Want To Get Skinny? Eat Nothing

Two of the tabloids this week highlight different skinny women in bikinis. In Touch has the evil one from Real Housewives D.C.. Michaele Salahi, poses in a bikini for the magazine and then says she is not an anorexic and that she eats plenty and that if people would get out and move they would look just like her. Eating plenty huh? Want to know what she eats everyday? In the morning she has a bowl of cereal and at night she has a salad with some grilled chicken in it. No lunch or anything else the entire day. Umm, how does she even have the energy to move around. If I ate that little I would be slumped in a chair begging for food. Just in case you were curious she would also like to have a boob job, botox and any other plastic surgery and she would like it all within the next six months. Umm, yeah.

Not to be outdone, Real Housewife Bethenny Frankel says the way she lost 33 pounds after pregnancy was to "Taste everything, eat nothing." Umm, that sounds like one of the favorite tricks of anorexia. So, although the tabloids don't encourage everyone to go out there and be skinny their words and actions show otherwise. Oh, they might pretend they like to put curvy people on their covers but what they have done is put two incredibly skinny women in bikinis in their magazine and said they basically don't eat. That is the only way you will look like them and the tabloids seem to be celebrating it. That is wrong, wrong wrong. If you are naturally skinny, then great. You are just as sexy as the curvy person or the overweight person. What I don't like is they are saying the only way to be sexy is to be thin and to not eat. That is wrong.

These magazines are completely hypocritical FOS on weight issues.

They'll gleefully do these articles, and then turn around and throw overweight pics of stars on their covers to signify "trouble" And then the other extreme...skeletal pics of Nicole Richie/Mary Kate/Tori and how worried they are and how unhealthy it is.

You shouldn't starve yourself but most people consume way too many calories. I gained weight when I started dating my boyfriend. He eats all the time and I would eat when he ate. I finally had to just stop eating so much and have started to loose the extra. I consume food but just a lot less. Once you get used to eating less again you don't feel as hungry.

Bethany Frankel's baby was gorgeous, and she has a killer body. But who wants to get it the starvation way?

"Once you get used to eating less again you don't feel as hungry."

but shouldn't you be eating when you feel hungry? there is no miracle diet plan...eat less crap and move a lot more.

Was that first pic supposed to Michaele Salahi? It looks like one the OC bimbo, and looks positively FAT compared to what Salahi must look like in a bikini! *shudders at the thought*

I love you, Enty.

Funny, my whole life I was skinny and then hit 40yo and it crept on and food cravings began and I let them get out of control.

They always say you must eat breakfast, which I always did (a decently healthy one most days). But I got the idea to cut out breakfast and the whole thing changed for the better and the lbs. are going back down little by little! I can wear short this summer that I couldn't get zipped last summer so it must be working, even though the scales only show about a 6-7 lb. loss.

And, by not eating breakfast, I don't get so hungry all day long like I always did when I ate breakfast.

whatever...I'll take it!!!

I'm wondering how much photoshopping the magazine did to the pics to put them with the story, too. Even though these women are emaciated, it appears as if Michaele Salahi's leg has been oddly cropped/smoothed and Bethanny Frankel's tummy has been toned and her silhouette has been smoothed.

How can any of this be considered a "real" representation of how to get and stay thin?

selenakyle said...

And let's not forget that bulimia is alive and well, and also how well coke kills the appetite dead, like Raid kills bugs dead...on contact!

These dumb c*nts ain't fooling NObody.

Bethenny Frankel might have been born with a wide jaw, but come ON. And Salahi's teeth are not real. Her real ones probably melted out of her mouth ages ago.

Just Another Blonde said...

I always get in trouble on weight posts lol, because I am of the opinion that most Americans could stand to lose weight and eat better... it is not healthy to be grossly overweight. A little extra weight won't kill you, but obese is not helpful.

Emaciated is not it, either. Eating good, clean food, moving your ass, and not using excuses to eat whatever the hell convenience food you want just because it is there goes a long way.

And yes I practice what I preach, every day. I lost over 170 lb and keep it off by doing that, every single day. It sucks sometimes. It's not fun a lot of the time, but it works. I probably even lost too much, but I work at maintaining a thin body because I take it very seriously.

