Indian Town Overrun By Deadly Spiders

There is a town in India called Sadiya and the people in that town are all ready to leave and make a run for it. The reason? Swarms of spiders have invaded the town and so far two people have died and countless others have been hospitalized. No one knows what the breed of the spider is but officials say it is not native to the town. So, one day everything is fine in the town and no one has ever seen this spider and the next day there are swarms of them? They must have come from somewhere. The spiders actually look for something to bite and are aggressive even to humans. How aggressive? If you pass one of them it will jump on you and latch on and bite. More reason for me to keep myself locked up in the house. Scientists there think it might be the Funnel Web spider which is a very scary spider. I don't know how they don't know. If there are swarms, can't someone catch one? (Thanks Callie)

Okay, this had better be a joke. This can't really be happening. I'm not going to google it, because it's NOT REAL NOT REAL NOT REAL NOT REAL

Holy shit, India just replaced Australia as Scariest Fucking Place on Earth.

I read that the two fatalities went to a witch doctor instead of the hospital - who cut open their bites with a razor and burned the blood. I think this may be a case of hysteria in a small rural village.

Holy s@$&, they've finally made their first move in their plot to take over the world! I DON'T WANT TO LIVE ANYMORE!!

I thought it said INDIANA, not India. That's far enough away that I can relax a little. Helps if you read, mik. Jeesh.

I would like to welcome our new spider Overlords and also, only as a courtesy, book them a flight to Paris. You know, just to sightsee, have some pastries and oh...maybe have a chat with a certain Canadian Crazy Person. Salve!!

...and this is why I don't mind having my luggage searched thoroughly when I travel to different countries.
Not native to the place, those poor folks. That means there is nothing already in place to combat the insects.
Hopefully now that it's on their radar they can do a massive pesticide sort of thing. Nothing but shame on the idiot who brought them there. Even if they didn't mean to, people have died.

Hey it could be worse. He could have posted pics of Blohan and Kim Kuntrashian tagteaming Chris Hemsworth.

They need to find its natural predator to kill the spiders. Haha, just thought, instead of charlottes web, it wld be Chucky's Web! Lol

Well said!

Read on CNN last night - they now doubt both deaths. One appears to have been a snake bite and the other didn't seem to have been bitten by a spider.
Sensational journalism.

uberbaldy said...

Assuming this is true, Is there a flood nearby the village? Could be a similar to what happened in Australia during their floods. The spiders sense danger and move away from there home, or in Australia's case move up. Also could explain them being aggressive. Sudden flood come along would probably make any animal antsy. I had just been thinking I'd like to visit India sometime soon too. Ugh. I'll wait.

Spiders in places like Australia and Asia will fuck your shit up. My SIL lives in Australia near Melbourne, and they tell me about the stuff they have over there and it's horrifying. They have this HARMLESS spider called the Huntsman - it's like our Daddy Long Legs except x50 and hairy and UGH. It will crawl on your face in your sleep and eat the crust out of your eyes!

Seachica said...

Now I'm extra freaked out about the spider in my kitchen that I killed this morning. Thanks, enty.

ablake said...

AHHHHHH Amber

Congratulations, you just officially creeped out someone who is rarely creeped out.
Waking up to a huge daddy long legs eating the crust out of my eyes? WTF?

cheesegrater15 said...

Amber, I'm so sorry for your SIL. I read about Australia on Cracked and holy mother of pearl, why do people live there voluntarily?!

You guys are making me giggle! Spiders do not bother me at all. Now a snake on the other hand...........I will freak the fuck right on out!

mynerva said...

@Amber... In the nicest possible way, I hate you now.

I'm in the waiting room at the opticians and I made this really loud "GAAARGH" noise when I read about the eye crust. Everyone's looking at me like I'm a freak now.

BigMama said...

I haven't laughed this hard in weeks. Sorry folks but thanks! @Amber I feel certain there are all kinds of voodoo dolls with pins in them bearing signs that say "Amber" right now. (I'm looking for one to buy on Ebay mayself). Holy shit! I'm mostly cool with the spider thing. After those giant furry bitches in Florida, they don't bother me anymore. Now Aligators? Whole other story

Amber said...

LOL. I'M SORRY! Think about puppy dogs, rainbows and candy canes!

Char said...

Wow how did this become bash Australia thread? I lived there for 4 years and never once saw a poisonous spider. I did see 2 Huntsmen - which are scary looking because they're so big, (and look nothing like daddy long legs btw, but they have those too) but they are harmless. I only saw 1 poisonous snake and it was in a nature reserve where it was supposed to be. Australia is not some wild untamed place to be scared of, Melbourne is a city of 4 million people and Sydney is 6 million. They are huge metropolitan cities, with no more danger from spiders and snakes than NYC.

Obviously if you go traipsing around the outback, the risk goes up a little but no more so than the wilderness of the US. In fact, Aussies think of Canada and the US as being more dangerous because we have bears and cougars. And based on the number of encounters with humans every year, they are probably right.

CantHaveMyPurse said...

'I say we take off and nuke the place...its the only way to be sure."

