Blind Items Revealed

February 29, 2012

One of my favorite all time divas has herself quite the mouth. She also has certain beliefs about what songs should be played and what songs should not. Our diva used to be A list back in the day and is probably still and will always be a B list. She is also a nominee/winner of the big one. Anyway she was at a club and this disco version of a classic song comes on. Our diva goes over to the DJ and starts screaming at him. Oh, this is after she has hurled a cocktail glass at him and the glasses of all her companions. "Don't you ever play that f**king song again. If you do, I will have you fired. She is turning over in her grave." She then went back to the table and did a line of coke.

Isn't Liza a bit old to be hitting the clubs?

It must have been the Ethel Merman disco version. Can't say that I blame her.

Liza. And the song was Over the Rainbow. At least that's my guess.

Obviously the original version of the song is from a deceased artist. And saying "disco version" makes me think this isn't too recent. I mean, who days disco anymore?

Team Liza on this one. The DJ had to know she was in the house. Rude.

Yeah, remember the 'disco version' of the Star Wars theme (it's awesome, btw)? Discoing songs was all the rage, maybe in Liza's Studio 54 days. I think the blind in undated, otherwise it would have been WAY too obvious.

She definitely overreacted (throwing everyone's glasses?), but I don't blame her for being pissed off--for God's sake, this is her mom's signature song, and hearing it discofied is pretty damn close to sacrilege. (And yeah, the "disco" reference makes me think that this happened some time ago, as the current term IIRC is "dance music" or one of the various subgenres within that category.)

Team Liza too. It might have been meant in honour but it would very obviously be a touchy situation for her. Totally understandable to react, and not surprised if she still does coke, but it read to me that it was in the 70's at least.

Missed this BI when it came out. I can totally see her doing this but it's probably not recent.

(We saw Liza's solo show many many years ago, she was fantastic. Love her.)

According to this list there've been at least 2 disco versions of the song, had no idea it's been recorded so much:

Go Crazy Liza!!

libby, that Star Wars disco song was HORRIBLE! LMAO! Especially when your high school Jazz Dance team (read: the stuck up bitches)dances to it ad nauseam (did I spell that right?)

During the last exercise class I took (earlier this year), a disco version of two songs I truly love played back to back. No lie - Oliver's Army by Elvis Costello, and Wonderful Life by Black. When we took a breather I loudly asked, "Is nothing sacred anymore?" Apparently it's an Australian company that "disco-izes" songs for exercise classes.

I don't blame Liza.

what happens in a person's life that they feel their feelings/unhappiness, make it acceptable for them to abuse others? would it ever occur to anyone reading this list to act this way? they can't be born like this, because they would never get ahead. so at some point the tide turns. any psych majors here?

Ok this is interesting, found it googling: liza disco over rainbow.

http://www.disco-disco.com/clubs/studio54.shtml

The gossip there from the workers at Studio 54 is a hoot!

Liza Minelli cornered me in the employee dressing room and told me that one time she was in a limo going to do a concert at Madison Square Garden. She was drinking some champagne, and all of a sudden a disco version of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' came on the radio. She said it made her furious and threw the glass of champagne against the window between the front and back of the limo. She then said she realized how much the public loved her mother to contemporize the song, she burst into tears and cried all the way to the concert."

In her defense, I hate that song too.

Miz said...

I don't think it's so much acceptable as understandable. Hearing that song may have caused any number of reactions and emotions, positive and negative (I love WoO but am always reminded of Judy's sad life when I hear that song, as her daughter her feelings will be stronger) also the fact she was on drugs too, I doubt that was her first line of the night, or even longer. That would probably have her react differently to a sane and sober person.

@Elizabeth, I hate it too!

I checked the photos and the closest thing to diva that day was Mariah Carey but since the blind alluded to an Oscar, couldn't be her.

Didn't Liza EGOT?

libby said...

shakey...LMAO! You are so funny! I guess it's awesome to me, because it's such a snapshot of the only happier years of my childhood...those days of disco. I totally understand your issue with it, though!

I actually love this. tbh, I probably would've done the same thing.

You go, Liza!

Me asked for a psych major to weigh in. I don't know if Miz is, but I was, and her analysis is spot-on. I'm not sure that an extreme response like this is exactly abusive. As Miz said, it's not acceptable, but it's understandable.

Tru Leigh said...

Was this recently or in her Studio 54 days?

Thanks AKM.

Not a psych major, but I've been in the less than sane part of an eval. It's taken years and a ton of hindsight to recognise the destructive nature in others that I fought with in myself.

So yeah, I don't think her behaviour may have been entirely acceptable (personal responsibility and all that) but entirely understandable.

This sounds like the Studio 54 days when everyone was doing disco. And of course, at S54, they were also doing coke on the tables.

AND Miss Liza is STILL partying hahahaha love it

God I want to be like her when I'm 70

Hmmmm...I've been wondering why someone would mix Over the Rainbow with disco.

The only conclusion I could come up with is they're trying to market exctasy to my generation because that is the ONLY way one could tolerate that ditty
