is announced as Best Director and we see James Cameron slink back down in his seat because he stood up too soon.
He'll win. But he better not win for Best Cinematography. It's all CGI.
I am rooting for the Hurt Locker! I would love it if Jeremy Renner pulled a major upset. An outstanding performance in a haunting movie.

I respectfully disagree about Clooney. What I thought made the movie, and his character, compelling was they wanted us to believe he was playing the same type of guy yet again when he really wasn't.
@ not on my dollar, I agree about Meryl and becoming Julia Child. She was mesmerizing. I hope she wins and not sure why people think Sandra B will get it.

but he really was Legend. even in that moment where he goes to Alex's house and sees...ya know-no spoiler! he has NO EMOTION at all. the impact of that scene is what is happening in the house, not on Georgie's face.

A Serious Man is a dramatic/darkly comedic film written, produced, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. It was released on October 2, 2009 in the United States. Unfortunately I think this will be the year for Avatar, but I can overlook that as long as Jeff Bridges wins for Crazy Heart--an awesome movie.
Cristophe Waltz might be deserving, but Christopher Plummer already missed his lifetime achievement Oscar in this category so he'll get it this year.
It's crap that A Single Man isn't up for best picture, director, and cinematography.
I really only bother to see Oscar-nominated and foreign movies anymore so I've seen most of these. Everything else Hollywood churns out is so bad. Ahem, the forthcoming "Valentine's Day".
"Precious" and "An Education" were so good. I just got the Hurt Locker from Netflix and will watch it soon.
"Up" is a superb movie, animated or not. I'm so glad to see it nominated.
I am thrilled to see District 9 up for an Oscar.
It was nothing what I expected it to be (thought it would be all aliens vs humans, things blowing up stuff) and really liked the story.
Honestly, I havent seen the blind side, but the few clips I have seen just look... Can Sandra even move her face? It looks like she has had too much botox to show any type of feeling.
District 9 was amazing! It was different than I thought it would be and the acting was pretty damn good, too. It gets my vote.
I have to say (and this is just my opinion) Inglourious Basterds was way overhyped. It was too long and Brad's accent grated on my nerves (I'm from the south and let me tell you, it was HORRIBLE!). I know that Tarantino is one of those long winded people who can turn a 5 minute story into 2 hours, but this movie was ridiculous. It had some funny parts, but, for the most part, I was thoroughly unimpressed. IMO, Death Proof was better than IB.
There you have it. My $0.02. I'm kind of good at being wordy, too. ;-)
Avatar - Go see it in IMAX 3D and take the oldest person you can find that has never seen IMAX. Then you will understand.
A Single Man should get recognition. It was truly a work of art, every frame, thanks to Tom Ford. And it's past time Christopher Isherwood was recognized too.
District 9 was so unexpectedly awesome. You don't need "names" or the US to make a great movie.

Jeremy Renner was incredible (I'm a little in love with him now!) and Kathryn Bigelow deserves it over her ex-husband, in my opinion.
Used to be HUGE George fan, but he has become a sad old man desperately trying to hang on to his youth. He won for Syriana because he transformed himself by gaining all that weight. But set photos showed him looking absolutely miserable, and you NEVER saw photos of him while he was losing the weight. At least he does good things for Darfur and charity.
Can't say I'm too excited about this year's awards, as I've only seen a few of the movies, but am overjoyed that that crappy "Avatar" song didn't get nominated.
I am absolutely SHOCKED that this is Christopher Plummer's first nomination...the man is LEGEND.
Haven't seen the Hurt Locker but I've heard it's fantastic and I'd love to see a woman finally win Best Director. That she'd win it over the enormous ego that is her ex-husband, would make it all the more sweet I'll bet. :)

Avatar in 3D was amazing, even though I don't think it's Best Picture worthy. Meryl Streep was awesome as Julia, and I love Helen Mirren in whatever she's in, but it would be so exciting to see Gabourey Sidibe win for PRECIOUS.

In the curse of Quentin movie column, Christoph should be in the Best Actor category(see Samuel Jackson 1996)for his mucho screen time
and Brad Pitt SHOULD HAVE been nominated for Best Supporting Actor
just for his white trash accent he threw on the Italian language!
The Blind Side is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Drop Sandra Bullock from that list and replace her with Julianne Moore or Emily Blunt!

I wholeheartedly agree with the handful of people here who have lauded A Single Man. It is, without a doubt, the best movie I have seen in a long time. It was so emotionally sharp and wrenching and SUBTLE. So many recently released movies are utterly lacking in this manner that it is appalling. Do they really think that as an audience, we need the producers and directors to spell out every theme and emotion for us (here's looking at you, Blindside)? A Single Man is just so beautiful, from conception through execution, and deserves so much more acknowledgement that it is getting.
K, rant over. But go Colin Firth!! I'm rooting for you.