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

Slightly OT, but today on the subway I saw this anorexic and thought to myself, how could you ever think that stick thin body looks good? And the fur?! My God the fur!! Like, your body is DYING, lady. The kicker? I saw her check herself out in the window and she frowned. Totally tragic how their minds work.

selenakyle said...

Huh! That really is Michaele Salahi in that top photo, I checked.

Looks just like one of the RHoOC wives (Bridget, maybe?) and looks pretty dang healthy to me. I figured she would look like a scrawny, bone-clacking skeleton.

My bad!

selenakyle said...

Oh yeah! I saw that fur yesterday on a lady in line in front of me. It was creepy as hell. She stunk a little, too.

angelina said...

I rather enjoyed the big bowl of au gratin potatoes I was munching on as I read this :)

MISCH said...

I can't believe Bethenny Frankel gained 33 pounds....the baby was soo tiny...
All of this sends a bad message...

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

The fur is a fucking bad sign. And the smell was probably just her body decaying while she is alive. Honestly, I just want to throw a burlap sack over people like that and take them to the nearest mental hospital.

Meg said...

@Just Another Blonde - 170lbs??? Wow! That is awesome!

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

@Just Another Blonde

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think I recall you mentioning before that you used to have an eating disorder. Hate to ask, but is that how you lost that much weight? I mean initially lost the weight?

MnGddess said...

In Bethenny's defense, I have a few girlfriends who were in great shape before pregnancy and bounced back right after. They didn't pig out during pregnancy, but they weren't anorexic either.

mooshki said...

LOL, Angelina! I'm adding you to my "love" list.

Just Another Blonde said...

@Sue Ellen- yep, I was an overeater, bulimic and then ano. I struggle still with ano thoughts. Initially I lost most of my weight (about 130 lb of it) by restricting, throwing up, and exercising multiple hours a day (like 4+). I got my head on straight and I lost the last 40 and now maintain by working out normally (maybe 1 hr 4 or 5-ish days a week?), eating organic, healthy food in a decent calorie range, and going to therapy.

As an aside, I also got inspired to study nutrition through this and I'm working on being an RD sprcializing in ED recovery and food therapy.

Just Another Blonde said...

And no I never had the fur or the smell, but my fingertips turned red and I still have yellow teeth (although thankfully not halitosis and gums/enamel are fine).

I probably lost a bit too much- went from 290 to about 115-120 depending on the day and I'm 5'5.

brendalove@gmail.com said...

I was thinking about what Selenakyle was saying about breakfast....and it has been my experience also that no breakfast = less hunger later on in the day, and easier weight loss. But yet all these nutritionists scream that WE MUST EAT BREAKFAST! Do you think they could possibly be wrong?

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

@Just anotha

Wow. Good for you for getting out of that ED circle. I went to HS with a girl who was anorexic and bulimic at the same time, until they took her away to a mental hospital. Even then, after she got out, it was a struggle for her everyday (probably still is). Also, it's amazing that you want to help others who struggle with ED's. I really believe that the only people who can help people that have a problem such as that, or drug/ alcohol issues are those that have gone through it themsevles.

Thanks for sharing with me. (And everyone else.)

selenakyle said...

@ brendalove, yeah, I wonder whether my metab is gonna gear down too much, though, which is why they say you *must* eat first thing upon waking or your metab will crank down. But thus far the no-breakfast thing is working for me.

@JustAnotherBlonde -- good for you! Big-time kudos.

RocketQueen said...

Totally agree, Cecilia00. I've given hoping they'll change, but I can't help but be annoyed as hell.

BigMama said...

My baby is 5 months old and this kinda stuff just depresses the hell out of me. *sigh* good thing my girls are worth it.

messystation said...

Bethenny Frankel makes me ill. I read an article in People where she she disparaged her mother for having an eating disorder, and claims that she never even dabbled after what her mother went through (yeah, right, JAW). Then she brands her company on "skinny", not "Healthy Girl".
She only gained 30 some pounds while she was pregnant and her baby was born prematurely. On the Housewives reunion, she said she had lost most of her baby weight, and this is her SECOND bikini shoot for a magazine celebrating yet more weight loss. And her advice "eat nothing." Normally this would not be such a big deal to me, but she writes books and conducts seminars to empower women to live a healthy life style. Not to mention that her relationship to alcohol seems not all that healthy either.

califblondy said...

My Mom always said that if she ate breakfast she was hungry all day.

