Blind Item #1 - Kindness

This horror actor is probably A-/B+ list in his genre, C list elsewhere. Works a lot, and you'd know his face even if you didn't know his name. Best known for a film from a few decades ago made by a foreign born director and based on a foreign born source material. Anyway, at an after party at a horror con recently, he helped care for a very drunk girl who was drunk in a hallway and also helped a couple of other attendees prevent another attendee from luring the girl back to a hotel room.

I thought Robert Englund too. I hear he is really a nice guy. And I think NOES was based on a Japanese film.

Also Wes Craven is American but he seemed like a guy that would do it ?!

Nightmare on Elm St is not foreign source material and even though some on the left coast might think of Ohio as another country, being born in Cleveland doesn't qualify Wes Craven as being foreign born. So, Robert Englund (I thought of him first too) is out.

Not sure why my post was removed. Anyway:

Well, not based on a Japanese film, but based on Asian phenomenon: (Wiki)

"The basis of the film was inspired by several newspaper articles printed in the Los Angeles Times in the 1970s on a group of Southeast Asian refugees, who, after fleeing to the United States from the results of war and genocide in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, were suffering disturbing nightmares, after which they refused to sleep. Some of the men died in their sleep soon after. Medical authorities called the phenomenon Asian Death Syndrome."

Tony Todd, movie is Candyman. Directed by Bernard rose and English guy. Based on a short story by Clive Barker another English guy.

I know him from "Chuck" since I don't watch any horror.

Nice to hear this. :)

Tony Todd will always be Candyman in my mind. Even when he was on Chuck, and so many other shows, I always remember that role and how much I enjoyed the movie. It's great to hear another actor I enjoy has a good heart. (cut to horrible scandal next week)

Ash/Bruce Campbell from the Evil Dead franchise.

Lo Key says stop with the censorship already! said...

I could totally see Bruce being that guy, but the Evil Dead movies were directed by Sam Raimi, and they're both from Michigan. They went to school together.

Thanks, Low Key.

Everyone who's met Bruce Campbell says he's great. GIMME SOME SUGAR!

totaji said...

It is. Wes wrote it based on a news story from Thailand. Southeast Asia has urban legends about dying in your sleep. I’m not sure if Englund is the guy in the blind though.

Foreign born director and source material could mean the movie Hellraiser and the director writer Clive Barker. The lead, Andrew Robinson, made a few low budget horror movies including Scorpio from Dirty Harry and Garak from DS9. He could be doing the convention scene.

Dude who played Pinhead in Hellraiser, written & directed by Limey Barker.

Foreign source material sounds like either "Ringu" or "The Grudge" (Japanese). Or perhaps "Shutter" (Thailand).

I will never forgetting the opening scene of "Shutter", camera's just chilling, going through that group photo like a beach holiday and suddenly one of them is different... 👻😱😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

10 more months to Halloween. 🎃

I lived in Ohio for over a decade. Foreign sounds about right to me. I'm not even sure it's on this planet, TBH.

Oooh. Never heard of this "Candyman", but I'll check it out. Thanks! 🍭

I did not know that about "Nightmare on Elm Street", Totaji. Thank you. 🍂

Anyways whoever this is, it was very kind of him. 🗽👩🏻🚕🍂💛

Geez, this could be so many actors, I don't know where to start.

Even though this doesn't seem to be Bruce or Robert, they are both so kind. I'd talk about them more but i honestly need some caffeine before anything

Scandi Sanskrit said...

I thought that too but then I reread the BI and Enty said "decades ago" and IDK what horror film based on foreign source material was made decades ago. I can only think stuff like "The Omen".

Girl as in minor? Why is this a blind, he should be outed and lauded for being so decent and respectable and setting the right example.

Can't be Wes Craven, he's dead.

Bruce Campbell?

ELM STREET was not based directly on a foreign film. Tony Todd fits - Bernard Rose (director of CANDYMAN) and Clive Barker (author of the short story) are both Brits, and you'll probably recognise Todd's face if you Google him. Bruce Campbell (nice guy) doesn't fit, as Raimi is US born. Jeffrey Combs (REANIMATOR - also a nice guy) doesn't fit as director Stuart Gordon is American. Robert England (ELM STREET - nice guy) doesn't fit as director Wes Craven is US born.

That said, as a longtime horror buff, I've heard nothing but good things about the vast majority of horror actors (and most of the directors) who hit the con circuit.

Side note for whatever it's worth - Benicio Del Toro was a longtime subscriber to VIDEO WATCHDOG magazine, the scholarly digest aimed directly at cult / horror / fantasy movie home video collectors.

I've seen Tony Todd at several conventions. He comes off as a class act so I would not be surprised if this were him.

Wes Craven was born in Ohio. Can't be A Nightmare on Elm St.

Scandi Sanskrit said...

I would love this to be someone from "Rosemary's Baby" (because we know Rapist Polanski was foreign-born) but the story taht film was based on was written by an American author (which by Enty's standard would make it a non-foreign source).

It's a sad state of affairs when this is considered kindness. Surely this should just be normal reaction? But good for whoever helped this girl.

Ron Perlman?

Foreign Born Directo/Movie: Guillermo del Toro /Hellboy

I think someone's onto it with the Clive Barker as foreign-born source material etc.

It could well be Doug Bradley from the Hellraiser films, he's well-known to be a lovely guy.
