Today's Blind Items - Direct This

I think it is possible that I may have found a director who is even worse than the Oscar winning A+ list director that has been in this space frequently or even Woody Allen. The director of which I am speaking is an Oscar winner, but not for what you might think. It is shocking actually he does not have more Oscar wins.

I do hope this is in some small part due to his raping and abusing women throughout his career. Although the number of actresses he abused is in the dozens, I am going to focus on just a few of his more notorious crimes.

He raped three tweens during a casting process and gave the role to the tween he said was the one who was the best in bed. He later ordered her to sleep with the much much older foreign born co-star on the movie who would go on to have an A list career. That co-star injured her severely and production had to be stopped for a week to allow her to recover.

The director kept her around for a couple of years under the guise of getting her more roles, but the real reason was he could send her out to find other tweens and early teens to bring back to his place where he would get them drunk or slip them drugs and then rape them. He often filmed these rapes and would film the actress with the other tween and teen females.

In the movie for which he is most famous he had friends of one of his children come to the set with the child. All of the friends were probably no older than 7 or 8. He molested a dozen of them at least during the filming of the movie and filmed many of them. When he died there were hundreds of hours of footage which was some of the most extreme versions of child porn anywhere.

With all these BIs about pedo directors and pedo actors and politicians, it's kind of strange we have had one about Larry Clark yet or have we?

It's Charlie Chaplin, unfortunately. Dead. Won an oscar for best musical score for Limelight. Never for writing or director or acting. He's known for dating teens as well...

Sidney Pollack is the best guest I've seen so far.

Also, Sandybrook is right...why has Larry Clark's name been omitted all these years? He's given me the creeps since....well....forever.

We've even talk about it on our show. A lot of red flags with that guy...and if you notice he certainly isn't seen or heard from anymore.

BackOffBitch said...

cheesegrater15, it's certainly one of his most famous, but City Lights, Modern Times & The Great Dictator are certainly his more well known films.

Brayson87 said...

Come on Enty, Feldman rules, you can obviously hint/name the dead ones.

The great dictator id say his chaplins most famous. There are a few scenes with kids if I remember correctly?

@Sandy, I think Larry Clark was alluded to in a blind from a couple months ago (IIRC, it had to do with his photography). I also know that Koraine has showed up in some of the Franco/Web blinds.

Bitch, that's a good point. According to IMDB, Modern Times or The Great Dictator would make more sense with the kids. It's sickening whoever it is.

Lita Grey as the girl . She starred in the Kid.

sandybrook said...

@MKL way back in the old days on this board Larry Clark was almost a regular in BIs about pervert directors and especially the Kids movie. There may have been a BI here recently about him being a director who casts kids or nearly underaged legals to fulfill his own perversions. For real most movies this POS made seem to focus on teens and sex with them. Even if the actors aren't underage. Korine seems to be another one.

However, I am beginning to doubt my answer of Chaplin for one reason. He forced her to sleep with his foreign born co-star who would go on to have an A list career. Unless, it's the film "A Woman of Paris" and the co-star is Adolphe Menjou (and I'd say his career was more toward an A-), I don't see how this could be Chaplin. It could also be Marlon Brando on A Countess from Hong Kong, however, he would have already been considered A list since it is post-Streetcar, On the Waterfront and a slew of other films. Chaplin was usually the stars of his own films without any famous co-stars.

BackOffBitch said...

Wait, Brando was not foreign born, nor was Menjou... which kind of destroys the Chaplin guess.

Lurky McLurkster said...

Hitchcock only won one of those lifetime of work awards

BackOffBitch said...

Lurky, that guess works too. He did work with kids on occasion, like in The Man who Knew Too Much, The Trouble with Harry... and more recently, Veronica Cartwright was a tween when she did The Birds..

filmfanb said...

I like Hitchcock but I always thought he was a bit ......asexual and frigid.

Brayson87 said...

Steve Landry, that works well. In fact, Sue Lyon on Lolita was a teen... and the older co-star could have been James Mason.