JustBlonde - good for you. I've also had struggles with not eating and it's amazing how the brain can control the appetite. Losing as much weight as you have and getting control over how you got there is tough. I wish I would eat healthier.

I don't think either picture of these two ladies is real. Both are wayyyy skinny. For once they were photoshopped to ADD a little weight.

I am a breakfast person and will loudly agree with anyone who says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I wake up and I am immediately STARVING!!! Well, my body shape says otherwise, but my stomach is just growling and I feel weak and irritated until I've had something to eat *L*. But yes, if I have a huge breakfast, I do tend to get hungry again sooner. I know some skinny people who don't eat breakfast...and then not much for lunch...and something light for dinner. They just don't LIKE anything that much. They don't get excited about food like I (and most people I consider friends) do. Where you eat something and your eyes well up a little because it is Just So Good. I don't think that has ever happened to Bethenny Frankel.

I think it's really important to remember that everyone's body and eating habits are different...there is no such thing as a diet that will work for all. I might argue that there is no such thing as a diet that works, period, but that is an argument I don't wanna get into today. I'm going out for Italian with my husband tonight. It's 3:30 pm and I am already SO EXCITED!

@Harriet Hellfire

Amen! I worked with a naturally skinny woman who just didn't get hungry. When I am hungry my stomach grumbles and I feel lightheaded. I am an apple shape even though I work out 5 times a week, have a personal trainer, and only eat when I'm hungry and try and eat really healthy. We would be friends Harriet because I too like to look forward to good food. Have a great dinner tonight.

I like eating too much to ever become anorexic. And I'm too paranoid about my teeth (don't even get me started on my quirky phobias) to ever be bulimic.

It's weird that the US has this strange dichotomy: our media pushes us to be stick thin, yet a startling number of people are obese in the US. If only we could find a happy medium.

Enty - It's so refreshing to hear a man advocate healthy bodies. Especially one who works in the entertainment biz. You rock, big guy.

Enjoy your birthday dinner, Harriet :)

sunnyside1213 said...

Oh no. All this food talk and now I am hungry.

lanasyogamama said...

I'm not a fan of all this, but at least they are admitting that they don't eat. Nothing annoys me more than the stick skinny ladies who insist they eat "all the time".

mooshki said...

It's about having the right kind of breakfast. If it has any sugar, you start the sugar high/low roller coaster that makes you eat all day. But like Harriet said, different things work for different people.

Jasmine said...

As soon as I read this post from Enty I was very interested to hear what you all would say on the subject.
I read all your comments and fell in love with all of you again, as usual.
:)
I have lost almost 70 lbs now (and counting). Side note: Just Another Blonde, you rock!
About the breakfast thing I have found that when I eat cereal like Kashi Go Lean which has uber amounts of fiber and protein and whole grains I am not as hungry verses say having a traditional egg/bread/meat breakfast. I think the key is to fill up on lots of stuff that will make you fuller longer because it really is about stoking the 'fire' of your metabolism. Every coupla hours you need to throw 'kindling' on your fire so it continues to burn. This was how it was explained to me a my school by a nutritionalist.
I have lost the 70 lbs completly healthy by keeping a calorie journal and exercising. I told myself early on that I would abuse my body by hurting it and putting on it all this self shame and hate. I still honor who and what I was and call my old self, even at 250 lbs, beautiful.

Jasmine said...

*er, obviously this was meant to say ' I told myself early on that I WOULDN'T abuse my body'
lol

I thought the first picture was Heidi Montag.

The Naturopath I'm consulting with did mention breakfast as being very important, but protein needs to be a part of it so you don't become hungry before lunch - it helps you last longer. Stress is terrible for overeating, especially since it's normal to choose something with more sugar in it which exacerbates the problem.

I have to admit since I've added protein in the morning, I'm less hungry during the day.

Beta said...

TOTALLY agree with you ENty!!
well said!

I also thought the first pic was Heidi! Last weekend on History channel they had a series on the 7 Deadly Sins. Remembering what Fish Sticks head looked like in the box, I immediately turned to that channel. They were doing the one on gluttony. It changed my way of thinking a bit. I don't think you should always be eating when you are hungry. Not a good thing. Especially when cancer is occurring more and more in people who are overweight. More than a few of my friends are making me sad now as I watch them go through chemo, radiation and drugs. Congrats to everyone who is eating healthy and feeling great!