Char - I didn't mean they LOOK like daddy longlegs. I just meant they're common & harmless like a DLL. :)

I can't wait to share Amber's story with my sister-in-law. Muahahaha

Nichole Fisher said...

@EmEyeKay - I thought the same thing, I thought the post said Indiana. I feel a little better about it being further away from here. But not much.

Comma Chaser said...

Yeah, I've seen pictures of the Huntsman. Be glad it's a pic of this little guy, and not one of those. They are Alien facehugger big.

Arachnophobia, indeed. Although this one appears to be playing pretty decent zone defense, anticipating a pull-up jumper from the Kobe Bryant of spiders.

SusanB said...

@EmEmKaye - your comment made me laugh out loud - can you imagine the hysteria if they were in Indiana? People storming grocery stores, Home Depots, etc, looking for bug spray....Cable news channels on 24 hour alert.....people freaking out in the street....mass exodus from Indianapolis....

Not making fun of those poor people in India. All it takes is 1 pregnant spider to get in the luggage compartment of a trans-oceanic airplane.....

ablake said...

Harmless or not, on my face licking my eyes..you're going to be shot. Or squished, in the case of the mutant daddy long legs

Unless your name is Adrian Paul.

Ms Cool said...

Holy mother of Fuck. First the story, then the picture and now Amber's story. This is horrifying.

EmEyeKay said...

@SusanB, NOW I'm laughing about the visual of The Indy Mass Exodus... much less freaked out about the spider, so THANK YOU.

Ugh..triple ugh! I hate the picture showing the fangs and Amber's story..oh wow..something to visualize (not).

I hate finding something crawling on me...just hate it!

I'm not generally afraid of spiders but agressive swarms are another story. And I was in Oz and never saw any cool spiders but I did see some other cool bugs. It was totally awesome for me. BUT...if that huntsman was on my face I would totally freak. Oh the worst part would be to wake up and have it on your partners face.."Uhm , honey, now don't freak out..."

sounds like the plot of a Stephen King novel. Blech. I am not askeered of most bugs but these guys sound skeery.

Goddamn it now I keep feeling something crawling on me. Like the Kardashian-Free February, can we get a Sans-Spiders Summer???? TAKE THE PICTURE DOWN NOW.

Also, add me to the reading comprehension-challenged. I also read "Indiana" and my Wisconsinite eyes got real big. O_O

Appearently the spiders have been identified as a type of highly aggressive Tarantula and they aren't that venomous. Here's an article from yesterday. It's mostly a re-hash of an older article but the last few paragraphs have some updated information.

I should also add that there is a photo of the spider's in the article. It's not pretty.

i just googled the huntsman spider and it said that it can also be found in the warm southern parts of the US

zeldafitzgerald said...

Huntsmen are friendly, lovely creatures who will eat all the mozzies and other bugs that are twice as horrible and annoying.

is this a good time to tell you about the python that lives under my house and eats all the rodents? or what about the goanna at the bottom of the garden? or the blue tongue n the garden who eats all the snails and bananas.

:) i've got more. there are WAY more scarier spiders than huntsmen...

Henriette said...

The huntsman seems to be a social spider. The males leave very nicely with the females, which is unusual for spiders.

I always thought spiders were cool.

Cindy said...

@vickie -- did you see where the a variety of the huntsman that lives in Laos can be 12" across -- imagine waking up to that SOB on your face, lol. BUT -- the huntsman DO tend to eat roaches, so I'm ok with them :D

feraltart said...

@Char, I am Austalian. How did you only see 2 Huntsman? Those mother f**kers stalk me! One once hid behind my front screen door. I saw the legs poking from the top, rang the doorbell and screamed spider as my husband opened the solid door. I hate spiders.

astrogirl said...

Huntsmen are fine. The Sydney funnel web freaks me out. We are lucky here at Bondi there aren't any but my brothers friend had to have anti venom two summers ago when he was bitten by one that was laying at the bottom of the pool. He lives at Avalon and he said his backyard is full of them and they come out at night in summer.

MadLyb said...

As someone who actually likes spiders (they eat smaller, nastier pests who in the long run, do humans much more harm), I'm giving this story a big side-eye.

Here's an impression of me in India: *dies* The end.

Seriously, a spider a lot like this was found in somewhere like Bemidji Minnesota last year, came on fruit bought at Wal-Mart/Sam's Club (they think). The spider was not just meandering, but making a straight line for a woman's child (or grandchild) so the woman bravely stood in front of it, a few feet away, planning to stomp it. It arched its back, like in this photo, and JUMPED onto her from several feet back, and bit her. Immediately she began to feel the effects of the poison but managed to call 911 and get an ambulance out there. She had to be hospitalized. I've lost some of the details in memory because reading the article was like reading the script of my VERY WORST NIGHTMARE!

*dies again*

I read this story this morning and tonight, I go to feed my dog. I think I see a huge spider next to her bowl and I think I see a red hour glass. Got my flashlight and sure as shit, it's a friggin' black widow. I ran around my house looking for my scorpion killing powder. Now I have a dead black widow, next to my dog's bowl. I hate life sometimes.