While I think Chaplin is a good guess I don't think this is him. He seemed to be more into tweens like Elvis, not small children. I think this is someone a bit more recent. Have there been rumours about Sydney Pollack?

BackOffBitch said...

Could even be Ingmar Bergman... won only an honorary award. Worked with kids a fair bit like in Fanny & Alexander...

Peter Sellers was also in Lolita.
And Kubrick directed Kirk Douglas in Spartacus.

Buddytesla said...

My guess was going to be Hitchcock. The only Oscar he ever received was the Lifetime Achievement Award. Chaplin fits too though.

dlux said...

Unless I’m wrong about something. Kubrick fits...

plot said...

Kubrick only worked with a child during The Shining and Lolita but Sue Lyons was 14, not 7-8, during that filming (god she was brilliant, too.)

Wait, there was child in Barry Lyndon, too.

Still, he didn't cast a gaggle of kids in anything from which to pick his "favorites".

dlux said...

Ok damn. Everything else points to him. One Oscar for FX. 2 lil girls. Surprised he never won more...

But it does say 3 tweens in casting process. Maybe she was like 12 when that happened. I dunno? But also. The 7/8 yr olds were just his daughter bringing friends to set. Most famous movie?

Farmgirl said...

Kubrick does seem to fit. It doesn't say that the children that came to the set were actors or that they had roles in the movie. His most famous film is probably 2001, which came out in 1968 when his daughters were around 8 or 9.

Anonymous said...

Peter Sellers/Sue Lyons for the earlier incident

filmfanb said...

Kubrick
Lolita was the film the girls were cast for. I think there were a lot of people who were willing to audition
Sue Lyn as the girl who got the role
James Mason as the actor. He had a tough time with the movie given he was constantly being overshadowed by Stellers. This could have caused him to lash out at Sue Lyn
The most famous movie was 2001 and the guise of kids getting to see a set with spaceships would have been the lure

I hate to write this though....I fucking love Kubrick.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps James Mason would qualify as her co-star, and he would definitely put the "much, much" into older, although he was pretty established at that time.

filmfanb said...

Ya. To be fair, James Mason and Stellers could interchangeable as the costar.

Sara, Making It Work said...

I came here to guess Kubrick. Was going to mention the same thing as @1962rocketgoldstar, and add that at least one of his daughters had a bit part in 2001. So it would put them on set, and give them an excuse to invite their friends.
I'm not married to this answer, but I think it works. We know he's a sketchy person and abusive director already (exhibit A: Shelley Duvall) so it would not surprise me ONE BIT.

Huntley Haverstock said...

C’mon. It’s not Kubrick. He was convinced that the secret keys of power in the world were turned by pedophiles. He hated them and was disgusted by them. Kubrick definitely fits with Sellers (not James Mason) as the older co-star. His career grew from Lolita, whereas James Mason was already a big star.

Mad Hominem said...

The late Sydney Pollack makes no sense. Based on three of his movies, Three Days of the Condor, Tootsie and Out of Africa, there are no kids' roles. The rumors about Rick Moranis make sense, because he made the Honey...Kids movies. But I don't know if Pollack even made a family film, so luring kids to the set by adding them to the cast doesn't seem to be part of any discernible modus operandi.

Just because someone is dead doesn't mean we can drag them through the mud.

Ice Angel said...

First of all Rick Moranis is NOT DEAD. Second of all, Rick lost his wife to breast cancer and actually took a hiatus from acting to raise his children as a single parent and has kept them very well shielded from Hollywood fame.

Seems this is supposed to be Kubrick and Sellers. Kubrick has been mentioned in blinds here before.

Kubrick auditioned over 800 girls for the part of Lolita.

Sellers says he modeled his character after Kubrick himself, and changed his voice to match Kubrick's.

Really hard to argue that Kubrick hated pedophiles given he was so excited to make a movie about a grown man having sex with a 12yo. Yes, 12. She was 12 in the book, and Kubrick only changed it to 14 because the censors made him. And then he spent a really, really long time auditioning over 800 young girls...

