Dave Gahan Had Cancer Surgery

Do you remember a few weeks ago when Dave Gahan was supposed to perform a concert with Depeche Mode and was rushed to a hospital in Georgia? At the time everyone said it was just stomach problems and nothing serious. Why would we think otherwise, and so no one really followed up on it or why he was there or if he ever checked himself out. I mean this is Depeche Mode. No offense, but paps would have staked out hospitals and bribed people for lesser known worthy groups or singers. This is Dave Gahan.

Anyway, no word at all, and then the band released a statement on their website just announcing why they had to reschedule concerts and cancel others. It turns out that while Dave was in the hospital for stomach problems they discovered a malignant tumor in his bladder. What?

"While in hospital, further medical tests revealed a low-grade malignant tumour in Dave's bladder, which has since been successfully removed. At doctors' orders, Dave Gahan must take a break until June 8 to ensure that he makes a full recovery.

"Dave Gahan sincerely thanks his fans for their support, understanding and patience. Depeche Mode deeply regret any problems or inconveniences the cancellations and postponements may have caused."

Umm, he is taking off just until June 8th? Take all the time you want Dave. Can you imagine if this was someone more pap famous rather than just a talented guy part of a group that has sold millions upon millions of records? First of all we would have had hourly reports and there would have been crawlers on the bottom of the 24 hour news channels. There would be a People Magazine cover story about how he cheated death and his plans for the future. And, they would have canceled the entire tour. You have to love a guy who is going through what must have been a scary past few weeks and he is worried about his fans and apologizing to them for missing shows because he had cancer surgery. Absolutely amazing.

God, I love Depeche Mode.

This guy has had his fair share of troubles over the years and he manages to come through them all okay. I hope that continues.

He has one beautiful voice.

I hope Dave Gahan recovers soon. June 8 is only a couple of weeks of recovery.

Enty, with all of this perspective on good and bad celeb behavior, maybe you should write a book on celeb-tiquette.

Um, I asked if it was something more serious. It's back in the comments somewhere. :)

I just hope he really will fully recover. The word "malignant" always makes you fear for the worst.

sending good thoughts.

Hah, found it. (Not that I'm glad to have been right or anything.)

"I sure hope Dave Gahan is feeling better soon, and I hope this isn't a cover story for something really bad."

I should go to work for the paps.

Depeche Mode gave the best concert I have ever been to. Let's have a black celebration, to celebrate the fact that we've seen the back of another black day.

Moosh, you SHOULD go to work for the paps. Jax could join you and you could go by the name JaxMoosh. If you'd have me, I'll write for you and we'll call it JaxMoosh Kravitz. :-)

Anyway, may Dave have a full and speedy recovery.

Just goes to show that it IS possible to sell millions upon millions of records and NOT be on the cover of Star magazine every freaking week.

I hope he has a speedy recovery!

Probably one of the most famous "underground" bands of all time. STILL selling out huge venues, continuously working to release successful albums since 1981, let's not forget the number of bands that have been influenced by DM...

Oh yeah, and the only band to shut down Hollywood Blvd TWICE because of the number of fans that showed up.

I wish Dave a healthy, non-paparazzi recovery.

Mooshki, don't worry your little heart...bladder cancer is VERY treatable. The fact that it is low-grade is even better. I am sure he will do well. Probably only needs surgery. He just needs to stop smoking!!

Thanks for writing about this Ent, it shows how much you respect Dave and Depeche Mode. When I learned about how serious it was for him, I too was surprised that not even the BBC touched it. Had it been that lady gaga bitch, the news would have been all over it. But yet, Dave Gahan the singer of a band that has held steady for nearly 25 years and beloved my millions around the world, the media can't be bothered. WTF?

Get well Dave.

"He just needs to stop smoking!!"

Ugh. I have a couple of friends who smoke, and I just wish I could lock them away for a month to break their habit. I know there are lots of unhealthy things we all do, but cigs are particularly nasty. Although, I think in future years the sugar subsidies will come to be seen as just as evil as the tobacco industry. How is it that a half-gallon of juice costs 3 times as much as a 2-liter of soda? And a Hershey bar is cheaper than a piece of fruit? I'm going to start a new movement: "Tax the Twinkies!!!" :)
