Blind Item #2

This foreign born former A+ list athlete was considered the greatest British soccer player of his time. When he was in his mid 30's, on a tour of the US, he and a friend raped a 15 year old in a hotel room.

George Best

The wording of this makes me think it's someone older than Beckham. Best is good, or Gary Lineker.

George Best.

Lineker? He has a shady past.

Rinky said...

Lineker is a piece of shit.

George Best played for multiple US clubs: Los Angeles Aztecs, Fort Lauderdale Strikers and the San Jose Earthquakes in the 1970s. He was in the USA in his thirties for sure. He even opened a club in California. So yeah, reckon it's him given the times.

Becks was playing in the US in his mid-30's not touring. Is it a clue that the blind cites "British", and not "English"?

George Best or Pele

Beckham was never the greatest British soccer player of his time. Best or Lineker. Best was a blackout drunk. I wonder how good he would have been had he lived a healthy life instead of drinking to excess daily.

Rooney

Just Paige said...

Yes @.robert. Beckham was never the best player, just the most marketable in the US.

cap'ngeech said...

Rooney could be good. But he still plays, no? And I feel like him and becks are still A+?

Mr Selfdestruct UK said...

Don't follow football or soccer for you yanks but it's either Rooney, Paul Gascoigne, Ryan Giggs

mw843 said...

Rooney's too young: He only turned 32 last October.

Rooney? If the victim was collecting her pension, then he's your man. Beckham would just bore them into submission.
I agree that this reads older. Pele would surely be A+++ (unless that'd make it too obvious). Otherwise...

Fukkit, let's go for the blindingly obvious: Diego Maradona.
He's a noted arsehole, coke fiend, and those of us old enough to remember Mexico '86 remember the orgy tabloid headlines that followed... gag!

.robert said...

How are Pele or Diego Maradona greatest British players?

Unknown said...

George Best. My husband said so.

Gordon Scott said...

Pete Best. Many don't remember that after McCartney and Lennon dumped him, he went back to his first love, wearing short pants and faking injuries. The man could take a tumble so well he was given a screen test by MGM.

Unknown said...

George Best. Take a look at other allegations made against him not long before his death. Accused of assault with a 13 year old. Where there's smoke...

Unknown said...

And he was considered one of the top soccer players in the world, of all time. An airport is named after him in Belfast. https://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-best-soccer-players-of-all-time.

Tim said...

I'll fight anyone who calls George Best British.

joshg g said...

George Best is Irish

Unknown said...

He's Northern Irish, from East Belfast. Those people don't consider themselves Irish. They consider themselves British. Now, what the British consider them is another tale altogether...

Neil said...

I think George Best. The niceties of English vs Irish vs British might possibly be unconsidered by an American??

Best had one of the greatest quotes...when asked one time where all his money had gone, he said he spent most of it on booze and women, while the rest he just wasted.

A.j. said...

Pele is Brazilian bro

Gazza? Went to rehab in Arizona while in his thirties. Not really a tour, but...

I won't even waste time commenting on people saying Pele or Maradona (rolling my eyes in disbelief) - there's no law saying you have to know a thing when you comment ;) As for Becks, though, apart from all other stuff that doesn't fit, he's probably as likely to be raping any women ever as his buddy Tom Cruise. Anyone who's into celebrity gossip would know that much, wouldn't they? ;)

There seems to be a pattern whereas some of these blinds are designed to make you think of a big name like Beckham when it's not him.

Same deal with the Someone Help Me blind which lots of people guessed was Spielberg but was not and seems to have been referring to the stunt coordinator Joel Kramer on the set of True Lies who molested Eliza Dushku.

So, what I'm saying is skeptical hats should be worn unless something is really, really, really obvious.

Sorry, I had forgotten the British bit when I got to typing (the Blogger opens up in a new tab for me and hopping between the two causes everything to refresh so its more trouble than its worth).
If there’s ever a similar blind for “Greatest Footballer in the World”, I’ll still plump for Maradona.

**pleasedon’tletotbeGeorgeBestpleasedon’tletitbeGeorgeBest**
Not so much for me, because I think he degenerated into an asshole who wasted his talent on the field, and could’ve really been a good pundit. But he meant the world to people like my parents and grandparents, from poor and marginalised places in Ireland trying to get by in 1960s, London. My late father basically had a vigil, rosary beads never far away, in front of Sky News when George was on the way out.
On his nationality, although there are plenty of people in Norn Iron who consider themselves either British or Irish, there are plenty who have a dual National identity. While he wouldn’t have reacted negatively to being called British he regarded himself as Irish. To that end had always said that there should’ve been an all-island national team (like in rugby), as having a small ROI (even smaller then as Jack Charlton was the first to really exploit the “Grandmother Rule”) and even tinier NI pool. You’d potentially have a really fine line-out in the likes of himself, Harry Gregg, Johnny Giles, which could’ve gone places...even today the same applies.

There’s another name in the back of my head, but I’m not sure he spent much time in the US. Unless, of course, this happened during the 94 World Cup, which would’ve certainly included touring. BUT, famously, no British team qualified. So we’d be looking at British players playing for countries under the Granmother Rule I mentioned earlier.

George Best. I wouldnt be surprised if there are others

George best sprung to my mind because he is well known for being badly behaved and he played in the US- the usual stories of assault, sex and drunkenness - he even admitted stealing from a woman's purse to buy alcohol. although I agree that there are probably a few more. Maybe he is too obvious but that's who I thought of.

Definitely sounds like Best. Famous playboy and drunk, liked young models of the Miss World type. There's only so many players could fit the description of best British footballer of their generation.

"greatest British soccer player" could be interpreted in a number of ways. If it means that the player is English, that leaves out Giggs (Welsh) and Best (Irish). It could also mean that the player in question played in the top English league (before EPL, English 1st division), and it could be any number of people (not named Pele or Maradonna, sheesh).

Beckham has lived in the US, so why mention "on a tour?"

Rooney is still active.

I imagine many ppl hate Lineker because he is outspoken and liberal, but I doubt it's him.

Gazza maybe.

Or, oooo Alan Shearer????

Here’s a handy guide to some of the top British (of one hue or another) footballers who played in the US.
https://mlsgb.com/2015/03/18/top-10-british-footballers-to-play-in-america/
Some very interesting names for those who played for more than one club and some very famous names.

Agreed, AIP, regarding have an Irish national team along same lines as rugby. But this is 100% George Best and his friend.

Everyone, do even the tiniest bit of research on George B, and you'll find a trail of violence against women and assault. Behaviour on the pitch bears no correlation off it.

Flashy Vic said...

Fuck the all ireland football team.
Leave that to the rugby perverts.
Sounds like George Best sadly.
0Not too many from down his way think themselves Irish. And whatever Best mah have been said to have said on the subject, his passport was a British one.

I like the Lineker guess as he is definitely a creepy self righteous perverted son of a bitch and would not be surprised if he starts featuring on future BIs but while he was a very goodfootballer he in no way can be described as the greatest British football player of his time.
He was eventhe greatest on his teams at the time. Not while Paul Gascoigne was on the same piitch, thats for sure.

Hey, Gascoigne is a decent guess. Brilliant footballer but so so so many issues.

longtimereader said...

This is best, even at his peak, beckham wasn't even the best player in his team. The george best stories are legendary, his son callum also has a bad rep. Lineker is a known hound but not creepy.
