Roman Polanski Has To Stay In Jail

Roman Polanski's bid to get bail while he awaits an official request from the United States on his extradition was denied today in Switzerland. The judge there thought Roman was a flight risk. Duh? You think so? If he had been freed on bail he would have been in France within a few hours and that would have been the last he ever left that country.

"We continue to be of the opinion that there is a high risk of flight."

The United States has still not formally requested his extradition. Polanski was arrested on September 26th and it is now October 6th. How long does it take to fill out some paperwork? It isn't like they didn't know he was going to be arrested. For their part the Swiss seem to be getting a little frustrated with the United States and said, "I assume this is a priority case in the United States."

To me that says, he isn't sure and probably wonders what the hold up is also.

He requested house arrest while in his chalet in Gstaad. He didn't get it. Good.

The Swiss can't hold him forever on the promise of a US extradition request. If the arrest was planned, as the FBI (?) has said, why the hold-up?

It would be shameful if Polanski has to be released and escapes justice again.

Hurrah!  Wouldn't it be nice if he ended up in GP in
California?  Then he would get to experience the
crime he committed, but as the victim.  Poetry.

I hope the extradition happens soon and he gets his just desserts. What a terrible case that really is :(

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

I can't believe people continue to defend him. HE BROKE THE LAW! He was charged and never served his time. Why should he just be let off? Just because he made good movies before I was born, doesn't make him above the law. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

ms_w, he can probably drag extradition out for many months if it ever happens at all.

I think it's perfect!!!!! It's what the prosecutors here would do. Normally it irks me, BUT - think about it....

There's a lot of support in Hollywood for him. The governor can step in, there can be political pressure, etc.

Take your own sweet time bringing him back. Only bring him back when he's about ready to get kicked from jail. That way, when he does come back and gets kicked straight out of jail, he will have done his stupid time!

There is something fishy with this going on. Why wouldn't the authorities already have the papers prepared if this was planned in advance? They knew the award was being given and Polanski was going to be in the country, they agreed to arrest him and now nothing?

I think the Swiss will let him go, interesting I wonder who managed to get the biggest favor in the world and why.

I read somewhere that the U.S. has 60 days to request extradition and that the paperwork should only take a few days.

My opinion: he should be treated as any non-famous person would be in this situation.

So that said, is that what's happening? Is he getting a pass? Or is he getting more hassled than a non-famous person would be?

I honestly don't know, but have been musing on it...

Is their a lot of Red Tape involved for the extradition??

International extradition is probably one of the most drawn out, political, and bureaucratic of all legal maneuvers. Shit, I'd be shocked if anything remotely resembling extradtion takes place in the next 6 months.

The Einhorn extradition (from France, not Switzerland) took 4 YEARS.

I like the idea of him sitting in jail for a while, but this means the whole thing just continues to drag out for the victim. For her sake, this needs to get settled one way or the other as soon as possible.

bill maher did a little bit on polanski the other night and i agree with him.
he said if this had been a cameraman on a polanski movie, this would have been dealt with long ago.

he also said he has no pity for polanski. he said 'he gave her a quaalude and fucked her in the ass.'

so to hell with all these creeps defending him because he's a 'genius'. that's what he did to a 13 year old girl.

Boo hoo.

I think the US is *intentionally* dragging this out. Consider this: the original judge wanted him to serve all of the 90 days in a psych unit. If they make the Swiss hold him for 60 days IN JAIL and they decide not to extradite, some measure of justice has been achieved (not great, but at least the man spends time in jail).

What's more disturbing about all of this is that Polanski NEVER paid the $500,000 to Geimer that was agreed upon in the 90s. Not only did he literally get away with raping and sodomizing a child, he got to do it all over again when she was an adult by reneging on the civil agreement.

Zandra, I agree completely. Either the fix is in or someone got cold feet.

I agree nancer - he drugged a 13 year girl, then he anally raped A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL. Then he pled guilty to doing it all. Then he fled the country before he could be sentenced. WTF is anyone defending him for? Also, let's not forget his relationship with Nastassja Kinski - He was 41 and she was 15.

As Chris Rock Says

He's fighting extradition. He's allowed to do this. When he loses, he'll be returned to the US. Nothing is being put on hold by anyone. It's making it way through legal channels.
The int'l arrest warrant was issued in 2005.

yay for the swiss! boo hiss at polanski's hollywood "supporters".

Judi said...

Polanski's supporters, period. Has nothing to do with Hollywood. The overwhelming majority of industry workers are family people who do NOT support him. No matter where these supporters are, the voices of non-supporters are louder.

I am thinking the purpose is to make damn sure Mr. Polanski is nice an uncomfortable in his little cell. They will get around to it when they get around to it.

Polanski has made a mockery of them for awhile .. I am sure they want a little payback and to remind him exactly who has the power now. And I say.. GOOD ON THEM!

What really sucks is I am in love with woody allen and as we all know he has his share of controversial drama on his own and when i heard he was one of the loudest supporters of Polanski I was like 'sit down, shut up and be quiet so the few remaining supports of YOU there are dont turn on you!' Seriously, all the supporters of Polanski in hollywood read like a whose who of douche bags, I mentally have them in my head as people i will not see in theatres any longer. Those who have tried to justify this by saying she stuff about her or saying how long ago it was are pathetic, why dont we start pardoning all the pedos then? this is disgusting and should be over with right away, this victim has been through enough, and fuck france for not cooperating, i wonder how many poor french young girls have suffered under this man?

Jasmine said...

oh, and Bill Mahers comment alone makes me love him all over again, ditto Chris Rock

I hope no one who posted things about Polanski aren't the same people boo-hooing all over when Michael Jackson died, cause that man was a pedophile. Straight up.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

* are the same people. Sorry, it's mad early.
