Jennifer Hudson Will Be At Murder Trial Of William Balfour

This morning the trial gets started in the deaths of Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew. It is hard to believe it has been three years since all of this happened in Chicago. The jury selection process begins today after the 150 potential jurors had to fill out a 26 page Q&A about such items as what they think of Jennifer Hudson, her songs and her movies. No one knows for sure whether Jennifer will testify during the trial.

I'm not sure why it has taken three years to get this trial to the point where it is ready to begin. I also have not seen any evidence which shows that William Balfour did not commit the crimes of which he is accused.

I love the strength and Grace this woman has exhibited during the entire ordeal. Amazing

Agreed Philly. I would think going through a trial like this - would be like reliving the entire ordeal. Prayers to her and her family through the entire process!

The reason this has taken so long to go to trial is because Cook County, IL (aka "Crook" County) has a broken justice system filled with incompetant prosectutors and politically appointed judges.

Example: Friday night a man named James Brown was shot and killed a block from where he shot a kid and shot at and missed two others. How long did he serve for attempting to kill three people? 2.5 years.

Since the States Atty reduced the charges down from attempted murder to a charge they could win without much effort, the judge only sentenced him to 5 years. When they counted time served awaiting trial, he only served 6 months in state prison.

But I guess you could say James Brown ended up getting the death penalty...

I know that Balfour dated her sister, but was that his own son that he killed? Even crazy ass people that kill their own kids are compelled to make it a murder suicide after killing their own children. Wtf.

@Sarah--I've wondered the same thing, but I'm pretty sure it's not his son. The father was someone else.

I don't see how an attorney doesn't understand why a murder trial would take three years to go...

Poor Jennifer. I hope she has a lot of love surrounding her to help her through this. Such a tragedy.

I am as liberal as it comes.

But it's moments like these when I wish I could believe in the Death Penalty.

Some people should not be able to exist.

Poor Jennifer.

Chicago is insanely corrupt & I've been misfortunate enough to see the inner workings up close in different areas. Three years to trial is speedy there. If a big name wasn't attached it would probably take longer.

Is it a death penalty case? I practice in KY and it would be a death case here. Death penalty cases take a long time to go to trial because of all the work that's involved.

I agree with those who said they admire how JHud has handled all this. I truly feel for her.

Totally agree with Pilly. I can't begin to fathom how difficult this would be for Jennifer and her family. I only hope that if the accused is truly guilty of these horrific crimes that he gets what's coming to him. Rotting away in solitary for the next 70+ years sounds more than fair to me.

I believe Balfour was the Jennifer's sister's recent ex boyfriend and not the father of Jen's nephew.

I hope Jennifer and her sister go sit in the front row every single day and stare this animal down. Very brave of her to go--her presence will bring a lot of attention to the trial and hopefully will make sure this guy is put away for ever.

ITA, pilly.

I just pray that justice is served for Jennifer and the rest of her family.

Illinois has a moratorium on the death penalty. IIRC, George Ryan imposed that shortly before he went to prison.

Cook County is more corrupt than anyone's wildest imagination. It makes Detroit look like candyland