Hermes Trismegistus said...

I doubt that this is Kubrick. A decent amount of his work, including Lolita, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut, either hint (The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut) at or outright show the ugliness of child abuse.

I don't think anyone has found the right person yet.

Unknown said...

Clarisse, do you like to diddle littlie kiddles? You seem to know a lot about it. You know absolutely nothing about the meaning of EWS. Excited? You have proof of this? EWS wasn't a fucking porno, in fact it was legit to expose the elite types who make sex and diddling kiddles a ritual, something Kubrick was aware of and hated. You have zero evidence to back any of this up and I'm very, very sure you're out of your gourd.

Hey, it wouldn't be the first time that someone is disgusted and turned on at the same time. Look at all the germaphobes out there, like Trump, who get off on watching others shit and pee, and quite possibly participate in it. How about all the closeted gay ministers and GOP reps who are the strongest voices against LGBT rights.

"he spent a really, really long time auditioning over 800 young girls."

Which wouldn't be unusual for Kubrick, who had some sort of OCD about everything. He obviously did well picking Sue Lyons...that is if she wasn't his victim.

Oh yeah, I could see Peter Sellers doing anyone and everyone, without age stopping him for a second.

Here's a list a famous directors that never won a Best Director Oscar: http://www.indiewire.com/2014/02/20-celebrated-filmmakers-who-never-won-a-best-directing-oscar-88655/

Most of them did win Oscars in other categories.

Anonymous said...

So I'm gonna through an off the beaten path suggestion out:

Akira Kurosawa.
Legendary director, but his only Oscars come a 1976 Foreign Film win and a 1990 Honorary Oscar. Only director nod came in 1980.

The foreign born A lister would be Toshiru Mifune. The film was Stray Dog, 1949. Only Mifune's 6th film, before he was one of the biggest Japanese stars of all time.

The girl, Keiko Awaji. 16 when Stray Dog came out, so probably 14-15 when it was made. Played a showgirl in the film.

Kurosawa's daughter, Kazuko, would have been 7 when Yojimbo, one of his most famous films came out. That was a samurai movie, so it would appeal to youth, I'd think, so that would explain set visits.

My only concerns with my guess is that I'd wager Rashomon was a better known film and that Mifune was only 29 during Stray Dog -- older but not MUCH older, at least not like several decades older

Angela said...

This is fuckin' stupid.

Kubrick hated to interact with people. He had few parts for actresses in his films (one in Paths of Glory and Dr Strangelove, two in Full Metal Jacket, maybe three or four in 2001, including the cameo by his daughter, you can easily check this on IMDb). He may have been on the Asperger's spectrum.

Then, Kubrick had a closed set policy. His assistants would have noticed something if the guy who was reclusive to the point there wouldn't be more than 10 technicians on set for a major studio production suddenly allowed a bunch of 7 year-old-kids coming to the set.

And, famously, Kubrick lived in the UK. He had American assistants dealing with most of the audition stuff. Meanwhile, Sue Lyon was working in the US, and she was even married to the guy who later wrote Blade Runner and its sequel.

Kubrick's biographies reveal that for a while he was obsessed with Julie Christie, and he desperately tried to find a reason to contact her, but he was married. That's most of the gossip about him.

John Cassavetes

Two daughters. Xan would have been 8 or 9 during the filming of Woman Under the Influence. Zoe would have been 3-4. Both his wife and his mother were on that set, as stars, so while it might have happened (Peter Falk being the older star) that seems less than likely. No young women in that cast either, that I can remember.

Arthur Penn

One daughter who would have been 5-6 while Little Big Man was filmed. I'm finding no children cast in big roles in that movie though.

Otto Preminger

One daughter born 1960. She would have been 7 when he was filming Skidoo, which looks like a really awful movie but it stars about 6 A-list guys. One young actress but she would have been 20 during filming.

That's enough for the moment.

IanPhlegming said...

Unless we're going way back and this is Charlie Chaplin, the only other great director would be Kubrick. It's one of those two or someone not yet mentioned. Nobody else fits all the clues.

I originally guessed Kubrick, then deleted it when I saw the headline and thought it was Harold Ramis--he had a daughter about 7 when he was shooting Ghostbusters--but no Oscar for anything.

Altman fits a lot of it, and lived in Malibu. But his kids were too old for M*A*S*H's shoot to fit.

My concern is that actually nearly ALL these guys were into teens and tweens, at least. There's lots of shady stuff around the borders of Kubrick, from "Lolita," to that Playgirl cover in "The Shining" to the recent Reddit theory I read about EWS and how the daughter disappears at the toy store in the last five minutes. Pretty unsettling.

Sara, Making It Work said...

Altman does not fit. I have seen most of his movies and can't think of any with children or tweens. Also, I agree that his own children seem too old for this. Plus his only Oscar is honorary. Don't know if tart makes him an "Oscar winner".

Chaplin works, but it does seem like it would be an "Old Hollywood" blind.

I'll keep looking...

Sara, Making It Work said...

Hitchcock was terrible, but this isn't him. The timeline would put "The Man Who Knew Too Much" as the movie he most famous for, which I disagree with. His daughter would've been 5 when that one was made.
Most importantly, the director in question has multiple children; Hitchcock had only one.

Yes, Woody Allen's films aren't as enjoyable anymore because the artist and all his perversions are all over them. Late to the party, as always, but just feeling cranky after reading all this.

Look: even more than the Chaplin guesses, the shots at Kubrick make no sense. At all. Not only was Sue Lyon way north of tweendom when she was cast in Lolita, he did not do films featuring lots of kids... and oh, yeah: his daughter has never expressed any animus toward her late father.

Brando as a secondary?? Again, he kinda fetishized "exotic" women. Grown women. So, WOC, accented foreign ladies--man had a Type, and it wasn't kiddies. His sexuality was a little fluid, but that struck many as being more involved with vanity/ego gratification. He was an open-minded kind of guy for his time, after all. Ask Quincey Jones ;).

[I'm biased on Brando, sure. My mom really liked him (he dated her best starving starlette girlfriend, kept their fridge stocked, paid for Gf's Mexico procedure, etc). And while he may have been a lousy spouse and parent, got to admit: when it came to placing his stardom in support of public causes, MB went all in. Not just with his AIM support, but as an open, fervent advocate for civil rights long before the March on Washington. He might've been a bad guy at times, but he was good-bad, not Evil ;-)].

plot said...

Bitca,

I don't think the Kubrick guesses have any validity either. First, Sue Lyons didn't act like some cowed abused girl in her performance of Lolita. Compared with the performances by actresses in films like Blame it on Rio or Godard's movies or even Polanski's Tess (Natassia Kinski), Sue has a lot of freedom in that role and dominates her scenes over the likes of Mason and Sellers. She certainly doesn't show any signs of being passed around the set. In order to play a character part mythical fairy, part bitchy teenage girl, Lyons had to be given a lot of freedom to play with that role, and Kubrick gave it to her. Being abused by her co-stars would have resulted in a dominated performance.

Second, during the filming of The Shining, Kubrick took great pains to make sure the actor who played Danny was not aware of the scary side of the finished product. One can see in the documentary of the filming that Kubrick told the child he was acting in a comedy story. His parents were there for filming. Kubrick was extremely aware of the ill effects the adult filming process could have on kids and did everything possible to protect Danny (who is now a math teacher in Montana or somewhere.)

Kubrick used the inner lives of his actors to produce the effects he wanted on screen. He made Shelley Duvall's life hell. He made Tom Cruise walk through a door for 100+ takes. He only allowed two actors to improvise in any of his films - Jack Nicholson and R. Lee Ermey. I don't think a director with such a need for control would allow sex to derail his visions. I don't see him using it either, as he couldn't control the results of it.

Kubrick's sets are not known for their hedonistic excess, more like grueling workshops.
