Don Lemon Announces He Is Gay

Everyone knew that someone "famous" was going to come out this week, but for the second time in a row for one of these announcements, I had to ask myself who exactly the person is. With the build up these last two coming outs have brought, you would think you were going to get a big star and not someone you barely know. Now, that is not to be confused with the fact that I am happy Don Lemon has decided to come out to the world. I am very grateful and I think if he helps just one person who is struggling with their identity than it is all good. Don announces his coming out in a press release promoting his new book. In case you have no idea who Don is, he is an anchor on CNN.

1. Good for him

2. But why does it have to coincide with a book release?

Who cares?

Who didn't know this? Or could have guessed? Furthermore, it's sad that you do not know who Don Lemon is. He's all over cnn.

He looks like that guy from the Fresh Beat Band!

MISCH said...

Shocking ! Not.

SusanB said...

I watch him on CNN sometimes - seems like a nice guy. I can't believe he's 45 though, I thought he was in his early thirties!

Seachica said...

Did anyone guess him for the blind? Sadly, I don't know him. But I get very little of my news from TV these days.

Sevenmack said...

Actually, Don Lemon is very well-known to news junkies and most folks watching cable news. It would be difficult even for folks who don't watch the news not to know him. But, again, what can be expected when you spend more time on Teen Mom crap.

Mango said...

I think his self-outing coincided with the vague "Someone famous is going to come out this week" rumor.

ms snarky said...

I have absolutely no idea who he is.

this is what I get for giving up cable. : )

RocketQueen said...

Never heard of him. Then again, CNN is not really my preferred network for actual news.

califblondy said...

And I was hoping he and Fredricka had a thing going on. They are always so cute together.

I have never heard of him either, and I watch CNN every day, but I guess not during the time he's on air.

Anyway, good for him. In other coming out news, the President and CEO of the Phoenix Suns, Rick Welts, came out today (Well, I guess Sunda, but I heard it this morning) as well. I'm glad there are some people brave enough to do this in high(er) profile positions, and these two - in the news and sports arenas - maybe will help others be more comfortable with who they are.

BigMama said...

good for him - but I am sure Michael K must be beside himself that it wasn't his "boo"

pegd said...

I watch cable news and had never heard of him either. Like RocketQueen, CNN is not my preferred network.

I apparently have a completely different interpretation of "famous" than the rest of the world.
Anderson Cooper? Famous.
Don Lemon? Not so.
However, cudos to Mr Lemon for having the courage to come out prior to his book release - hopefully it will help someone other than his bottom line.

He's on CNN early in the morning. I watch it sometimes to see what mainstream America thinks, and for the crazy documentaries they show. Plus, my most favourite journalist, Christian Amanpour is always on.

JJ said...

Agree with the Fresh Beat Band comment.

I'm not a CNN watcher, but I've heard of this guy. It's not a complete surprise.

I like the idea that someone decides to come out simply because there's a rumor that a 'big name' is going to. Good PR work!

ForSure said...

I thought it was going to be Mary Carillo the female sportscaster.

Obviously he's coming out ahead of the book release because the book discusses the issue. That's probably the only reason there is any interest in the book at all. While he is a likable guy, I've never been terribly impressed with his reporting. He's one of the anchors that seems to be more concerned with summing up twitter and facebook comments.

Christiane Amanpour has moved over to ABC now, I don't think she is allowed to file reports for CNN anymore.

@FS

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

I thought she had a show on CNN. I haven't watched it in at least a year or so.

I don't know who this is, but I am more shocked by the fact that he's 45!

Seachica said...

@sevenmack - nice way to criticize all of us on here. Just because you know him doesn't mean everyone does or even should. The news world does not revolve around CNN reporting anymore (at least not domestic, which has really gone in the toilet. CNN-I is still high quality).

Good for him for coming out.

ForSure said...

She did have a show on CNN on Sunday mornings, but she's been with ABC for almost a year I think.

Just posted at Dlisted I was not at all shocked at the gay revelation - gaydar went off when he rturned to CNN a few weeks back - but needed assistance off the floor at the shocking "Closeted Oldie" revelation! 45!?!?!? I am still floored! Made him for about 35 tops! I want your beauty secrets, Don!

But on a serious note, I agree with Don and hope more famous folk will come out - not so much Anderson .. I mean he is pretty much out already if you pay attention - but others. I would love it if one day there would exist this knowledge that being gay is normal and it would no longer be a big deal, ya know? Live and let live, let's just all be happy .. Life is already WAAAY too messed up to have crap like who someone loves add to the drama!

Missy said...

He was molested so I'm not surprised. Some homosexuals are born, others are made.

libby said...

Whoa, Missy. Inappropriate.

ForSure said...

Thank you Libby, I'm still trying to wrap my head around that comment. I didn't know being raped/molested made you gay.

RocketQueen said...

Sad that some people actually still think the way Missy does.

