In all the years it has been on the air, I only watched a portion of an episode of "Americn Idol" and thought it rigged.
"X Factor" just got caught, correct?

Strictly Come Dancing got caught--same production company. The girl that won X Factor was the one the people thought would win and she was mentored by Rita Whora.

American shows do a lot of manipulating, but they can't out-and-out rig them. They get seriously scrutinized by the gov't.

Reality shows are not regulated the same way game shows are because the FCC doesn't define them as game shows. This includes shows like Big Brother, Survivor, American Idol, The Voice, et al. They can get away with rigging it as much as they want.

Funny, I've read interviews with the producers talking about how they get audited, and that it would be illegal for them to rig the results.

That's what the producers want us to believe and I think in most cases, they don't interfere a lot. But it's pretty easy for them to do things to help or hurt contestants. For example, on American Idol, the producers determine the order in which the contestants will perform. The first and last of the night usually get the most attention and votes. The interviews and background segments are highly edited and they can easily be manipulated to favor the contestants they want to win. Those are just a couple of examples.

Here's an article that talks about the reality of reality shows:
