Your Turn

Did you go to your prom? Did they have a prom?

No we didn't have one.

Fuck no. Prom is just an excuse to show off how rich your parents are. Mine weren’t.

I went 2x, had a blast. But I went with a group of good friends, so it was an excuse to dress up and goof off, pretend we were grownups and dance a lot. Nobody rented a limo, nobody spent a fortune on a gown, we just had fun together.

My high school was super poor. We were all farmers. We did have a prom! I went - spent an outrageous $40 on my dress with money from my after school job. We didn't do after parties in hotels or limos. Maybe you went to a cheap place for dinner first, the the prom. Ah the 70s. (and yes the dress was horrific)

I went as a group with like 6 other couples. All of us guys rode together on the way from the restaurant to the prom, and on the way, we got the bright idea of getting coon ass drunk before meeting the girls at the school.

We stumbled in an hour late after practically bathing in Abercrombie cologne and our girls were all lined up along the lockers, arms folded, looking absolutely scandalized. So I did the only thing I could think to do, which was put my arm around my girlfriend and say, "Let's dance!"

Needless to say, the half hearted action she did give me that night was only acquired after I'd spend what she deemed a sufficient(and what I deemed excessive) amount of time begging on my hands and knees.

(UK) We didn't have proms or sweet 16 or babyshowers or Christmas eve boxes...I miss the old innocent days.

And no, my parents weren't rich, @Duh. None of us were in my town.

Never went as Prom at my HS was an all out thing and your boy Troy didn’t have a steady. No use paying a bunch of $$$ to go with a friend. I just went to college parties instead

Went my junior year and senior year. Paid for the senior dress with my own money.

Never went to a prom. I would have liked to but I am only now overcoming my social awkwardness.

@Super Comic Fun Time.

Were you just known as Super Comic back then, then?

Went to both my Junior (1983) and Senior (1984) proms. The pictures are atrocious, of course.

Senior year, my boyfriend was a Sophomore. Sophomores couldn't go to the Jr/Sr prom. So, we put a fake mustache on him, listed him under his cousin's name (from out of state), and went anyway. Come to find out later, he was banned from going to HIS Junior prom because his cover was blown the year before.

After-prom my senior year, my parents and I had a Breakfast for my friends. We had about 200 people come through from 4am to 7am, everyone got something to eat. Nothing got broken, no one drove who even had a hint of alcohol on their breaths (parents insisted on it). It was so crazy that the police helped out by blocking side streets so my friends would have a place to park and get out of later.

The local movie theater (2-screen jobbie) showed Sixteen Candles, Police Academy, and Children of the Corn from 8am to 1pm ($5 for 2 people to watch all 3, free concession stand fare, sponsored by local Elks lodge to keep kids from drinking/driving) and as the last hurrah for the seniors, the school had a senior lunch-cookout in the school parking lot after the movies let out.

Looking back, I think the lunch/cook-out was a consolation prize because a week later our Senior trip was cancelled. We ended up going to a local state park known for having caves, and where the boys went the evening before and stocked the caves closest to the covered pavilion with cases of beer on ice. The teachers *hated* my graduating class. Seems they hated us from the 7th grade on. No matter what we did. Meh. 90% of the teachers are dead now. WHO'S LAUGHING NOW!

No, I was not asked. Prom was a big deal, and yet it wasn't. You certainly wanted to go, though I could not tell you who was crowned king or queen (do not even recall voting).

Vita said...

Nope, but had fun at post prom senior year

Flashy Vic said...

@Sagan.

That's a very "magnanimous," Father Ted vibe that I'm getting from that post of yours.....

I went to three. It was the early 90s and the photos are cringeworthy.

Nope and yes.

Tempestuous Grape said...

Nope. I did go to an 80's themed fake prom a few years ago. Super fun.

Ann said...

No I didn't go and I had no interest in going. Too busy partying to waste time and money on a stupid dance.

Sagan said...

@Flashy Vic - LMFAO!

All said? I wouldn't want to change a thing (or do it again, even knowing what I know now) about my high school years. Just *so* relieved they're behind me. Like 35 years behind me this month. :D

Went prom twice. ‘07 and ‘08! Had a blast both times expect I ended up being allergic to my dress in ‘07 which made for a very uncomfortable night. Still had fun though.

never went to one.

Nah.. i was the one who had the anti-prom parties where girls escaping bad dates and drama could run to.kind of prom version of the underground railroad

Brayson87 said...

Nope, senior year I was dating a really cool college girl and I was afraid she'd think I was immature if I asked her. So we just went to a bunch of after parties instead. She told me later that she was actually hoping I would ask her. I was like damn it, I kind of wanted to go. ;)

Cuddlebutt said...

Yes, a few. My senior year a friend fucked the chauffeur. Right in front of me. After ditching her boyfriend at the dance -but she went right back to him after.

zerooptions said...

Didn't go to the prom, went to the after parties!
Much more fun there!

Cuddlebutt said...

@Justin, you are in Louisiana? Our proms were held in a bar. An open bar. I didn't drink. My dresses were nice. The first was $75 and I wore it to 2 proms. My daughter wanted to wear it but I couldn't find it. Found the huge crinoline but not the dress. *sigh* She ended up wearing a gown from the early 90's that I wore to a Mardi Gras ball in New Orleans.

Guesser said...

No,so I don't have an ugly picture of me with a guy in a pastel tux with a ruffled shirt. The "cool" kids wouldn't go during that time. The seventies. And most would be old enough to drink, since the age was 18.

Pogue Mahone said...

We had one but ugly girls like me never got asked to the Prom.

OKay said...

It's grad here in Canada. I did but kind of wish I hadn't bothered. Hubby didn't go to his, and Son is graduating now and won't be going to his. It's pretty overrated when you don't like the people you go to school with. LOL

i never went to prom because i had just endured a campaign of bullying. i was hated by my fellow students after i exposed physical abuse and borderline sex abuse

We didn't have one.

I didn’t go to the prom, I read “Notes From The Underground” instead.

Scandi Sanskrit said...

Just kidding. (That was a line from a play.)

Nope. Because proms and homecoming aren’t part of Indonesian culture.

But now some wannabe-Americanised schools have “proms” and “cheerleading squads” that just came out of nowhere other than appropriation of Hollywood. Which is kind of tacky.

It’s like those Indonesians who will westernise their accents when they speak Indonesian (with a curled R) and mix in English words into their sentences but then other than catchphrases, it turns out they speak broken English and speak English with an Indonesian accent.

If that’s part of your American culture, then good for you. I just don’t see how why Indonesian schools are doing it.

WTF with Indonesian schools doing proms and cheerleaders. So cringe.

I went to mine and his. Styx played at his in 1974.

Yep, both years. It was fun.

My school had one but I did not go.

I did not see the point then and I don't regret my decision.

I went to senior prom at my HS when I was a freshman. It was with a guy who I knew through doing volunteer work, so just platonic. Still, my two older sisters were so pissed because I was only 14 and my parents never would’ve let them go at that age. Then I went to my BF’s senior prom when I was a senior. He went to a different school than me. Had a huge fight with my mother, because she wouldn’t let me buy the dress that I wanted, even though I was paying for it. She thought it was too sophisticated (I swear, I still dream about that dress!) Poor guy, I broke up with him a few weeks later.

Surprised to read all the comments about people not having proms because they weren’t from wealthy towns. I wasn’t either, but we didn’t have limos and all the trappings. Just bought a dress and the guy rented a tuxedo and we went. When I see what people do for proms now, it’s pretty shocking. More like a wedding!

Aquagirl said...

@Troy: Sorry our boy Troy didn’t have a steady! ☹️

Scandi Sanskrit said...

OMG tell us the details about then dress your mom didn’t approve of because it was “too sophisticated”! 🥤🍿

Scandi Sanskrit said...

LMAO the fake moustache story wtf.

lintmag said...

Went to 3 proms - in the 70s things were very low key, not $$$ like now. You had to just find some long dress or make one as there weren't any "prom dress" sections. I was just friends with the guys I went with so no hot date there, but I did have a fabulous tan!

Popinjay said...

Sagan must live in western Wisconsin. All the beer, and caves. Yeah, your teachers hated all of you.

MountainMama said...

Yep Junior and Senior year we could go unless younger and had a boyfriend who was a Junior or Senior. Traditionally everyone went out for dinner or got together at someone's house and the parents fed a group, followed by the Promenade, then prom, then post prom, then the next day an outing. Since this was late 70's there were tons of Gunny Sack dresses. Tuxes were easter egg colors, mint green, robin's egg blue, etc. My guy was two years older and he hated every second of both years, his mom had to help me beg him to take me. What really got him to take me was the other offers I had. Highly over-rated the whole thing.

Nope. My sisters senior prom had REO Speedwagon playing in the gym. Nobody even cared. This was before they hit the big time. That school always hired great bands for prom. I don't think they do anymore.

I couldn't attend because my mother could not afford it, but nobody remembers it. We had a party after the classes ended and then we said our goodbyes. That little party is well remembered after 30 years!