Melanie said...

Pathetic is more like it Rocket Queen. ITA with Libby, totally inappropriate. Go somewhere else with your uneducated opinions.

Sevenmack said...

@valerie: I'm not criticizing anyone here for reading and following gossip. Otherwise I wouldn't be here (I'm as much into celebrity gossip as I am into discussions about monetary policy). Actually, I was criticizing Enty for lacking a wide range of knowledge. Given he's a lawyer and also a follower of all things media, he would know who Don Lemon is.

But if we are going to go there, the thing is that one should have a wider range of reading and understanding of the world than what happens on Teen Mom. There's a wide range of knowledge you should know to be a full person in the world. And one of those things should be to know who actually anchors your news channels, since they, along with their producers, help shape what we actually know.

Apologies if you or anyone else took offense.

Sevenmack said...

As for Missy: Really? It isn't even worth a response.

Missy said...

Liberals are so naive.

Missy said...

Adolescent boys, particularly those victimized by
males, were up to 7 times more likely to identify
themselves as homosexual or bisexual than peers who
had not been abused

luckylass said...

Missy: Correlation does not equal causation.

ForSure said...

Really Missy? Do you have a link for that?

I studied this issue for a psychology research paper, I found no CREDIBLE link between molestation and homosexuality, in either boys or girls. Here's what I did find, victims of molestation were no more likely to be straight or homosexual than a random sampling of the general population.

If your theory was true, than every man who ever came out of a 4 year prison sentence would be gay. Also, if adolescent boys are abused by a woman, then why would that make them gay? If male to male abuse makes them gay, then wouldn't female to male abuse make them heterosexual, or even SUPERHETEROSEXUAL? This has to come from some literature from one of those 'the church can heal your gayness' retreats.

Char said...

@luckylass - exactly.

I have no idea who he is either. However, I live in Australia. Now if it was a newscaster from ABC News (that's AUSTRALIAN broadcasting channel, not the ABC in the US associated with Disney) I would know who it was.

But good for him. Even if it is for a book, it's still better to live openly and honestly.

Henriette said...

Never guessed him, because I do not watch cable news-no cable in my house. I guessed Anderson Cooper for that blind.

Melanie said...

And where did you get that horseshit "data" from Missy? One of those "church can heal your gayness" camps like FS suggested? Before I went back to school to be a veterinarian, I was a licensed mental health counselor specializing in sex therapy. I worked exclusively with adolescent sex offenders (and occasionally adult sex offenders). In all the time I worked with them, while all of them had been molested, not a single one identified themselves as homosexual or bisexual. Also, in all the studies I did to become a sex therapist, not once did I see your so-called "fact." One might think something like that would come up during training, if it were true. You are completely ignorant, uneducated, and offensive. Take your comments elsewhere, where there might be people stupid enough to believe your drivel.

PotPourri said...

I quit watching CNN. When I want credible news, I go to Fox, and sometimes, USATODAY

Sunnyhorse said...

Missy, your statement is so retrograde (and unsupported by a reputable citation, I see), it's unbelievable. Wish we could ship people like you back to the Dark Ages where you belong.

RocketQueen said...

As I recall, Missy once claimed that if a man received a blowjob, he was automatically gay. When asked to provide evidence to support it, she provided a link to an article that specifically said that was not necessarily true. Bizarre.

surfer said...

Two things.

First off, Don Lemon was on Joy Behar last night. Joy brought up the molestation, and he made it VERY CLEAR that he knew he was gay before that happened. So there ya go, Missy.

Second, for those who don't know, Don Lemon anchors CNN Saturday evenings.

J said...

Kudos to Don...I enjoy him as an anchor...I'm sure in the tea-bag era this took great courage

And just #DEAD @ the poster referring to FAUX news for accurate reporting. Did they ever clear up whether it was Osama or Obama who was killed?

I must say, I used to really enjoy this blog but the posters here are some of the haughtiest, all-knowing & condescending bastards around. Rarely do I read the comments anymore because alas, when I do its the f*ckery above.

God-forbid your view doesn't fall in line with the rest of the pack. I have clear images in my head of what some of you miserable fuques life is like.

Please don't hamper yourself with a response, Save your spell-bounding & witty "tell-off" & suggestions that I go elsewhere. I shall continue to bypass the comments now including the blinds.

My apologies Enty. This is a long time coming and I had to get it off my chest.

Char said...

J - no one forces you to read the comments. They are here for us to use, and we're entitled to our opinions. And I would hope that ANYWHERE that someone posted that nonsense about molestation turning someone gay, people would jump down their throats! That is certainly not limited to this forum.

BTW I actually have two friends in my life (completely seperate from one another, one is in Canada where I'm from and one is in Australia where I live, they've never met) who were unfortunately molested as childred. They are both straight. I also have gay friends, and none of them were molested.

Char said...

*children, not childred... typing too fast!
