Wear A Helmet While Riding A Horse

It amazes me how many people willingly wear a helmet while bike riding but when riding the back of a huge animal like a horse and jumping with said horse they go without a helmet. Nicollette Sheridan is one of those people. According to The National Enquirer she came within a few inches of probably being paralyzed over the holidays when she chose to ride her horse and jump it without wearing a helmet.

At some point she was thrown from the horse and landed on her head. Her boyfriend saw her bloody and battered and decided that he should take her to the hospital. You think? Because of the way she landed, her injuries were fairly minor and she was sent home. About three inches to the left and this wouldn't be some little blurb about a horse riding accident, she would be getting ready to be in a wheelchair for life. Wear a helmet people! You put one on your kids for a reason. Put one on yourself.

Think about poor Christopher Reeves.

wear Aet..? huh is your title fucked up or am i out of the horsey loop?

Christopher Reeves was the first person I thought of, but no sure a helmet would have saved him. He broke his neck. That said, Nicollete, WEAR A HELMET NEXT TIME!

Alice D Millionaire said...

Sunnyside I was about to say the same thing. I agree you should wear a helmet but it won't save you from breaking your neck or back.

Okay did Enty re-edit this heading? Cus I could have sworn when I read it earlier it read very differently.....

Apparently Enty is a quick typer as well as being quick to edit.

Her form blows.

did we learn nothing from natasha richardson? can't believe NS was such an idiot.

Paralysis from broken necks & backs aside, brain injuries can be devastating! Stop worrying about your hair and put on a helmet, Nicolette!

Brain & neck injuries aside - I'll bet with that tank top she had some pretty good road rash from the gravel, too.

I know this is different, but it's similar. My husband rides motorcycles, and had a bad accident on the freeway a few years ago. (A turkey flew into his bike, which flipped end over end into the median.) Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet and protective gear, which saved his life. The armored jacket was shredded at the elbows, and his knees were pretty badly skinned, but he was alive and standing when the emergency crew arrived. He was very, very lucky.

(And, yes, when we refer to this incident we always think of WKRP's Thanksgiving turkey give-a-way episode.)

Wear a helmet, people.

Christopher Reeve was wearing a helmet when he fell, which prevented brain injury. So then his wife would have had to deal with a completely paralyzed vegetable for 10 years. Think of all he was able to accomplish because of that helmet.

Oh...and you should wear a helmet while riding a scotter or motorcycle and I see lot of people not wearing them.

I believe you can now get riding helmets w/neck braces as well, just to be on the safe side--IIRC, Christopher Reeve was one of the people pushing for their use, as wearing one might have spared him his injury. They're not very common (which is why he wasn't wearing one when he had his accident--who knew?), but it sounds like something that would be worth investigating.

WEAR YOUR HELMETS, PEOPLE!!!

Side note, I've heard that almost no one in Europe wears a helmet when biking. Just seems odd.

RocketQueen said...

@figgy - I was in Amsterdam (land of bikes) in October and you're right. Bikers bikers everywhere and no helmets.

PotPourri said...

I thought Christopher Reeves was wearing a helmut? But honestly, it takes a 5 mph crash and you are dead, where as in the same crash, you stand up and walk away because of a helmet. BTW, most bicycle crashes are at much higher rates of speed because of the vehicles involved.

Linnea said...

in sweden, its the law when you are a kid. riding a bike=helmet.

and when it comes to motor cycles, its the law ALL AGES.

when i was a kid, i got hit by a car wearing my bike helmet. it split in two. that would have been my head. scary shit.

You guys are right - Christopher Reeve was wearing a helmet so it didn't prevent being paralyzed but did prevent brain injury. Still sad about it.

Dumb, dumb, dumb. I have fallen and hit my head WITH the helmet on and got a concussion. She is lucky!

A helmet will not save you from a broken neck, but it will save you from possibly fatal head injuries. Anyone remember Natasha Richardson?

if i didn't read the the post, and just looked at the picture, her slutty outfit and her t*ts against the horse would leave me to believe that this was a screen shot of "Debbie Does Seabiscuit"

MCH said...

Normally, if she was just casually trail riding, I would say she didn't absolutely have to wear one but she was jumping, she needed a helmet.

The Natasha Richardson thing scared the hell out of me, so no one can be too careful anymore.

Some people are just morons. I used to live in a backwoods section of the south where parents would let their kids go out on ATV's helmetless. Idiots.

@ Babs I LOVE that WKRP.

That epi. use to be on HULU.

I own and ride horses about 4 days a week. I wear a helmet every time. Most barns will not even let you into a jumping arena without one, too much liability! Trust me when I say this, the ground may look all squeasy and soft, IT IS NOT. Most of the footing around barns is hard cement, add in cars, dogs and other idiots on their horses and you are talking disaster in the making! Nicolette just wanted the perfect picture for her non-horsey crowd! what an idiot!!!

I like NS. And I'm still mad that TPTB killed her off on Desperate Housewives.

I agree she should be wearing a helmet. I have to disagree about her form however. The only thing wrong with her is that she over arched her back. She has a fantastic leg, though her heel could be lower, her release at the apex of the fence is perfect, her eyes are looking ahead, and she looks like a very competent rider. She may have ducked her body slightly too low instead of letting the horse come up to her.

Sorry! I'm a former jumper rider and hunter equitation champ.

Yes, helmets for horseback riding, and skiing too!

I have two friends who had bad biciclying accidents and probably would've died without their helmets.

I didn't know Christopher Reeve was wearing one, but think of how much good he did with the time he was given after the accident. Thank goodness he didn't have brain damage that might have prevented that.

Sunnyhorse said...

She looks pretty good to me as well, although I'm guessing that George Morris would tell her to shorten those leathers a hole or two -- that's why she can't get her heel down properly. (It wouldn't surprise me if that was part of the reason she fell on her head.) She also needs to have less loop in the rein -- it's nice to release properly, but that's too much slack.

fuglyhorseoftheday said...

Her form is better than 95 percent of the celebs on horses that we see. She is ducking, her heels could be better but overall not bad at all.

That said, I have harped repeatedly on my blog that helmets are a must for jumping and that all responsible parents put one on their child each and every time they are on a horse. If you jump, you WILL fall sometimes...it's easy for the horse to misjudge and crash even if he isn't actively misbehaving.

That said, love NS - she's involved in horse rescue and I've met her and talked horses and she was a truly nice person.

Most barns will not let you ride without a helmet, and in things like 4H, if you are a 4Her, you can't even TOUCH a horse without one. Even if you're aloud to ride without one, be responsible and just put one on! Even if you've been riding for 50 years, it doesn't f**n matter! I you ride horses, you are going to fall. It's just a fact of life. It just bugs me to see people trotting and cantering on cement or gravel without a helmet, and then their horse trips and they fall and split their head open, then blame it on the horse, then put a perfectly good, obediant horse down for a incident that was completely their falt and would not have happened if they were properly aiding and riding their horse and if they had just put a flippin helmet on! I know someone who was jumping her horse, and fell off. The impact split the helmet in half and saved her life.

Unknown said...

Oh yeah I have to agree, her back formed SUCKED! Learn to ride a horse properly before you jump heaghts like that.

Unknown said...

Wearing a helmet is a no brainer.
But the real concern with this photo is just how completely inept the rider is. Loose reins, perched, weak leg. Wow! Back in the day, a rider like this would not be allowed to canter, let alone jump. Praise the horse - he's fantastic despite the riders complete lack of strength, fitness and technique!
