MTV Gets Out The Kneepads
Apparently MTV doesn't feel it can attract big names anymore unless it promises to give the artists awards for showing up. I'm not sure why MTV even calls the damn things Video Music Awards anyway because when is the last time you saw a full, uninterrupted video on MTV? Yeah, the entire damn thing without Beth from Indianapolis screaming about how her BFF is the greatest.
If you haven't figured out what the hell I am talking about it is the fact that MTV gave Britney Spears three awards last night. Three of them. For her video Pieces Of Me. Was the song ok? Yeah it was ok. Was it good enough to be the f**king video of the year? Hell no. If anyone out there thinks that her song was the best song of the year then you are brain dead. So you say, "Ent, this is about the videos." OK, fine. Did you see the video? If you haven't it is below. It is worse than the song. It looks like some high school kid shot a bunch of dance team tryouts and set it to music. In addition to the biggest award of the night, she won Best Pop Video and Best Female Video. If they could have figured out a way to call her a man, she would have won all those as well. What do you think that all of the other artists feel about the situation? You think Mariah is happy? Rihanna? Even Katy Perry has the right to be ticked off. Wouldn't you be ticked off that you didn't win because you couldn't deliver ratings like Britney? So for 22 words, she got three awards. I can just see her dad and Larry Rudolph negotiating with MTV. We want an award for every seven words. What is she God?
This was a charade to get Britney Spears to come to the show. She comes and opens the show she gets a few awards. Now, did Britney look good? Hell yes she looked good. Better than she has in years. But this is not a contest about looks. It is supposed to be an award show. That is how they bill it, but it isn't. What it is, is a bunch of suits over at Viacom who said lets nominate Britney for that Pieces Of S**t video and and then if she agrees to come to the show she wins. It will be the comeback story of the year, plus she is like the Susan Lucci of the VMA's. That is because the VMA's actually gasp, used to present awards to the actual best videos of the year. Later it became more of a song thing, but still, it had some respectability. It has none now.

Oh, and making Russell Brand come out and apologize for saying crap about the Jonas Brothers. Who do you think did that? One of the Jonas Brothers cried, and MTV about had a heart attack and so told Russell to stop having sex in the bathroom backstage and come out and apologize to the meal tickets.
What MTV needs to do is just let the general public vote on every award. Sure, the Jonas Brothers would win every category they are nominated in, but hell, at least they did something this year. At least we know they are popular. Does anyone in the world think Britney Spears would have won any of the awards if the general public got to vote? No. Would she have won if only music critics got to vote? No. So why on earth is MTV trying to pass this off as legitimate? It isn't, and they should be ashamed of themselves. The only thing that would have been more disturbing is if somehow Heidi Montag won an award. I'm actually surprised they didn't throw her a bone and invent some category that she could win.

Apparently we can watch this tonight over here but sod that. After reading the papers and websites, it's clear Shiteney was used by MTV and using MTV to whitewash the damage done last year. So thank you, Enty, for speaking the truth!

it seemed as if she was "rewarded" for getting her act together. Good for her, but not for the artists that deserved to win.
mtv sucks. it was great at first but they sold out and are just another bullshit commercial outlet. where's the surprise?

Sorry to disagree but I love the video and song. Im happy she won and truly believe that she deserved to. Black out is probably her best work to date and I am excited to see her next chapter
I was pretty excited that I was home alone last night so I could watch the show (which I am way too old for) without constant commentary from my husband who likes to pretend he hates everything pop culture even though he's obviously fascinated by it...*L*. I thought the show was pretty boring though. Britney did look good, and I thought Russell Brand did a great job, but I think about the VMA's that were such an event for me and my friends back in the early 90's. I realise that I don't get much of it now because it's just not what I'm into, and it's not for my generation, but I just can't see anyone being as excited about it now, as we were back then.
And how THE FUCK is Linkin Park ROCK??? Slash even laughed out loud when he read the name. Made me giggle.

Speaking of Def Leppard...I heard a song the other day by some new nondescript pop tart, the song was called "don't call me baby" and the verse...was totally "Love Bites" by Def Leppard. I know that nothing new is ever going to be written ever again, but sometimes when it's that obvious, it makes me wonder how much one can get away with...

Wait, wasn't the "Piece Of Me" video the one where the production team waited around for over 8 HOURS for her to show up? i.e. The $500,000 video-shoot that she completely FLAKED OUT on until the record label called her and threatened to give the shoot to an unknown female artist at her expense? Harriet, how would you classify Linkin Park? I understand Shadow of the Day is their suckiest song, but I do like Bleed It Out, What I've Done and others.
Shakey, I would classify them as "pop". I'd like to add that I have nothing against pop at all, I am quite a sucker for a catchy melody, but "rock" to me signifies something a bit more raw than LP.
I think she looked great at the VMA's, not trashy or cheap or sleazy.
I happen to love the "Piece of Me" video. I thought she nailed it in this video the first time I saw it and every time since, including just now on CDAN. It's a great video, she's adorable in it, the song's not too bad, but it's Britney that makes you want to move.
My hat's off to her.

Look at the rest of the celebrities that have fallen apart.
After going through the rapid spiral down with drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, public shame, legal troubles, family drama, etc. they don't have the popularity, the credibility, or the willingness to climb back out and up.
Britney's proved she's strong.

Re: "Piece Of Me". It was co-written by Robyn, Swedish pop singer recently hyped by Perez Hilton. You know how we have been discussing singers who don't do all the singing themselves? Well, this track was originally recorded by Robyn and was going to be on her album. Then she and the other writers were offered a shitload of money for the song, and so Britney got it. But Robyn's vocals are still on the track, quite obviously so. Yes, Britney is singing but her voice is mixed with Robyn's.
